The key to understanding this movie is the scene where Smith says "Warner Bros is going to make Matrix 4 with or without us." That was literally the case in real life, so instead of letting the franchise be completely taken out of their hands, Lana Wachowski used the opportunity to make the story about a creator reckoning with the legacy of their past work. It's very metatextual and that's going to rub a lot of people the wrong way.

So to Steven’s question about the threat: there was a period of peace for a long time, which is how the humans were able to build that new city and make the progress they made. But there was a machine civil war that broke out once the power plants stopped producing as much energy (the peace allowed humans to leave the matrix whenever they wanted). This is what led to the Analyst creating a new matrix that used Neo and Trinity as the main source of power. Humans hooked up to it are enslaved again, but it’s not all machines vs humans anymore. Some machines have chosen to stay working with humans for the sake of remaking the world

Fun Fact: The crew of the ship is actors from Sens8. The basics of Matrix movies are fairly simple. Don't let the world tell you who you are. Love is only real when you see and accept the authentic person. Encourage the people you love to be the best version of themselves and not succumb to fear of what the world will think. And WAKE UP!!! This movie refines those Ideas and adds a few new ones. Most importantly; We're not done. The message was received by a lot of people, but we didn't reach everyone. Technology is a weapon, but it's also a tool we can use to free ourselves. The older generation is too concerned with holding on to previous wins, the younger generation understands that it's NOT ENOUGH. The things that inspire you to greatness matter.

Smith is a virus that wants to roam free. The purged programs can come back if the Matrix rolls back to the previous version. Either heroes death triggers the reset. The Analyst wants his version to stay. There was no conflict before the escape that I could see. Neo was just aware enough to create the modal that made his Morpheus/Smith game character self aware. I think the end goal is to make humanity aware and give everyone a choice to stay or exit, instead of the few that see the glitches or code.

20:49 - I also half had the same question whilst secretly hoping they'd make more Matrix films! I rationalise it as this - the end of the 3rd film, Trinity is presumed Dead. Neo is presumed Dead. We never knew for sure if they died, nobody mentioned them except for the little girl who made the Sunrise for Neo... That girl is now a woman in the 4th Matrix film and plays a big part! Watch this film in your own time again and more will open up to you - it is deeper than the haters love to say about it sucking - loads of people said the same thing about Reloaded and Revolutions back in the day when they were new and a few years later. Now people 'love' those films! I always loved them, not as much as the OG ofc, but the same applies for this 4th Matrix and prolly the 5th Matrix film. 27:39 - I see what you are saying here, but at the same time - what other movies waited nearly 20 effing years for a follow-up film after 1 massive hit and two average/hated sequels? Those sequels are only half remembered after that time, even by those whop WATCHED THEM!! I am thankful for those flashbacks! But focusing on the 4th Matrix film here, I found it confusing, nostalgic yet intriguing also repeating past success (Apple style) and not innovating. But then the second half of the film hit and it was still a bit confusing but I was invested again! I watched it a second time a year later and it all made sense a LOT more than first viewing! The haters who say it sucked I wager have NOT watched it a second time!!! lol DO IT!!! Yes you, you in the blue tee shirt, or you. Wearing the blue denim jeans. Or you, with the blue ear-rings in! Or you whose dog's name is Blue... re-watch the 4th Matrix film again! Then wait 20 years - future fans will love it like they now magically do for Reloaded and Revolutions. 43:05 - Spider-man, as in the old one in the early 2000s? Or some remake of a remake of a remake in an alternate reality - THAT franchise needs to end! It has lost all meaning in its transitions...see what I did there? I look forward to The Matrix 5! Where we finally live in a world post "Wokedemic"!!!

I totally get why a lot of people don’t like this movie. That said…I’m transgender, and the Matrix movies (all four of them) take on a completely new meaning when viewed from the lens of two trans women working out who they were while making the first three, and then one of those trans women looking back of being trans for a couple of decades. Also, as to whether this movie tarnishes the others…I disagree. It improves two and three retroactively. But I also watched the first three again right before this one with my 13 year old….so it was all fresh.

For all their faults, the 2 sequel films at least had some credible action sequences and great visuals with a unique style. This movie had average at best fight sequences, with some terrible camera work. Combined with a convoluted, overly meta story, it makes for a shockingly bad movie.

