They said HUGO was too old for the part now, but what they could have done was make Hugo the Architect or NPHs character, and Agent Smith was designed in his image, but the Matrix evolved on its own, and created its own sentient agent Smith eliminating his design. This makes a good bit of sense the more I think about it. Smith and Neo understand that they both ultimately want the same thing -- the deconstruction or reconstruction of the Matrix and individual agency. This is why Smith decides to pursue his own path and briefly ally with Neo in the fight against the Analyst. Their goals are aligned. But more than this, they simply can't be complete without each other. Together _they_ are The One. So if Neo starts doubting himself, it would be Smith before any other who would recognize this and be first to put Neo back on the right path. That doesn't mean he wants to be Neo's friend -- just that he'll kick a boot up Neo's arse and get him going again. Resolution is the strongest motivator after all.

@@4589dude That's not how I understand her character. She's more akin to a catalyst than a reactant. It's in her name -- she completes the equation. Consider Neo and Smith to be like oxygen and fuel. Completely inert on their own or even in close proximity to one another (as seen by how they even work for the same company!) But introduce a catalyst -- a little bit of heat or a spark -- and you get combustion. And the whole damn Matrix comes burning down around them all. This is what the Analyst was trying to prevent. But the Analyst got something wrong! To his credit, he realized he needed to keep Neo and Trinity _just far enough_ apart. Unfortunately for him the Analyst mistook Trinity for being Neo's opposite number when this has always been Smith. Even in the Analyst's best calculations, he never anticipated that The One isn't _just_ Neo and Trinity, but there has to be Smith as well. This is actually explained via the existence of AI Morpheus. He's on the brink of true self-awareness inside Neo's quarantined model, all he needed was a nudge in the right direction. In his case, that came from outside the Matrix. The same is true for Neo, Smith and Trinity.

My first reaction to this is that I like the idea of Smith and Thomas Anderson starting off as friends of some kind (which they do end up having in the actual Resurrection film) but having the two original actors makes it feel better. That said, I agree with other commenters saying that Hugo Weaving has a look akin to the Architect here, especially with the theory of Smith being made in the Architect's image.

Smith was a program from the previous matrix program, as committed to doing his job as he was and then going rouge to take over the matrix. After his memory returned in PT.4 his reasoning to go after Neo again was unfounded simply bcos he should have realized he can’t Kill Neo, definitely not with bullets or trying to fuse with him and bcos it wasn’t Hugo weaving returning they could have just made the new guy Smith 2.0 & he bcoms conflicted and decides to help Neo this time around. Making for a more interesting character arc if they decided to continue the franchise.

This is what we needed in a Matrix 4 movie. Neo and Smith joining forces. Smith having gained some sense of humanity and trying to get Neo back to his old self after he had become more machine. Would have been a much more compelling story than a not so subtle 2 hour dig at WB for milking the franchise. The part everyone seems to ignore when it comes to artificial intelligence is that they have no emotions. That means no hatred. Smith would have no reason to hate Neo and would be incapable of it. He would only be logical. And the more time ai spends around humans interacting with them and learning from them the more it learns from them and adapts to them. They've stated in previous movies that the matrix itself has been reset countless times but the software remains the same. So while the Matrix changes, the ai (agents like Smith) stay the same. and since Smith has transcended the code of the Matrix basically becoming "The One" himself, he would theoretically keep all his "memories" of previous interactions with the humans in previous simulations and would not be rebooted with the rest of the matrix and other agents. Him deciding to help the humans is extremely plausible.

The Matrix Rebooted Coming off the success of the John Wick films, Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves begins filming for a new Matrix trilogy however in his first scene, an unknown 'stunt woman' kidnaps Reeves taking him off set to explain to him who he really is. His name is Thomas Anderson aka Neo and 40 years ago he brought peace to the human race by sacrificing himself. Keanu is concerned at this crazed woman as Keanu heads to his trailer. There he is met by Hugo Weaving and Lana Wachowski, Keanu explains the situation to them as Hugo seems concerned, Lana laughs it off. Before he can say more, the stunt woman appears and holds a gun to Lana. As she pulls the trigger, Lana dodges the bullet as she grabs the stunt woman by the neck and picks her up with one hand. Hugo seeing Lana dodge and disarm the stunt woman has his Aussie accent change to his Smith's cadence as Keanu is taken back. "They paired us together like lovers... I wonder who's behind this version?" "Hugo?" "Smith. Mr. Anderson. It has always been... Smith" Keanu backs out scared as Security pop up out of nowhere eerily similar to Agents. The security pull out Desert Eagles. The stunt woman is thrown through the trailer's door. "Fuck this" Security turn their Eagles on the stunt woman and Hugo as they open fire. Hugo dodges each and every bullet like an Agent. The director, Lana, yells out at them to stop. Carrie-Anne Moss tells Keanu to jump on as Keanu jumps on the bike. "Neo..." "Trinity?" The security then open fire on the two. Neil Patrick Harris berates the Security. "Stand down, you fucking morons you're going to kill Lana, shes not a fucking program dipshits. And they wonder why we got rid of you Agents" 😅😅 Security: "Sorry boss" Hugo/Smith meets up with Trinity and Neo in a LA underpass. Keanu: Whats going on? Carrie Anne: a reboot... However this version of the Matrix seems to be much more different than the rest... Stronger than previous versions. Hugo (in Smiths voice): Thats because it is, Mr. Anderson. Keanu: I saw you take a whole clip. Hugo: The watcher, he is the new power who purged the Oracle and the Architect. This is his Matrix. Keanu: you mean Lana? Smith: merely a puppet, Mr. Anderson. Keanu; my name is Keanu. Carrie Anne: how is any of this possible? Smith: thats what I'm going to find out snd see. I'd advise you two to try and find fnd somewhere lay low. The Matrix Rebooted would have been a new Matrix which has given Nek the identity of a famous actor and relegated the Matrix to one really good film along with two bad sequels. This new Matrix is OUR real world and NPH is the new designer of this version. Smith, Trinity and Neo are the heroes and would have figjt scenes rhat feel real once Neo remembers who he is - he ditches the Keanu name.

y'kno, had they not shoehorned smith back in via a recast they could've had hugo weaving show up as smith and just not want to fight neo anymore perhaps commenting on how being so close to winning he finally understood that a world made of him was boring and his ultimate goal was pointless because it all just reset in the end anyway. I think a machine acknowledging that humanity's differences is what makes them interesting would've been huge and there would be that subtle nod that probably hugo good as he is probably couldn't do the fight scenes like they did them in the original anyway. god resurrections was such a wasted opportunity.
