Growing up in the Alps-Region I can add, Heidi was a massive hit and it continues to play every year around christmas on german television. Our parents were shocked when we told them Heidi is not an european product,but an anime like one-piece and flat out refused to believe it. Here it is something like a regional treasure.

I grew up watching World Masterpiece Theater. I witnessed the tragic fate of Dog of Flanders. I awed the action packed Peter Pan. I cringed to the tough journey of Remi: Nobody's Boy and Girl. I wanted to hug and comfort Princess Sarah after she endured a lot of mistreatments and abuses. I witnessed Cedie slowly comfort the hard-hearted Count. I listened to Maria von Trapp's singing. And finally, I rooted for Romeo to make his dreams come true. WMT became a part of my childhood and grew up knowing how to confront whatever reality of life throws at me.

That's something that really bothers me...many people in Germany have a very negative attitude towards Anime...but when you take a look at all the "classic" kid's TV shows that our parents watched, you'll find out that many of them are Anime. Heidi, Nils Holgersson, Biene Maja, Alice im Wunderland, Anne mit den Roten Haaren, Die Barbapapas...all of them are Anime series.

Thanks for the excellent video. In Latin America, some of the Masterpiece Theater became classics on TV like Heidi and 3000 Leagues. But also shojo and mecha made it to this region (Mazinger Z for example). But with the arrival of Disney and Nickelodeon programming around the nineties, anime got slowly pushed away from the airwaves (even the LA version of Animax shut down in the mid-00s) and now only Dragonball remains (at least in Cartoon Network tho). At least, there's the Internet. But Anime doesn't have the same accessibility in LA than before.

Actually Animax Latinoamerica went off the air on 2011, as the 2005 change was only cosmetic (from Locomotion to Animax), but the channel was already anime-oriented at the time. The channel now is the regional version of Lifetime.

At least in Mexico now we have a little more availability to anime. About 5 years ago people wouldn't even dare to imagine mangas being sell at department stores like Sanborns, Liverpool or even Sam's Club and Mixup; even having Cinepolis showing films from time to time was unthinkable, but now I think they realized there were a market and started selling them everywhere (at least in my city). But as far as TV goes... yeah Nickelodeon and CN don't have any of that anymore, but that's worldwide.

What's ironic is that in India, Disney is airing the long-running Japanese anime series Doraemon and another Fujiko Fujio manga-based anime, Kiteretsu Daihyakka, simply known as Kiteretsu in India. According to the latest Indian sources, Doraemon is "the most popular cartoon series of all" in India. -- "10 BEST AND MOST-WATCHED CARTOON SHOWS IN INDIA," Startup City India, by startupcity_head_728_90, last updated Feb 24, 2020.

Yet another instance where I consider myself lucky I've grown up watching Italian TV, I've seen basically all World Theatre series (Heidi included - it was huuuuge in the late 70s). Oh and don't make me start on Anne of Green Gables...I've cried hot tears. The pinnacle of drama was undoubtedly Princess Sarah. As always thanks for your amazing and informative videos.

As an American, I know that most of my fellow Americans - and it seems to a great extent as well, the English-speaking West - wrongly judge how popular anime is worldwide by how popular it is in the United States. This is a huge mistake. In the U.S., we have always had a strong domestic animation industry, with little need to import animation from other countries. Japan and the US have been two nations with strong animation industries that have great global appeal. Many Japanese anime TV series that were not popular in the US were popular in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, other Asian countries, e.g., nearly all of WMT, Doraemon, Crayon Shin-chan, Captain Tsubasa, The Rose of Versailles, Candy Candy, Mischievous Twins: The Tale of St Clare's, Anpanman, etc., etc., etc.

Japanese anime titles which have had great global popularity and that have been popular in the United States include Pokémon, Dragon Ball Z, NARUTO, and Sailor Moon. Originating as a video game, Pokémon, in fact, is the No.1 highest grossing media franchise of all time, with another Japanese IP, Hello Kitty, at No 2. Both beat out famous American IPs like Mickey Mouse, Star Wars, Winnie the Pooh (a UK-US joint one, to be more accurate, just as the Transformers is a joint Japan-U.S. one), and Marvel Universe.

