It has a stereotype of having bad special effects which tends to ignore all the times when the effects exceed that of the new show. Eg, the model shot in the opening of Trial of a Timelord. However I agree that unfortunately some people do judge effects over the quality of the story told.

I think the Master is perhaps the main reason as to why the Doctor started out as antagonistic as he was in the beginning. The Doctor seemingly attempted to bang a rock against a caveman''s head in An Unearthly Child, lied to his companions at the risk of their safety in The Daleks, and threatens to throw off his companions in The Edge of Destruction.

Jack O Brien I remember that. But then the eighth Doctor seems to loose his memory so frequently. I guess its acceptable to use any age for the Doctor because keeping track of his age is a difficult thing to do when, first of all he is from a different planet and so one year for him is different for us, and second he's a time traveller, and he follows rules where the concept of time doesn't exist. Non-linear. He's every age whilst simultaneously none.

Luke Spillane I don't understand why some people think that The Master genuinely believed that the Clangers were real aliens. He's clearly trying to see if Trenchard has a sense of humour. The look of pure frustration as he turns of the TV is just him saying 'I can't wait to kill you'

I adore Delgado and Gomez as the Master. Both are so prolific and amazing. The best story of the Delgado era is quite possibly either Mind of Evil or Claws of Axos. The Alex MacQueen Master is so fantastic as well. His quirkiness and eccentricity bounces off so well with the Seventh and Eighth Doctors.

I started watching Doctor Who at the beginning of the Jon Pertwee era, so I've always had a soft spot for Roger Delgado's Master. I can see that he was the Doctor's Professor Moriarty, the time the two spent sparring (literally and metaphorically) on screen together was amazing.

Dan Akoroyd from Ghostbusters was considered for the role of the Master in the movie at the same time Jim Carrey was approached for the role of the Doctor (that would have been a very strange movie)

Big Finish's The Two Master does explain how he got Crispy before Deadly Assassin. I won't say much aside from you need to have listened to "And You Will Obey Me..." and "Vampire of the Mind" first and the explanation makes a *HILARIOUS* amount of sense!

For me the Master is one of the least interesting thing about Doctor Who. It's just your typical Brilliant Good Guy fighting the Brilliant Bad Guy - my favorite episodes are when the Doctor is facing a mystery that even he does not fully understand. Still Gomez is Brilliant.

+jelly baby? The story where the Master explained his obsession with the drumbeat in his head made it clear it began when he, as a child, gazed into the time vortex. Since the clarity & personality of a Time Lord's mind changes with each regeneration, tinnitus (which is more of a steady ringing, not a drumbeat!) wouldn't explain the obsession. The possibility that the child picked up on all his future echoes does. That's how I understood the scene, & the tragic irony of his centuries-long obsession.

Your comments about "why" the Master turned female ignores the regeneration of the angry male Time Lord leader Barusa(?) into a reasonable Black female! Obviously, gender change is a possibility for Time Lords. On a side note, I consider the drumbeat which slowly drive the Master mad to be a brilliant piece of storytelling! The astute viewer realized that it's exactly the SAME beat as in the theme song, meaning that it literally has been there from the beginning.

I've heard theories on the master's regeneration:- The Roger Delgado Master was in his 13th incarnation and overtime turned into the Peter Pratt/Geoffrey Beevers Master due to the Master's inability to regenerate which is why he stole the person's body and looking burnt. In the Doctor Who movie, the Master was a snake due to the fact he was poisoned by some alien after he fought with the 7th doctor for the last time also as a consequence trapped on a planet, and the poison transformed the Anthony Ainley Master into the snake. After the Eric Robert Master got sucked into the eye of harmony, the time lords resurrected him which results in the master able to regenerate from Derek Jacobi to John Simm and now to Michelle Gomez (MG), so now the MG Master is in her 3rd incarnation in her new regeneration cycle according that the Master didn't regenerate during the Time War.

As a lifetime fan: except for the "crispy Master" I've never been disappointed with any of them as they are well-cast for their respective times as the Doctors are. Each Doctor gets an appropriate Master just like each Sherlock gets an appropriate Moriarity.

Hurt's Doctor and Jacobi's Master cannot meet for two reasons: 1) Tennant's Doctor doesn't recognise Jacobi when he first meets him. 2) I think the Time War Master (either MacQueen or Beevers) regenerates into a child when he becomes human, and is found naked on the coasts of the Silver Devastation.

+Ionut Maris In The Deadly Assassin it's stated that The Master is at the end of his final regeneration (13th life). The Master merely took control of tremas at the end of The Keeper of Traken, as seen in this video they morph together. there is no proper regeneration. the same happens in the TV movie. The Masters essence crawls inside of the Eric Robert's character and takes him over. there wasn't a proper on screen regeneration of the Master until the Jacobi/Simm regeneration in Utopia. in fact, had they not deliberately stated that The Master was resurrected for use in the Time War, I would have presumed Jacobi was still part of The Masters 13th incarnation. Where my counting differs from yours is you are counting the different bodies, whereas I'm counting the actual regenerations.

Just Another Fan Just because he didn't regenerate it doesn't mean it's the same body. Anthony Aniley is a total different body, so is Eric. Total different incarnation, but not obtain through regeneration. It doesn't matter the way he obtain does bodies, they're totally different incarnations. And you are not counting the Big Finish Masters it seems, Alex Macqueen is canon and definitely not the same incarnation as the rest.

I would say that it was Martha and Lucy that triggered the Doctor ex machina that acted as a "restore to the current regenerative factory settings" that he used again with his hand in _Journey's End_ , and then again in _Time of the Doctor_ when a young Matt Smith returns.

Derek Jacobi was so terribly wasted. Would have loved him to have stayed on. So much better than Simm. The thing is, you CAN'T have John Hurt and Derek Jacobi against each other... The Doctor would have recognised Yana otherwise. The Doctor would have never met this incarnation. "I was found with it.... An orphan in the storm. I was a naked child found on the coast of the Silver Devastation. Abandoned with only this."

While I may agree that the Doctor would have recognised Yana if he had met that Master before, the line about him being found as a child says nothing though, as that could be (and most likely is) a false memory (just like how John Smith had memories of being a human child, though he never was one). And actually, if say, Big Finish wanted to make Hurt and Jacobi stories, they probably could find a way around the doctor not recognising him later. I mean, if he made himself human so he wouldn't be found by the Time Lords, perhaps that wasn't all he did. Maybe he also managed to make them all forget what he looked like somehow.

It is a possibility for john hurt doctor and derek jacobi master to go against each other because due to the time war where all the doctors unite to save gallifrey, the time line was out of sync and therefore john hurt doctor wouldnt be able to remember the events. the only thing he remembers/thinks he does is that he burnt gallifrey not save it.

I thought the assessment of the different incarnations of The Master was quite good and spot on. I think however that the attention grabbing change to “The Mistress” is even worse than you say. It effectively changes the Doctor’s relationship to such a degree as to absolutely destroy it. No more “Masterful” plans and schemes just the twisted ravings of a lunatic who seems creepily obsessed with The Doctor. For the life of me I don’t know why anyone likes her. It’s like cheering someone for kicking a puppy or beating a horse.
