Garp should be proud of Luffy because he is doing a better job at being a marine then most marine's. Just how many people have the Strawhats saved? Alabaster, Skypeia, Water 7, Thriller Bark, Fishman Island, Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, Zou. Most of which were defeating Pirates, and Corrupt Government elements. I would say Luffy's sense of Justice is passed down from Garp, because we always had Garp talking to the 3 brothers at the camp fire giving life lessons. Luffy is not a Pirate he is an Adventurer who has his childhood view of what a Pirate's life should be. Shanks seamed to share only the virtuous aspects of the Pirates life, being free to do what you want but not to steal or kill. Garp really knocked the sense of right into Luffy, so that is why Garp is just laughing his head off to sengoku.

Prince Stromstrider Its more then that. Its not just about duty vs love. Garp has been with the marines since he was a teenager. All his friends, all his disciples, all his mentors, they are all marines. Ao'kiji and Coby are Garp legacy to the World far more then Ace and Luffy who never followed his path. Basically the Marines are Garp's family just as much as Ace and Luffy are. Its not about choosing between duty and love, a better comparison would be like choosing between your paternal family and your maternal family when they suddenly go to war with each others. Garp coudn't hurt Sengoku, his brother in arm for over 50 years, anymore then he could hurt Luffy when he was running up to the scaffold.

Maybe if Garp was in his prime, it wouldn't be a question. It might be a bit harder at the present time because Sakazuki is 55 while Garp is 78 (both post-timeskip). Age does have a factor in physical performance--to name a few, weaker muscles and slower reaction time (even .001 seconds off could be the difference). Plus, add to the fact that Sakazuki wields the powers of the Magu-Magu no Mi. The current Fleet Admiral fought Kuzan, a peer in rank and likely as equally skilled with Haki, for the position and won. Garp is a human without any Devil Fruit abilities, using only his powerful Busoshoku/Armament Haki, which Sakazuki also possesses. We are unsure if he also has Haoshoku/Conqueror's Haki. One thing is for sure, if Sakazuki had killed Luffy at Marineford, Garp would make the island a ghost town, painted red with the blood of thousands of Marines and pirates.

I will vomit on you I don't know if Oda did either, but I'm still pretty sure Garp could've killed Akainu if he wasn't held down. Garp and Roger were known to almost kill each other every time they met. Whitebeard is as dangerous as Roger in his prime. But in the Marineford war, Whitebeard was already dying from sickness, and he had so many wounds inflicted on him, yet he still nearly killed Akainu. Garp was stronger than Whitebeard during the war because for one, he didn't have any major injuries, and two, he wasn't dying from sickness. I'm pretty damn sure Garp would've killed Akainu.

Blackbeard only messed up whitebeard in the Anime. In the manga he tried to step to whiteboard and pretty much got owned instantly and then had his crew attack as whitebeard died. Manga was better cause it showed he was really never on white beards level.

Let us, make somethings clear here: 1- Gol D Roger, is arguably the strongest character in the lore of One Piece, period. 2- Back in the day in the world of pirates there was ONLY Roger & Whitebeard, then everybody else. No Yonko, no Shichibukai, no Supernova. Only the Pirate King and his Rival. People like Big Mom and Kaido might have been around, but their names were never in the same league as Roger or Whitebeard. 3- Monkey D Garp, was the only Marine in history to go toe to toe with either of those two monsters, as he is the strongest marine to have ever lived. 4- Controversy regarding Golden Lion Shiki: Yes in the canon history, he waged war on Roger. Yes in the canon history, he was the first person to escape Impel down. Yes in the canon history, he had a three way fight vs Garp & Sengku which destroyed half of Marineford. The character of Shiki is canon without a doubt. BUT, only in history. His defeat in Strong World by the hands of Luffy may be Non-canon for it is a mere movie, but the very notion that Oda had decided to stoop the status and sacrifice such a seemingly Top Tier character of the old generation in a non canon film, means that said Author no longer has any use of this character. You'd best erase the Golden Lion's Shiki from your minds, for the possibility of this character to resurface or have an impact on present/future timeline is 0%. 5- Zephyr is the same as Shiki.

My thoughts exactly. Maybe this is one of the reasons, if not the sole cause, why the World Government is desperately trying to stop people from discovering the truth behind the Void Century. Given that all of the World Nobles that we've met so far are power-hungry bastards, it might be possible that they destroyed the image of the D carriers in the past and convinced the people that they are the true nobles of the world. The carriers of the will of D might've been the people living in the Great Kingdom because the kingdom's defeat seemed to allow the Ancient Alliance to become the World Government. The WG even ordered the Marines to kill Professor Clover because he was about to say the name of the kingdom.

Finally!! A satisfying and overall instightfull video concerning Garp! And I think the first really interesting Sengoku video I've seen, especially considering his DF. Can't believe you just now noticed, what I'd call the Garp-Roger & Smoker-Alabasta government coverup connection though.Smoker seems cool/likeable enough as a character to be the new Garp, he's a bit too weak for that, or what do you think? I'd say the "acting Fleet Admiral Sengoku" was closer to Akainu than Aokji when talking about "his justice", Seems his position as fleet admiral influnced that a lot as well. Like you said, he met up with Law and I think even mentioned, that if he was still on active duty he'd have him arested, His personal views seem to be a bit more relaxed, but his sense of duty was more important to him. Although it's hard to say how much of that was for rosinantes sake... I guess we will see what happens, but I think going forward we will see a more relaxed Sengoku and more Garpish traits of his will be expressed.

