In which John Green teaches you about the Market Revolution. In the first half of the 19th century, the way people lived and worked in the United States changed drastically. At play was the classic (if anything in a 30-year-old nation can be called classic) American struggle between the Jeffersonian ideal of individuals sustaining themselves on small farms vs. the Hamiltonian vision of an economy based on manufacturing and trade. I'll give you one guess who won. Too late! It was Hamilton, which is why if you live in the United States, you probably live in a city and are unlikely to be a farmer. Please resist the urge to comment about this if you live in the country and/or are a farmer. Your anecdotal experience doesn't change the fact that most people live in cities. In the early 19th century, new technologies in transportation and communication helped remake the economic system of the country. Railroads and telegraphs changed the way people moved goods and information around. The long and short of it is, the Market Revolution meant that people now went somewhere to work rather than working at home. Often, that somewhere was a factory where they worked for an hourly wage rather than getting paid for the volume of goods they manufactured. This shift in the way people work has repercussions in our daily lives right down to today. Watch as John teaches you how the Market Revolution sowed the seeds of change in the way Americans thought about the roles of women, slavery, and labor rights. Also, check out high school John wearing his Academic Decathalon medals.
Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. As America invested in its market economy, certain transcendentalists resisted the rise of production and consumerism over individual freedoms, including Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden: www.commonlit.org/texts/excer...
Ralph Waldo Emerson promoted transcendental values as well in his essay “Self-Reliance”: www.commonlit.org/texts/excer...

Magic Penguin Not frantically watching them per-say, but just refreshing my mind on the general time eras. These videos will NOT do you any good on the AP exam, as they give only very brief summaries of the time eras, and is not what is expected of an APUSH student to know at all!

April Jones Your sense of hysteria is only going to grow if you seriously feel the need to troll someone on the comments of a video of which you should be using to study. I was putting word out there that these videos aren't a super huge help if they are looking for specific evidence, and they should only be used for Just saying, and if you continue this altercation, I hope you enjoy your 3 or lower on the AP exam because you failed to do what was necessary, and instead made snobby comments toward someone whom you don't even know! :)

I don't think a lot of people realize how crappy of a place Florida would be without modern medicine and A/C. Thanks for pointing it out a few times in your videos. Florida was definitely not seen as a paradise in the past.

Born out of wedlock and raised in the West Indies, Hamilton was effectively orphaned at about the age of 11. Recognized for his abilities and talent, he was sponsored by people from his community to go to the North American mainland for his education. He attended King's College (now Columbia University), in New York City. After the American Revolutionary War, Hamilton was elected to the Continental Congress from New York. He resigned to practice law and founded the Bank of New York-source: wiki

One thing I like about you Mr. Greene, is that you do not let your political beliefs dictate what you are teaching. A lot of the time, historians and teachers let there political beliefs interfere with fact. I can see you are somewhat of a democratic liberal, but you do not let that interfere with your teachings. I highly respect you for that.

I live in between Rochester and Buffalo now just north of Medina, and I cross the Erie canal all the time! Incidentally, I was born in Rome NY, where the first shovel of dirt was dug for the Erie Canal. Rome is also where Fort Stanwix is. I got excited a few episodes back when you mentioned it too. I grew up learning about how important and historical Rome NY was.

Nobody, including John Green, would disagree that John Green is a feminist. What you're trying to contend is whether or not feminism, or this view on the wage gap in particular, is a good thing.

I was discouraged to watch the full video when you said that the Market Revolution is one of the "least studied" and that there "weren't any fancy wars, or politically charged debates". The Market Revolution is very interesting to me. So to complete watching this episode of the Crash Course, I skipped 0:37 and went to the middle part of video.

Eric Foner said that the discourse on the private realm of freedom reflected the spread of the Market Revolution. In his own words, "getting this private realm of freedom being articulated both getting ahead individually, choosing your own line of work, the rights of free labor competing in the marketplace this is a reflection of the spread of the market revolution".

Yes, Mr. John Green spoke about freedom in the context of the Market Revolution: from 12:14 to 12:24. In contrast to Mr. Foner's quotation, Mr. Green said that many people "recognized that the Market Revolution left them with much less freedom". This could be a debate: whether or not freedom was possible in the Market Revolution?

As do most Crashcourse, SciShow etc, videos. The overwhelming consensus after John and Hank's discussion on ads is that the community wants to support the endeavors of John and Hank (and others, like BrainScoop). Since they don't much like ads, they keep video ads off Vlogbrothers videos because that is, at heart, still just their 6 year conversation. But as their jobs are more and more creating online videos, we the community want to support them with a few seconds of our time.

As a resident of Upstate New York, I was excited to hear you talk about the importance of the Erie Canal, but then disappointed that, in your discussion of factories, you ignored Burden Iron Works of Troy, NY. Burden's water wheel and railroad spike machine are prime examples of changes in manufacturing in this era.