I've gotten kind of a general impression of the importance of these anime from other anime (and manga). I learned about 3,000 Leagues in Search of Mother from Azumanga Daioh, when Sakaki wants to name this kitten after the main character because they're both motherless (and then she starts getting emotional about it). I know I've seen at least one character mention A Dog of Flanders (in fact, now that I think about it, I think there was even an indirect reference to it in Pokemon, that part where James tells that made up story about why he ran away from home). And... I mean, I've always been aware of Anne of Green Gables, but I did get the impression that it's also culturally significant in Japan. The reference that stands out to me the most is from Wandering Son, when Shuichi Nitori pretends to be Anne. pretending to be the Lady of Shalott in that one scene. In fact, that scene in that manga really stuck in my head. The general impression I get is that Japanese people grow up with these series, or at least are aware of them through cultural osmosis, the same way we in the West are familiar with early Disney.

I grew up in Mexico watching Heidi, never realizing that it was anime. I later spoke to my parents about this show and Candy Candy and they were surprised, having never realized that shows that they grew up with were anime, they believed that due to their quality they had to be cartoons produced in the US.

nemesis962074 I had a similar experience with my Dad. He watched Speed Racer and Astro Boy when they came to the U.S and I asked him if he knew he knew they weren’t from the U.S. He had no idea at all that it was Japanese (even with the horrible lip syncing the dub provided.) I guess when it comes to quality animation if you don’t watch or know of anime you instantly think it’s American.

I just got into Anime and find your channel so helpful, new subscriber! As a former American English teacher current journalist I thought I would share something I noticed about your British Heidi pronunciation, you say Hate-ey, because of the harsh consonant sounds and round vowel sounds in British English. In American we say Hi-dee it almost sounds like high tea, even with regional dialects this only changes is the south to be Hhada like HHHi day. Both British and southern English versions sound odd to me and it was a bit distancing in this video but your editing and love of anime is so genuine I do not care plus we cannot really change our accents. PS the drama anime of Nippon totally shaped early Magic girl and drama series at TOMI animation and in shows like Lady Georgie or Candy Candy. Even though they came out at similar time you can sense a desire to keep pace if not out pace each other.

Having grown up in a former Communist country in the 90's, the World Masterpiece Theater series were cheep enough that most TV stations could afford at least one of them so I've grown watching quite a few of them. And I know for a fact several German, French and Italian TV stations were still showing these shows in the 90's. At least for Europe these shows aren't as dead as you might think. Most people over 20 in Europe remember at least a few WMT anime.

WMT animes are just too rare and too hard to get in the English speaking world, thus still pretty unknown. When there's a conversation about anime history and how Evangelion, Madoka, Ghibli, or let's also say Love Live etc "fit into" it, then I still feel a little bit uncomfortable when me the "continental European foreigner" starts talking about the WMT and how much of an impact it was. And how lucky the "old continent" was. Anne Shirley the "red haired girl with some biographical and emotional trouble" - is this were Asuka Soryu and Kyoko Sakura among others come from? Smashing the slate on Gilbert's head - was this why Haruhi threw Kyon's skull down to the desk? Take Anne's two braids and make her black - then you'll get the early Homura Akemi. Make them red again - and you'll have a young Jessie with her quite shattering Pokémon nurse "sub-arc". (Lucky Star's opening brought a shrine some fan crowds? Well, this already happened with Green Gables in Canada. And there's even a real act show feat. the story of how the original novel from L.M. Montgomery came to Japan. Music: Yuki Kajiura) James meanwhile quotes Dog of Flanders. Princess Sara, whose "opening flight" reappeared in Sailor Moon. Princess Sara was my first "anime shocker" when I was still in elementary school. And wasn't Tomino also involved in Ideon? Well, this anime didn't only make NGE later, it also contains "babies flying through space" - seems Tomino got inspired by Anne, where little angel babies fly through Anne's imagination. Ideon and Gundam are Studio Sunrise works. Well, Sunrise tried to return to the WMT formular, yet "upgraded" it with some stuff from the time when WMT started declining. "Gohan", Sailor uniforms, Italian eye shots, the "unfamiliar ceiling", the "equivalent exchange", magic RPG circles (as fantasy fakes, but for good reasons), "Sweets Shop Homura", "Sakura Sweets Fair", among others, but especially Loveless World and Strawberry Trapper - all of them would occur in Love Live, their newest -money machine- masterpiece.
@Moepowerplant
@Moepowerplant 4 жыл бұрын
So I'm not the only one to think there's a connection between WMT and Love Live, huh? I imagine the way people fangirl over LL! today is the present-day equivalent of how the older generation had received the WMT.
@Hattakiri
@Hattakiri 4 жыл бұрын
Love Live kinda combines the marketing tactics of Sailor Moon and Pokémon with the story telling techniques from the WMT, especially Anne of Green Gable. Anne grows and becomes an adult, the Cuthberts however don't change that much. They do get older tho. That stark contrast between the rapid youthful growth and change, and the upcoming standstill of the age and elderly (turned up to Eleven, I don't wanna spoil) is a premise and core element of many WMT animes and Anne. Plus: The (almost) complete lack of any so called hyperboles like magic or high tech, in contrast to the aforementioned Sailor Moon and Pokémon, and others. In Love Live's case all of that's even way more compressed, yet as impressive imho. Here about Anne from the same KZbinr (slight spoiler): kzbin.info/www/bejne/b32XqpiueqanqKs Without Love Live also no Kimi No Na Wa among others.

