The Mario Game That RUINED The Series- Was New Super Mario Bros Actually BAD?

The Mario series has some of the best games ever made. Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Mario & Luigi games, Mario Party, and even Paper Mario remain some of my favorite games of all time. The first Mario game I ever played was New Super Mario Bros on the Nintendo DS. It's a game I have many memories playing and enjoyed. But the game has quite the reputation due to it apparently leading to a lot of the WORST Mario games of all time such as Paper Mario Sticker Star, Mario Party 10, and the overall era of blandness present in the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U era. (Not so much present now, most of the recent Mario games have been excellent) But did that mean New Super Mario Bros itself was bad?

*@Bob Bovine* That's true there. *_However,_* it really needs an HD/4K remaster for the modern era of video gaming! Also, the requirements for unlocking World 4 and World 7 need to be changed there: I find it much, *_much_* too difficult to beat the World 3 and World 6 bosses (if I remember correctly here) as Mini Mario/Mini Luigi; and I'm a 2D Super Mario Bros. video game series veteran since the early 1990's!!

Fun fact: in the E3 2004 demo goombas and koopas were actually full 3D models, this was dropped in the E3 2005 demo. This was likely done because the Nintendo DS had a limit of about 2000 max polygons it can render at one time, and since goombas and koopas are really common enemies they didn't want to risk reaching the limit

I just absolutely hate how the Blue Shell can’t be found in levels normally so I’m afraid to even dash with it and lose it and it’s a shame since I absolutely love it too….

I was also sad to see the Battle Mode multiplayer not return in future entries, however someone ported the multiplayer mode to PC with controller support, online play, and custom levels! It's called "New Super Mario Bros. - Mario Vs Luigi" if you ever wanted to cover it on your channel

I tend to see NSMB in a positive light, rather than a negative one. By all means, it's a neat little game. It's very charming and decently ambitious to say the least. Does it have the most exceptional level design? No. Is it especially creative in its themes? No. One can argue that it was the diving point into a more bland, excusable era of Mario, but at the same time, it was directly responsible for inspiring NSMBWii & NewerSMBWii, games that took 2D Mario to greater heights than was thought possible. Because of NSMB, there was a fresh breath of life into classic Mario, and for a little while, horizons seemed brighter than ever. Did that turn out to be true? Not so much, but you can't exactly blame this game for the failures of its successors. It could've been a better launching point, but at least we got to launch in the first place. Most series never get a second chance at redemption. It was thanks to this game that we did.

Small little fact not many would know about, both Mega and Mini Mushrooms first appeared in Mario Party 4 with a drastically different design compared to the modern entries. In Mario Party 4 both Mini and Mega Mushrooms have different effects seen in later entries minus the growing/shrinking. Mini Mushrooms shrink the user and allow access to special minigames while forcing the to hit a Sluggish Dice Block which moves 1 to 5 spaces. Mega Mushrooms make the user bigger, allows them to take 10 Coins from anyone they crush while passing by and skips most board events minus the Bowser events on his board while allowing them to hit two Dice Blocks that allows them to move 2 to 20 spaces. Both Mushrooms have rare "Super" variations that allows an extra block to be hit, meaning Super Mini Mushrooms can act like a slower version of the standard Dice Block while Super Mega Mushrooms allow 3 to 30 spaces to be traveled in a single turn. In Mario Party 4 Mini Mushrooms are Pink and have a pacifier in their nonexistent mouths while Mega Mushrooms are a lighter shade of green (turquoise to be more precise) compared to 1-UP Mushrooms. The "Super" variations of the Mini and Mega Mushrooms are translucent and can't be obtained from Mushroom Spaces or forced via the Mini-Mega Hammer. Mini Mushrooms also appeared in Mario Pinball Land with the same design seen in Mario Party 4, allowing access to rooms normally inaccessible to Mario in his regular size. Mega Mushrooms appear only in name as the Super Mushroom design is used instead, but the effects are similar to what's seen in New Super Mario Bros.

The way NSMB affected Nintendo is similar to the way Shrek affected animated films. They were praised critically and were financially successful, but some people misunderstood why it was successful and made some pretty bad choices(Watch Schaffrillas' Shrek 1 video to understand more). With that said, NSMB is my first ever video game and it's still really good.

