Master of Disguise is a 2002 Film, written by (in part) and staring Dana Carvey. Studio Interference hurt a film that already had a lot going against it. Today I dive in. Deep.

It just occurred to me that this was Dana Carvey's attempt at Austin Powers but it ended up being his The Love Guru
@mafeuk
@mafeuk 2 жыл бұрын
Mike Myers played Dana dirty with the Austin Powers series. Those movies could have serve as a vehicle for both Mike and Dana with Myers doing Austin Powers and Carvey playing Dr. Evil since Dr. Evil´s voice and mannerisms were based on Dana Carvey´s own impression of SNL producer Lorne Michaels. But Myers wanted to do both roles and the rest is history. At least Dana Carvey still got to do Garth and Pistacchio.

I saw Master of Disguise as a kid, and only recently got around to seeing the Austin Powers films. As I watched them, I realized the same thing, that they were both comedy movies with absurd plots that were just excuses for the star to play multiple roles. Then I wondered what an Austin Powers/Master of Disguise crossover would be like. Then I saw the Nutty Professor movies for the first time, and realized that they were a similar thing for Eddie Murphy, and began to wonder what an Austin Powers/Nutty Professor crossover would be like. My mind goes to weird places sometimes. Imagine an Austin Powers/Master of Disguise/Nutty Professor Cinematic Universe. Would that be a better or worse alternate universe? I'm not sure. It would be at least an amusing footnote in the history of film. Maybe the idea of an Austin Powers/Master of Disguise crossover would have actually worked if they kept Master of Disguise as a Mission Impossible spoof like Austin Powers is a James Bond spoof. When this video showed the scene of Pistacchio being distracted by the women with big behinds, it reminded me of the Fembots scene in Austin Powers. Shared universe confirmed!

Thinking back on it, this movie shares a LOT of similarities with Austin Powers in Goldmember and they both came out around the same time. Plot wise; both movies are about goofy spy-like characters with "unique" sets of skills and real roundabout ways of fighting crime. (Austin being a weird seductive British secret agent and Pistachio being a "Master of Disguise") Both feature love interests that are way out of the main characters league and ironically also feature scenes with attractive henchwomen to the main villain, wearing a color scheme matching the villain, who seduce the main character. (One of Bowmans blonde henchwomen with the large butts in the end credits to Master of Disguise also was a henchwoman to Goldmember in Austin Powers) The plot to Goldmember AND Master of Disguise focus on rescuing family members (Austins father and Pistachios parents) Both feature the main actors portraying MULTIPLE other characters in the plot. The only difference is that Goldmember was the THIRD Austin Powers movie and Master of Disguise BLESSINGLY didn't get a sequel. Scarily though, MOD was a financial success, THEY COULD HAVE A SCRIPT SOMEWHERE AT HAPPY MADISON FOR A SEQUEL TO THIS CRAZY MESS.

Just for the sake of banter, the butt girl scene that was in the end credits that was supposed to be a part of the movie really adds a layer of logic nightmare to this movie when you think about how it works structurally (I know that's not saying much lol). So the context of the scene is that Bowman summons out this quartet of hot women with large butts and they basically are attempting to seduce Pistachio to make him switch sides to the "Dark Side" like he mentions when they come out. The "Dark Side" of Energico is basically implied to be just using the disguise power for personal gain like money but contextually, Pistachio pretty much leans in this direction the whole movie when you think about all of his scenes and what happens to Fabbrizio making no sense at all. 1. He pesters and annoys people with his imitations and disguises despite being someone else which I highly doubt is "okay" in the Disguisey handbook since he's suposed to be using his abilities in a positive manner. 2. He uses the martial arts in slapping he was trained in or whatever to beat up Trent and Rex at that one point and even goes as far as stealing Trents credit cards. 3. In the one deleted scene where he runs away from the henchmen inside Bowmans mansion, he eats a cannoli and it supercharges his disguising ability despite being a low-level Master of Disguise. He basically uses a steroid and it allowed him to be just as good at disguising as his father. 4. His father is fully aware that he is only doing this to satisfy Bowman so he doesn't hurt his wife, that's not really a reason for a heel turn yet he still does when he puts on the fake mask. In Pistachios case, Bowman gives him a harem of women that suits his taste more than Jennifer and if he did switch sides, Pistachio would work for Bowman to obtain wealth with his skills being just as good as his fathers at this point in such a short time and the auction of items that was willingly given to him by the original owners to Fabbrizio in disguise as other people would continue. I know this is a dumb kids movie that was poorly thought out but when you look at it and try to understand the plot points and come to its conclusion of SOMEHOW attempting to be a "kid friendly Austin Powers," the most I gathered is that Pistachio is a moron who was the villain the whole time lol.

I absolutely loved this movie as a kid. It was just such a strange movie that I never heard anyone talk about. I definitely don't think it's 1% bad lol my girlfriend and I watched it a couple years ago and there are some parts that genuinely made me laugh. My girlfriend on the other hand thought the majority of it was horrible lol

The first time I listened to the first fart "Joke", I didn't hear the fart. And thus, I saw a scene with the main villain laughing maniacally, and then just petering out... And it holds, awkwardly... And that's kind of funny to me, as a parody of how such scenes would usually have a hard cut, and you're not supposed to think about what the bad guys does After taunting his captive. But no, the joke was supposed to be "Haha, poopies, man make funny toilet noise."...

You will never see a Happy Madison film shot somewhere cold or ugly. It’s always set in some tropical location (usually Hawaii). Even their first film is just golfing. Adam Sandler is unashamed about using his company for vacations.

In my opinion, this film lands in the "It's so bad that it makes it good" category. I remember loving this movie as a kid. However, as an adult, it's so surreal which makes it an enjoyable marvel to watch.

I remember seeing this movie in theaters. My Mom was so disappointed with wasting money on tickets that she grabbed my brothers and I before we stepped out of the theater, dragged us back to the ticketmaster, and bought four tickets to see Vin Diesel's XXX. The only time we saw two movies at the theater in one day.

Not gonna lie, this movie brought me boundless joy as a child. It may also have been the catalyst for a few antisocial behaviors that I had to grow out of later (such as excessive turtling). In many ways though, it made me stronger in my conviction to be a consummate eccentric.

Didn't realise this film was so hated, as a kid I just liked the silly turtle slap man. Also it seemed to me as if the deleted scenes you mentioned were always in the version I saw, but perhaps because I always watched it on tv. I assume they added those sections when it was broadcast.