I actually enjoyed this Matrix, but I see the story from a different angle that I’ll call “Anti-Fanservice”.😁 It was made so obvious in the first ten minutes that it’s the franchise commenting on itself - and its audience’s expectations. In that respect it’s like *The Last Jedi* or *End of Evangelion* in that the creators know full well they can never be what blew fans away the first time out, so why not indulge in the pure pleasure of f***ing with them? E.g. Luke tossing the saber over his shoulder and huffing off in TLJ - when I saw that scene, my first thought was “Oh… so we’re doing THIS are we?“😂😂😂 I think filmmakers are somewhat justified in doing this with beloved and hugely popular franchises, because we as fans take ourselves and our opinions WAY too seriously sometimes. We want tomorrow’s awesome movie today, but want it to be exactly like yesterday’s. It’s good to be reminded that our perceptions play as much of a role as the objective quality of the work, and that we’ll NEVER be moved as forcefully by ANYTHING as when we saw it the first time. Especially if we were kids then.😎

Here is the main important aspects of the movie explained for both of you: 1) the beginning of the movie takes place in a Simulation (a Modal) with NPCs Thomas (Neo) created, designed to develop the A.I. of the NPCs inside, "Agent Smith" was an A.I. that had traits of Morpheus and Agent Smith, one could call him "Morpheus 2.0" 1.5) all the flash backs are pieces of Neo's real memories, but the blue pills/The Analyst are pushing "Thomas" to think he's having delusional thoughts of things that never happened 2) The CEO/president of Deus Machina is a new version of Smith with some of smith's old code and memories, but is not exact same Smith, but the imprinted code from Neo still allows him to resist and disobey the new Matrix (vers. 7), he also inherited the Orcale's habit for smoking 2.5) The Machines used advanced cybernetic and bio technology to repair and restore Neo and Trinity's injured bodies and re-activate their brains then plugged them back in, it didn't go well at first because of their altered consciousness and connection to The Source, many sentinels close by got triggered to self destruct 3) There was a purge from the Analyst and the "suits" a group of Systems Manager A.I. that want to keep using humans, especially Neo and Trinity as "batteries" plugged into the Power Plant/Matrix system 4) Friendly self-aware sentient machines and A.I. are called *Sythients* like Kujaku and Cybebe they aren't "animals" or "pets", the Synthients helped humans build the technologically more advanced city Io (eye-oh) where humans and synthients live together in peace. The machines that want to still use humans as batteries are in a "cold war" situation with Io after the past civil war of machine vs machine (triggered by less power from the power plants due to more people being unplugged and returned to Zion). Zion unfortunately got destroyed during the civil war 5) Merovigian is now a homeless crazy man because he was stripped of his abilities and his "power" during the purge and The Architect was likely deleted, and the Oracle either vanished or was also deleted during the purge, the Analyst has taked on the roles of both of them. 6) Trinity has a copy of the Source Code in her mind likely due to when Neo revived Trinity in Reloaded, and he unknowingly copied his source code into Trinity. This allowed her to also have the abilities and awareness of "the One" like Neo 7) at the end Neo and Trinity are now essentially the new System Operators for the Matrix system and can get help from the Synthients to remake the power generator system that is no longer dependent on human in pods, and reveal the full truth to the "blue pill" people inside the Matrix and give them a real choice to stay or leave instead of false choices. to summarize, the movie is about Thomas (Neo) dealing with Depression & Disassociation (as many with Clinical Depression or General Anxiety or even gender dyphoria experience) trauma that was being gaslighted by a fake therapist (the Analyst) , Thomas(Neo) then trying to reconnect with his loved one (Trinity) and then when finally both regain self actualization and agency, them both rising above their trauma & being successful and choosing what they want to do together.. IMO the movie is a 10 out of 10

I loved it! Thought it was sweet, nostalgic, and super romantic. It seems weird and "off" because it's so meta & self-aware. Where the original trilogy was visually minimalistic, technically precise, and "cold" in aspect, this film felt messy, improvised, and warm to look at. Definitely different than the other 3, but the philosophical questions the originals asked are still present: do our memories make us who we are? Are we able to create our own realities? How do we define & construct our identities? Is true love eternal? Is free will just an illusion? For some reason this movie reminded me a lot of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", another favorite. It's trippy and beautiful, loved that they embraced a realistic aging of Neo and Trinity, probably because I've aged right along with them. LOL! Those AARP cards come at you quick, man

I'm good with this one, but any others are going to have to be stand alone. About the Smith bit though, don't forget that his and Neo's code is linked together. So to have a Matrix with Neo integrated into it, Smith has to exist to balance him out. Any future plots with Smith will prolly change that up though with Trinity's upgrade.