Especially considering this game was the game I grew up with and how i got into gaming to begin with, NSMBDS (and NSMBWii as well) aren't really responsible for the reputation the series got. It's pretty much only from 2, U (not really new super luigi u but that's different) and the deluxe port. This isn't really an unpopular opinion though. I feel like the unpopular opinion I DO have is that the lack of flying power-ups being a good thing. I know other mario games like SMW had the cape, and that thing is considered hard to use. But when you could use, it basically broke the game because you could just fly over most of the levels, and that kind of thing is still true to a lesser extent for the other games with flight-related power-up (besides NSMBWii but that's because the propeller suit is easily the tamest in that regard).

The mini mushroom would've been justified if you could air jump with it. When done this way, the mini mushroom becomes the Mario equivalent of a glass cannon build. You are insanely powerful and are able to blaze through everything but one mistake results in instant death. This could also open up potential for bonus room ideas where you need to hold on to your air jump instead of using it immediately.

@@Demeech Don't remember the exact video, but I think it was the series Trash or Treasure videos. During much of 2022, the majority of your videos were about strong rants against unfinished games (especially Nintendo Switch Sports and Mario Strikers Battle League) and other Nintendo controversies. And to clarify, it's not a matter of disagreement, as I actually agree that those games were very underwhelming (and so were the latest Pokémon versions). Rather, my problem is that they dominated the channel's incoming content for so long, and it became a very stressful offering for me. It's like watching a show that starts like a fun romantic comedy and then shifts into a sociopolitical commentary full of hot takes and cancel culture (there's even a certain webcomic that I blacklisted for this exact reason). Seeing a video that praises ther strengths of a classic like New SMB felt like a breath of fresh air. =)

A fitting finale to the saga, my friend! I loved hearing your thoughts and experiences with the game, as well as getting to hear your friends talk about their time with the game and series. It was quite touching to say the least having them cameo in your video. A fitting end to the NSMB series! Congrats on reaching 50K, you deserve it, pal! :) I got introduced to Mario with Super Mario 64, but New Super Mario Bros. was my introduction to 2D Mario. I'm not the biggest 2D Mario fan, but I've played this one probably the most outta the four. I even got to play it in my sophomore year of high school, alongside Bowser's Inside Story, my teachers were pretty chill. This game is quite good and while I do like it, it's general impact on Mario and Nintendo as a whole is where I hold some animosity towards the game. The New Super Mario Bros. games going forward all felt very derivative from one another, it was just another New Super Mario Bros. game for that system. It was starting to infect the 3D Mario games, 3D Land and 3D World while amazing games, you could see the NSMB influence those games and how they felt more 2D than 3D. Mario's spin offs weren't faring any better, Mario Party and Paper Mario especially suffered in not only getting worse experiences, but the games were becoming less creative and more play it safe. It was all becoming basic generic Mario. Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is one of the most soulless Mario experiences I've ever played, it literally took everything that made the series special and crushed into it a lifeless husk. And the resulting domino effect of Nintendo going 2D crazy on Wii U and 3DS. A lot of the 2D games they made were amazing, but there were just way too many of them. Yoshi's Woolly World is excellent, but then Yoshi's New Island is painfully mediocre. It felt like Nintendo wasn't trying, and they weren't innovating much in that era. Nintendo felt pretty stagnate from 2012-2016. But I will say this, New Super Mario Bros. and Wii are NOT bad games, they're amazing games and they deserve to be played, even if I'm not a fan of them. And while I am a 3D Mario aficionado, I will say 2D Mario has it's place in gaming and it deserves to exist alongside 3D Mario. And I'm happy for everyone who got to experience 2D Mario with New Super Mario Bros.. I do have my preferences and tastes, but don't we all. I would scream to the top of my lungs if Super Mario Odyssey 2 got announced today. Demeech, Reecee, Tricky Nick, Starcronix, and T&D Productions, thank you for providing this Grumpus with some high quality entertainment.

New Super Mario Bros - Mario Vs Luigi is an online version of Mario Vs Luigi and uses all the original content, plus new maps, Wii powerups, and completely customizable game options. It is the best multiplayer experience I have ever had

The Mega and Mini Mushrooms actually first appeared in Mario Party 4 on the Nintendo GameCube, the former allows the player to roll 2 Dice for a total of 2-20 Spaces and squash players along the way, stealing coins. The only downside is that giant players completely bypass Item Shops, Stars, and other such events, barring Bowser on Bowser’s Gnarly Party. The Mini Mushroom restricts the Die Roll to 1-5, but allows players to access alternate paths and even certain events where they can attain additional coins or items. Why am I bringing up Mario Party 4 on a video about New Super Mario Bros? Those Mushrooms reappear in this game, sporting a new appearance which Nintendo still uses to this day. A precursor to the Mega Mushroom actually appears in a Mario Party 3 Minigame called Toadstool Titan or Mush Pit. The Mario Party 4 and New Super Mario Bros counterparts even have different Japanese names. For the former they are “デカキノコ” and “チビキノコ”, but are 「巨大キノコ」and 「マメキノコ」in the latter.

