Other exciting things: did you know that in the original script, humans weren't supposed to be a source of energy for the machines, but rather a processor? Because to keep a human alive in a cocoon, you have to inject more energy than you can draw from it, and the Wachovskis had originally planned for the machines to use human brains as a neural network. Hence this idea that “reality is in our minds”, much more to the 1st degree in this case. But since AI was so poorly understood in 1999, they had to simplify the script. And also, Smith was the one. Remember the 3 criteria of the one: 1- to be born in the Matrix (which is not the case for humans), 2- to be able to reshape the Matrix as he pleases (Neo has powers but can't reshape the Matrix in his own image like Smith can), and 3- to be able to make the Matrix collapse. Neo even protected the Matrix from Smith. As a result, the trilogy ends with Stockhlom syndrome, with humans celebrating their captivity. One more thing: the spiritual initiation Neo undergoes in 1... ticks all the boxes of sectarian indoctrination. From the famous “If you're not one of us, you must be one of them” to the banishment of the pleasures of the flesh (don't look at the woman in red), as well as the break with one's former life and loved ones (“you can't go back”, which is also called into question), the hierarchical superior whom everyone obeys, and so on. Moreover, this superior, this guide, whose name is Morpheus... Is Morpheus a god who puts people to sleep or a god who wakes them up? The oracle itself says he's totally blind. We see in 1 that when Neo pulls out a diskette from a book, it's titled “Simulacra and Simulation”. The Wachovskis have spoken out about the book from which they drew their inspiration, also explaining that it was intended to serve as a box, so it was HOLLOW. Empty. All this philosophical idealism is really a smokescreen for the inevitability of the winning system. Ah. one last thing. To be liberated or not doesn't change anything, in both cases, they are manipulated. And this is represented by geography. The humans in their red pods are positioned all around large towers, and the human city, cylindrical in shape, with the red-lit rooms dug out of the ground, around the cylindrical hole. The same. The Wachovskis explained that, once in reality, humans reorganize themselves into armies, hierarchical systems, etc., and that this doesn't change anything. That the 2 doors in the architect's house came back the same. That even the choice of the blue or red pill was just an illusion. As the Merovingian says: there is no choice.

@@movieswelove99 Identity can be a funny thing. Denial of a person's identity is just one of the ways in which abusive people can harm their victims. It is a way of diminishing the victim's self worth. Ultimately, this tactic can be traced back to military strategy designed to demoralize an enemy force. It implies that the abuser has complete control over the victim. This is touched on in one of the sequels as neo speaks to one of Zion's counsel members at night. However, the OP is right in saying that it doesn't necessarily refer to transgenderism specifically. But I'm sure it was a big part of their experience in life. Deadnaming is very much a part of the experience those who transition have to contend with. As such to further claim it has 'nothing to do with' is an uninformed opinion.

Don't know if anyone mentioned it already, but the film copied a lot on the 70s german "Welt am Draht" from Rainer Werner Fassbender (there are 2 parts). The style of the german and the american version couldn't be more apart, but the story is just the same. Fassbender was ahead of his time, he told this story in the way, that was possible back then, given the technology status quo of the 70s. The moment the internet was born, this ideas like Fassbenders were, too. "Welt am Draht" is one of the most remarkable german SF-Movies in my eyes.

I don't know how Jean Reno feels about it, and only slightly more about how Will Smith does. The trans trope is present in the whole cyberpunk genre. If you watch some OVA (original video animation) coming from Japan in the 80s and 90s you can clearly see how genres are depicted in a much more subtle way in the future. I think about films like Cyber City Oedo or Wicked City, or even Ninja Scroll where bodies had also some sort of magical quality (an old man capable of turning into a tree, a young lady with venom blood and so on). The Man machine, fluid sxuality, a future where the dichotomy man-woman is surpassed are all present in a ton of cyberpunk anime long before the matrix. The sisters didn't reinvent the wheel or created something original with the trans theme, it was already robustly present in the genre.