It's almost as if the writers assume you already know whats happening. The same still holds up for this movie. Those flashbacks are short and sweet, almost literal flashes. Not drawn out reenactments that serve as deposition to fill us in on what happened, but quick reminders of key moments to bridge specific elements. While I agree that a good story shouldn't need a flashback to explain what is happening, they do a good job in this movie of keeping the flashbacks short

I love all 3 Matrix movies, so I was super excited for this one but after watching it I’m 50/50 on it, not quite sure what I think…liked some things lost me with others it just didn’t quite feel like the Matrix we know. Perhaps I’ll wait to see where the next movie goes if they make another but like you guys I’m scared they will mess it up. I did hear something about the Animatrix (Matrix Anthology that fills in some history) possibly getting more content so hopefully that’s good.

Your expressions in the thumbnail. 😂 I feel you. After watching the trailer, I was *so* excited to see this offering. I’d watched the original in the theater and got my ticket to see this one, despite it being in HBOMax. I just knew that it was going to be spectacular. Well, within the first 20 minutes, I fell asleep. At the time I didn’t even realize. I must’ve dozed off several times because when I got home, I was thinking, “huh. They didn’t show the ‘rubber duck’ and other scenes from the trailer.” The next day, I watched it again at home. Disappointing can only describe my feeling. The choppy action & fight scenes- it’s like they didn’t want us to focus on them. So many cuts between hits and kicks, that the fight scenes just didn’t feel powerful or strong. That awful special effect that they used when ‘Morpheus’ had taken the red pill, and at different points with NPH- ugh, it felt so cheap. I did enjoy many of the meta elements, but I feel that it went a bit sideways and often clashed with the moments of nostalgia. Also, the tone of the movie was sometimes a bit too much on the comical side- for my taste, anyway. Aside from all of that, something else about the movie feeling off, was nagging me. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Then Steven mentioned it- the threat. That was it! When you said that the treat wasn’t clear, that brought light to the feeling that I couldn’t quite express. I didn’t feel any overarching worry, anxiety or threat of the agents or the machines. The agents didn’t seem scary, menacing or overly threatening. It reminded me of Terminator 3. I didn’t feel the dread or distress with that terminator as I had with Arnold and Robert Patrick’s iterations. The same here. I’d give it a 5/10. I enjoyed seeing Keanu and Carrie Ann Moss together again. Their story and interactions were the most compelling. I loved the concept, but feel that the execution was poor. 🙁

Thanks for allowing us to tap in with you as you went through this movie trying to like it but ultimately being disappointed as much as I was when I saw it in the theater. This particularly made it an interesting reaction video. I feel that maybe there was an interesting premise with the psycholigst and Neo being trapped in therapy sessions but it got way too convoluted way too quick. I'm even wondering if the creators knew what they were doing when they got Trinity out using that new girl all while riding a motorcycle in the Matrix. It just didn't match up.