And a lot of similar anime where made, just not under the WMT banner, like Biene Maja, Wickie, Alfred J Kwak, Treasure Island and Nobody's Boy Remy. And Anno finally combined the mecha and WMT market with Nadia. I like to think that Uchuusen Sagittarius also counts.

Since I came across World Masterpiece Theater animes I've stopped watching Naruto, One Piece, etc. Heidi, Girl of the Alps is the reason I want to live in 1800's especially in Switzerland. For me; *"Remi, Nobody's Girl"* is better than *Naruto*. I hope World Masterpiece Theater comes back again and strong. I want more anime like Heidi, Girl of the Alps; Remi Nobody's Girl; Anne of Green Gables; Marco; Romeo's Blue Skies; Princess Sara; Anne before green gables, etc. Love from California.

It's interesting seeing the parallels of Masterpiece Anime with the popular 70's shows in America. Wholesome christian shows like Little House on the Prairie and the Waltons were big in a time when people were struggling with changing times. It makes sense that the Masterpiece Anime was looked at favorably. I even remember growing up with the show "The Flying House" (Tondera Hausu no Daibōken). It's crazy realizing how much anime I've been introduced to before I even knew what it was.

Neat to gain some insight into WMT and the passion behind it. I found it a few years ago and it's been one of my most memorable experiences with anime (and I've seen hundreds). I started up Akage no Anne a few days ago so this definitely got me in the mood for more. I'd say my favorite WMT work is Les Mis: Shoujo Cosette. Its themes of redemption and good will truly had a one of a kind impact on me.

I know this video is old but... I grew up watching this, I'm french and i too passed my summers in the mountains, tho it wasent the alps, but it still reminded me of my summers and it was just a wonderful breath of fresh air while wating for summer to finally come so i can go and run around with my dogs exploring waterver area dad desided was suitable enogh for is fishing. It also traumatised me in so. Many. Ways. My memories are blurry cause they where a lot of show like heidi who existed at the time about little boys or girls living in the mountains and they where all dealing with some VERY horrible death. The one little brother who fell into a cliff and the father saying "I dont think we will even find his corps...". A boy and his dogs behing thrown into spanish prison (this on i think it was in the animated version of Belle et Sebastien) and of course this fucking scene where heidi accidentaly yeet a fucking girl in a wheelchair into and fucking pit or somthing. I always credit thos shows whith my fear of height!

wonderful video! I just have one advice for you. Don't limit the background music to lofi hiphop. Don't be afraid to use some more heavily emotional music if it fits to your writing. Various parts of your talking were quite touching to me and I felt like a cognitive dissonance for not having a touching song in the background. At 1:55 when you talk about the wave of creators that came after and uses a colorful frame full of flowers and you could switch to a more colorful and delicate song like the theme song to Kiki's Delivery Service by Joy Hisaishi for example. Lofi hiphop is very comfortable to listen to when someone is talking and it's really neutral when it comes to emotion, it won't attack your heart, what may be a advantage in some contexts (when we are studying or working), but when you put an emotional music in the background, you can pull of emotional response from your viewers even when the subject is not so colorful, but you are talking about history and all of it is colorful. lofi is good, but consider not using it in the entire video. It's too neutral, because, although they use samples from originally emotional songs, they cut it to fit in certain loops and thus they kill the development of the song creating a good photography of something that was colorful but has no movement, no life. Lofi is interesting, but I would give more attention and maybe fall in love with your video if the bgm were more heart melting.. u know