Man I remember there was this video posted in 2015 called "If Nintendo Fanboys Were 100% Honest With Us..." And the guy doing the skit vaguely called New Super Mario Bros Wii a "Hilariously bad mistake" without elaborating further and to this day I'm still confused what he meant by that. There was no way he was referring to the "IP Team" that has been rumored for years only to be confirmed by Kensuke Tanabe in an interview when Paper Mario The Origami King got released. Also interesting the rest of the comments here seem to not know that this video topic is likely about the mandate guidelines Nintendo had set for spinoff Mario games to not deviate too far in visuals, settings and established character designs (especially enemy designs) that were in New Super Mario Bros Wii

@@y2commenter246 I just explained it but basically there's a team at Nintendo that has been enforcing creative restrictions on depictions of the Mario universe ever since New Super Mario Bros. Wii released. According to Kensuke Tanabe who's the current producer of the Paper Mario series since Sticker Star: "Since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, it’s no longer possible to modify Mario characters or to create original characters that touch on the Mario universe. That means that if we aren’t using Mario characters for bosses, we need to create original characters with designs that don’t involve the Mario universe at all, like we’ve done with Olly and the stationery bosses."

@@PipeGuy64Bit Thanks for the explanation. I don't even mind the mandate, but I wish they'd branch out into the rest of the "Mario World." Bring in characters from Galaxy, Dinosaur Island, Sprixie Kingdom, Isle Delfino...all of the other "Mario" places. I know King Bob-Omb has appeared in a few more recent games, so they're not hard-locked to SMB3 (I know this was a fear shared by some in past years).

1 second ago While there were restrictions on mushroom kingdom related games from 2010-early16 the not being able to make new characters that are part of the mario world/mario art style characters thing only applies to paper mario as seen with 3d land,world,ns,b wii and u,odyssey and also golf super rush. M&l dream team that started dev after sticker star became generic also had loads of original mario style characters in it just being another point to it being paper mario only. Paper jam being generic was all on alphadream as seen in an interview on miiverse. 3d land,world,nsmb wii,u,2and odyssey also had new variants of mario speciec as well

The first NSMB was actually fantastic. I agree that the stigma only came from how overused certain elements from it were afterward. Even so, there are a lot of elements from the DS entry that never returned, enough to make it feel a lot more like a true part of 2000s Mario than Sterile Mario. We need Kab-Ombs and Snailicorns in the next Paper Mario. Looking forward to the SPM video because that's my favorite game of all time, and to me it was the last game to truly capture why I love Paper Mario.

NSMB was the last straw for me getting a DS. Love that game. You touched on the one thing I disliked, having to beat previous worlds as mini-Mario to get to World 4 and 7. Also the mini games that come with this cart showcase all the fun features of the DS, even the microphone.

As I mentioned on the community post, this was my first video game ever and I love this game and the series (except Mario U…that one’s rough, but Luigi U was awesome) to death 15 years later. I’m so glad it was this game and not something like a shooter, it led to some incredible games as a kid and still does now. It certainly suffers from being unoriginal, but at the time, it really made since to call this “New” Super Mario Bros. I think I’m just a stickler for level design, collectibles, and general gameplay feel, something that in my opinion, every game in this series except Mario U excels at (mostly the collectibles, my god that game was a NIGHTMARE to 100% with how many unfairly hidden star coins and secret exits there were, way too many hidden wall secrets without any subtle hints like a dent in the wall or an item phasing though it to clue you in. Wii at least had reasonable hints, and Luigi U made up for it with its incredible levels doesn’t and higher difficulty. I swear this entire series has made me WAY too paranoid about secrets in walls in all video games I play. Still love the games to death, probably the only series of games I know for a fact that I cannot fairly review due to nostalgia (I’m pretty hard on Mario Kart Wii for example in spite of me growing up with it, it had a LOT of problems that really cripple it trying to go back to it). Now I want to beat this game again (for the fourth time)…

One phrase can easily describe NSMB DS "when the New was TRULY New", like many others NSMB DS was my first Mario game, evading nostalgia (which can be a cancer) I think this one is the best games on the New series and Mario in general alongside New Super Luigi U (it's is still a charming package to this days) just for the people interested this is my top: 1 New Super Mario Bros DS 2 New Super Luigi U 3 New Super Mario Bros wii 4 New Super Mario Bros U 5 New Super Mario Bros 2 Aside of that, I need to say after Luigi U I consider the rest of the series mediocre or just bad, but I don't have any problems if you have Wii, U or 2 as your favorites. Just a personal opinion, it would be great if Demeech talks about the Donkey Kong games by Retro Studios because those are MASTERPIECE 2D PLATFORMERS with the same or EVEN MORE QUALITY of the Rareware DK country trilogy.