With all respect, I think alot of people are not thinking about the movie Analytically. They arent trying to make sense of it because their initial reaction is to dismiss what they dont understand and dislike what they dont approve of. The creators of this franchise don't owe us validation for our preconceived notions of what we thought the Matrix was. Its Their Creation, not ours, and we should attempt to decipher why things happened the way they did rather than trying to devalue the story by holding on to preconceived ideas from the past. Everything evolves and everything changes. This story took a turn that no one expected and a lot of people just don't approve of. In truth, theres nothing wrong with not liking something. But not liking the way a story evolved without truly understanding why it evolved that way is like not liking a new kind of pizza without ever having tried it. Sure you had your old pizza and you enjoyed that, and this new pizza looks different and doesnt have the same ingredients as the old one. But so what? Try it, study it. Find ways to understand why it might make sense. To deny it merely because you prefer what came before just means one thing. You have a bias that's not allowing you to think outside your own assumptions. Lastly, I'm not even saying the movie is amazing. In fact, I can definitely see some flaws I hope are corrected in a sequel film. That said I think those who are writing off this film completely are "stuck in a matrix of their own" as Naobi put it. Many have been stuck in their own opinions, assumptions, theories, and conclusions of the Matrix story. In that sense many are "stuck in a matrix of their own" as Naobi says. We need to unplug from our biases and look at the movie more objectively. I say that for myself as much as anyone else. We all need to unplug a bit more, because we've been living in an illusion of assumptions and theories that we all thought were valid. And now we're seeing that maybe that wasn't the case. And instead of being humble and trying to understand it better, some of us are just outright denying any attempt to do so. I think the film was good but not great. 7.5/10 :) Time will tell if it was a set up for a greater story or just a poorly executed story.

I really didn't have much of a problem understanding this movie. The machines were keeping Neo asleep by convincing him it was all a game and he was having psycotic breaks. The thing is: the movie agrees with you, it does not want to have been made. It is such a meta response to forced sequels that it just slaps you with beign everything you thought you wanted and everything you feared it could be. I like it for that, if you didn't like the first few sequels, you will hate this as well. I'm more on the just enyoing bold direction side.
@bahamutskingdom Жыл бұрын
After watching the reaction, I can seriously say I can definitely see the meaning behind the movie. The many meanings actually. I am not certain why it was so poorly received. I mean Scream 5 had a higher score overall. (And it is a great movie as well) I think I will pick this up, so I can see all of it. I think also this one will need further explanation (follow up films) or time for it to be more widely received. It is missing Morpheus and Agent Smith.And that seemed like the biggest gripes. To answer the final question: Simple.....No. Is Star Wars tarnished because my generation hated the prequels just as much if not more than the new generation hated the sequels? (And we did trust me) Is The Lord of the Rings ruined because of The Hobbit? People in this day and age want the past, but get pissed when the do and or do not get it. They bitch when they get what they want EXACTLY, or do not get what they want. I am probably the only person in the world who truly loved a completely different direction of Last Jedi. But I am old enough to know how new everything was when the original trilogy came out. I also think there was less effort in this BECAUSE the original film makers DID NOT WANT TO DO IT. So they jacked it in order for it to not be good enough to money soak the fuck out of it.

Did anyone have a problem with The Matrix not feeling different from the real world? In the original the real world felt empty and dirty. In this one the real world didn't look or feel so bad. The real world itself felt like the matrix. I don't know. Just me. Edit: Retirement 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@AWSVids3 жыл бұрын
I think that's kinda intentional. The real world was in a more peaceful state than it was during the original trilogy. There was a shaky truce established at the end of Revolutions, which is kinda sorta mostly still holding, but not really, which is why they hid Io. That's a theme I actually really like about the movie, by the way... the idea that progress is always two steps forward, one step back, and that the step back can feel demoralizing, like the fighting that won that step was for nothing, but it wasn't, because you still have that other step of progress that's holding ground. Io is run more comfortably and progressively by Niobe than Zion was by its leaders. They have some machines on their side and are developing organic food, etc. It was meant to be better than Zion and feel like a place worth keeping, which is why Niobe was so scared of losing it by fucking around in the Matrix and possibly pissing off the machines again enough to come find them.

@@AWSVids I appreciate your time and answer. When I was young watching the original movie on VHS I didn't fully grasp what was happening obviously but I knew I preferred it when they where in that place with the cool leather jackets and glasses. Watching this one, I couldn't help but feel "there was no need" after every 15 minutes or so. But hey, it's not a crime making a movie.

I got Matrix, it was simple to understand. It just doesn't make sense why this movie exists. I got why the Analyst resurrected Neo & Trinity; power & control; fine. But why did Bugs rescue Neo? Why do Bugs & co team-up with Neo to rescue Trinity? Why was all of it worth risking all out war with the non-allied machines? And why now; what's the urgency? These are basic motives that need to be understood to make a story compelling.

Answer to your question - I don't think the Matrix movie is tarnished and I agree with you that this should have been a solo movie, but I do not think this new movie invalidates the original.
