i can understand the harsh criticism faced by some examples of their live playing that you might find on youtube, but i don't think you could say that about this one. The usuall complaint is that Cedric's vocals are lacking and I just don't think that's the case here. Have you heard the studio version of the song? they nailed it here, cedric is bang on, omar wails there's just not much to point at as a flaw. If you don't like this I suggest that the mars volta might not be the band for you.
@alvinduran65494 жыл бұрын
They were extremely inconsistent live tho. I saw them 5 times. 2 were absolutely brilliant and 3 were underwhelming. Tool is my favorite band, but the Mars Volta is 1a. Dudes were fuckin brilliant.
@hookedonplatypus3 жыл бұрын
You can enjoy studio albums where there is clean and polish versus a live performance when the guitar playing (while jamming) is more of a cacophony of noise rather than a dragging purpose. I'm all for improv'ing shit but when you're using that much distortion and just whamming away just sounds like hot garbage. It's good when they have proper song structure. However, to your last point, I would say that if you're like me, you might like their studio stuff but realize their live performances are just not something you're going to enjoy. That's okay to.
@markredford842 жыл бұрын
I saw them live when they were touring this album. Best gig I've ever seen and I was sober. His voice was amazing played for 2 hours at least no support. Drummer and omar were amazing too
@billyjackoff Жыл бұрын
I think my biggest gripe with their live shows, and it's very minor; no backing vocals. I've seen them maybe 5 times and they were always on point, but backing vocals could have really elevated those performances. Them playing Cygnus live is incredible, but it would have taken it to a new level if they had the "Nino, preparate" backing vocals.

its unfortunate, but i dont think the mars volta work too well live... the vocals are what give this song it's feel and they are far too technical, complex, and hard on the vocal chords to be pulled off live...it's ashame but it's my opinion. having said that, this song rules, and the musicianship, perfect!

i love the Mars Volta but man, their live sound was never very good! Always felt for the poor drummer John...the songs are hard enough to play at normal speed but the live speed is just too much!! The songs just don't sound good...and Cedric's vocals were mostly poor live too...I'm sure if they just slowed down to the normal pace it'd sound less apocalyptic and chaotic!!

I did see them on this tour and they didn't seem this bad though. I actually enjoyed it as a teenager. It must be something about the mix on KZbin being unforgiving although that's not an excuse for bad playing. I think the overwhelming volume too helps mask the poor musicianship.
@kevinmyrick2182 жыл бұрын
Poor musicianship? They composed this musical masterpiece. This isn’t Captain beefheart and his magic band or Zappa and the mothers of invention. Give it a break.
@firemusic822 жыл бұрын
@@firstlast-wg2on It just seems like a mess. When I saw them play this in Boston years ago, it sounded tight. It sounded like someone was playing the album, but with the volume higher than anything I've ever heard. That was the loudest show i've ever experienced. No disrespect. I love The Mars Volta. This just sounds sloppy.