U and New Super Luigi U are fun as well and aren’t bad games although it does get tiring when what is basically the same game gets made into several different variations. The games themselves aren’t bad but it has just gotten tiring with how many they are with so little changes between each game.

New Soup 1 was great as you said here, and Wii did a great job of making it into an engaging 4 player coop experience. It was really after that we had problems. 2 and U were just bland rehashes of the previous two respective games. And U Deluxe is...well, still U, so whatever.

I never got to play the original NSMB, although I played the Wii and having my brother playing it with me made the experience really great. Now on the topic of the next game, Super Paper Mario, although lacking in gameplay for most people (I certainly enjoy it's gameplay loop), I hope you do not hold it even CLOSE to sticker era paper Mario games, it doesn't deserve the hate it got when it released, and it doesn't deserve to be bundled up with the horrid abominations of the sticker era games.

I loved the NSMB series until the third release. At that point it felt like Nintendo was done innovating and just crapping out the same game over and over again. They even LOOK the same from then onward. It was so awesome to see the Koopalings come back... but then it was them in every single game... over and over... Those first two though? Still good! Lots of promise. The second one was never a personal favorite of mine only because I am not a huge fan of co-op play and it's very much designed for that. I can't hold that against it though.

Yeah, about that, I grew up with New Super Mario Bros. 2 when I was younger. One of the first Super Mario games I have ever played. Man I miss the 3DS. First time into gaming in general, that was. (sigh)

Well I have good amount to say on new super mario bros DS but first have a happy mar10 day and congras for hitting 50k subs gator boi. I want to touch first on the story because I feel many overlook that after the galaxy doulogy it might be the darkest story in the mario series like we get to see a thunderstorm attack the castle, bowser turn into pile of bones and come back from the dead twice, which yeah compare to other mainline mario games the story feel a bit deeper and while I feel the inclusion of bowser jr is a bit weak I be honest I don't really care for his character and felt the koopalings have more going for it is more personal touch. The gameplay I think did 90% right the controls are right in place, the level design work with them and the addional new moves are a really great touch I admit in platformers I always appriaciate an advenced technique that can save you on platforming from double jumps, to air dashes and in mario's case wall jumping I maybe rather the former two due to having more utulity but consider mario isn't someone who need those type of option I see it right and the ground pound is also nice to have is smooth and take the foes in place but I be honest I don't think the brothers should have the ability to punch and kick is mostly due to sprite size and screen area is feel like is gonna be rather akward to pull off compare to a 3d game, the level design feel right and give enough for satisfy fans of the 2D mario games and new people I cannot really call a level in my mind I don't like beside one of the snake blocks one for being not very demanding, the power up line up is mostly weak the old ones does their job, the mega mushroom feel mostly automation, I be honest I don't a huge fan of the blue shell and I think if it have segments work with it in mind it could have been like an advenced 2d version of the rock mushroom from galaxy 2, I actually really like the mini muahroom since it give a high risk and high reward with the level design, the boss line up is really good and do what in my opinion what a boss line should do first and for most being the pivot point for when the game rise up in difficulty although I be honest if boom boom wasn't appearing 3 times in short burst I would consider the bowser jr encounter worse because I be honest I mostly see it as irattatintigly noisy version of boom that I am not really like and I should also mention how it use the DS second screen is solid some did better with the map idea but using it for power up slot does work well. The challenge mode is neat but not one I really care I just rather to have full control on my scrolling on the normal scrolling levels since it give me more freedom, the minigame line up is really good and use the DS really well I think my favorite for now is the bomb omb one when you need to put in different colors to each respective area and the mario and luigi mode feel like an evolution of the arcade mario bros with some mario platforming thus give it a good pvp exprience for the time. The presntation is pretty solid for mario's first appearance on model in a 2d mainline game though the enemies are bit too pixelated for my liking,I really love the backround especially for the sewer ones but I will say my main gripe in the presentation is the voice line ups of charcles more with mario than luigi I admit if you ask me his best usage of voice lines were in sunshine and the galaxy games but is feel a bit step back from the advence quadlogy he feel more stock and less joyful and kinda compressed the only line up I kinda enjoy is when he wall jumping but otherwise a pretty weak voice direction compare to previous works is not feel alive compare to other games. In the end new super mario bros DS stand in a different place for me since is appearing on my top 10 favorite mainline mario games altough very high on my list may I add is a title I give my respect consider is pretty much return 2D games back because face it if the gba could made 3D games consistenly pretty much any platform at the time would put 3D games and is overall the black sheep of the basic mainline mario games (bowser bad rescue X games) as a whole it get my rank of middle A tier a pretty respectful placement because without it I would miss the magic of 2D games consider young me was hyper focused on 3D games at the time and I belive it give title like kirby's return to dreamland,freedom planet, gunvolt,rayman origins and legend,dkc return and tropical freeze to name and many other 2D games afterward the chance they deserve to shine. As for retrospect I enjoyed from it and kinda got suprised from the lion add in the middle and you kept things go smoothly please let me know your thoughts on my review since I put almost 40 minutes on it.