If you pause at 20:25 , you will notice the one problem most of Oda's characters suffer from, which is *the chronic tendency to skip leg day*. Seriously, the disproportion is strong in this one. Also, I really agree with you regarding the filler arcs. They could reference some of the cover page stories from the manga for these, and it would be so awesome. I feel like some of it, because it's canon, can't be animated, sadly. Otherwise, another great video from you, Matt!

When you start to talk about it, I think it's not Shanks a pirate made Luffy to become a pirate, but Garps lack of true, emotional bonding with him made captain of Strawhats to be a pirate. Shanks was just a first genuine male person who made a kind and honest bond with Luffy.

maybe Gol D Roger and Garp have a relationship similar to Luffy and smoker. maybe, even though Gol D Roger was a bad guy, maybe he did good things like Luffy does. Luffy has done a lot of bad things indirectly in his travels. Just think about the people he set free from impel down alone. So it's possible Garp, who had many run ins with Roger, saw the good things he did too and let him go, like smoker, and later on the credit for the "capture" of Roger was given to Garp like you said because of his multiple run ins with him. This would explain why he doesn't brag about the title "hero" because it's not something he prides himself on, but instead feels like it was the least he could do for Roger to save his pride as pirate king

So, if you (the fandom) actually go back to the episode where Luffy punched Garp back in Marineford. As Tekking said in the video... Luffy closed his eyes and kinda just went for it, so what if Luffy didn't realize that Garp ACTUALLY let Luffy punch him? I honestly think that when Garp and Luffy meet each other again now that we're post time skip, Luffy will probably end up blaming Garp for Ace's death and how he didn't help Luffy save Ace, thus we'll see Luffy have some sort of hatred or anger pointed towards Garp. Cause let's be real, if Garp helped Luffy. Ace would definitely be alive. Does anyone else have thoughts on this or am I alone with this thought?

I just love listening to you talk about One Piece. Please do some of the movie characters and the characters from the anime specials like Z (Zephyr), Shiki the Golden Lion, Gild Tesoro, but also Burndi World, Vice Admiral Komei, and also Vice Admiral Johnathan (from the G8 arc, he's friends with AkaInu, how crazy is that? I swear he has observation Haki.) My favorite "filler character" is Red the Aloof, from Unlimited World Red.

There's one interaction between Sengoku and Garp that is not a comic relief and kinda suggest how badass Garp actually is. After Akainu fisted Ace, you could see Sengoku worrying about Garp going wild, and Garp himself, mustering whatever loyalty he had left asked Sengoku to not let him do it. Sengoku's almost reflect to look for Garp when Ace died, and to warn him not to intervene really does paint how strong, at least from the Buddah's POV, Garp actually is. Judging by that interaction it's easy to imagine this old man Garp fucking up Akainu in his prime. We will never know how strong Garp is, or how strong he was at his prime, but having Sengoku, the one that knows him the best, worried that he could fuck up Akainu is really frightenning. It also shows off badassery the fact that he would actually have been an admiral (had he not said 'no') without having a devil fruit power, which means that his fist and his bloody haki are at least on par with Aokiji, Akainu, Kizaru and Fujitora's abilities.

In general I do consider it rather general knowledge, in terms that even if you didn't read the book, you probably know the main characters names from pop culture references - Don Quixote, Sancho Pansa, Dulcinea and Rosinante. First time I ever heard of the character was in a Hanna-Barbera Cartoon "Don Coyote". I don't know, maybe it's just more popular in Europe ^^ On the side note, Don Quixote himself directrly inspired 2 characters in OP - Donquixote Homing as the nobleman with a delusional dream and Gan Fall as the old lanky knight on an ugly horse. Might be interesting trivia.

@tekking101 the marines "hero garp" was given to Garp a long time before Gol D Roger turned himself in. It was from when Garp took down ROCKS crew that had Whitebeard Big Mom and Kaido while they were young and a legendary pirate that Oda spoke about was their captain.A lot speculate Shank's father casue of their discussion in his ship prior to Marine Ford.

I honestly think that if Luffy became a marine he'd have a similar story to Saul. He'd get to a respectable rank, have his own crew, and learn how the marines REALLY operate. Once he was given an order to carry out some fucked up mission for the sake of "justice" Luffy would probably end up saying fuck you to the marine higher ups and go rogue like Vice Admiral Saul did. Luffy has too much of a sense of honor to kill without reason and in the same way he would never let innocent people get killed and just let it happen.

You know somebody might've thought of this before, but what if Garp and Gol D Roger were brothers? But not full brothers, only half-brothers? I'm thinking that maybe they have the same mother but different fathers. That would explain the resemblance between the two, and why they have different names. It would also explain why Roger trusted Garp to keep Ace a secret. I don't know I could just be grasping at straws for all I know.