So basically at 22:53, you basically explicitly stated that this game BY ITSELF started a downwards trend for the Mario franchise basically insisting all future games basically just wanted to be “New Super Mario Bros” with its more “generic elements”, well, then what about Super Mario Galaxy games? This game feels like the donkey Kong country returns of the Mario series. It was the return of the super Mario series that gave a new spin on old material, but new super Mario bros never got it’s tropical freeze.

I absolutely love New Super Mario Bros DS! I still play it to this day. New Super Mario Bros DS is still one of the best 2D Mario games. New Super Mario Bros DS, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Super Mario Bros 3, and Super Mario World are my top 4 2D Mario games.

I would say Nsmb 2 is actually the 2nd most original game in this series, like there are some lvls that are original to that game like the totem lvl in the desert lvl and this is the only game in the series to not have the same 8 worlds, the cliffside world is completly gone and they fused the jungle and beach lvl to one, and the coin gimick is good

Even the story of Super Mario World is a direct follow up of Super Mario Bros 3 by showing the Koopalings want to revenge on Mario and one of the airships from SMB3 is sunken down to bottom of the ocean in Dinosaur Land close to the Valley of Bowser.

Without New-Soup DS, there wouldn't be Sonic 4 (in which Episode 2 was one of my first Sonic games- and overall Sonic Mania) or Freedom Planet. That's a legacy I respect.

The New series of Mario games were enjoyable for the most part. The DS and Wii versions were the best. The New 2 was a dud. I haven't had enough hands-on time on the Wii U version, let alone Luigi U, but I must point out that it's superior to Deluxe. Deluxe only added a few features (and the flood of Bowsette fanart after the opening of the Pandora's Box that was the Super Crown), but took away key features that made the Wii U version unique. And, no. One cannot blame New Super Mario Bros for the stagnation that happened to the overall Mario series for a period of time.

I think what really ruined the Mario franchise was after the original New Super Mario Bros. Nintendo decided they no longer wanted to tamper with their IPs and got rid of unique characters like Toadsworth for example or just hid him, along with The Koopa Kids, and they also limited second party developers as well for their creativity with making unique character designs based off Nintendo's IPs, along with restrictions that just makes most second party Mario games more boring or completely boring. I LOVE Mario Party Super Stars but it made me sad seeing they replaced all the unique Toads that Hudson created and replaced them with common Mario enemies, the Toad with the crystal ball in the Minigame House was iconic and sad to see his happy face gone. Regardless, New Super Mario Bros on the DS is the only New Super Mario Bros game that I actually still appreciate, did 100% New Super Luigi U (lol) but that game was a quicky for a reason, the levels were shorter and condensed because of the 100 timer on each level, that game was fun, but just sick of how every single music and textures are re-used from previous games. Lazy... IMO

It's a shame that NSMB DS and Wii get such a bad rep due to how Nintendo responded to their success. The games themselves aren't bad. And I'd argue in some ways, they do more interesting things than some other far more bland Mario games. Its just that because of that surface level success, Nintendo made NSMB the entire aethetic of the Mario brand... without bothering to preserve that unique life and energy that the Mario brand had prior. As long as Mario, Luigi, Toads, and some basic Mario enemies are there... as long as you save Peach from Bowser while going through the same 8 worlds... it surely would succeed right? It obviously is NSMB's fault, but I hate that the games have to have such a bad rep to them because of that.

The real reason why the New Super Mario Brothers series went stale is because Nintendo used Super Mario World as a template to build the games. This template was gradually broken with the Wario Land series.
