@@dewycocoa you're wrong, the Maya and Aztec knew eachother, there was an Aztec colony in Guatemala, the Maya knew them as the people that sacrificed to the Gods, they learned that from a previous culture: the Teotihuacan (their real name is lost). Even when Hernán Cortes arrived to the Maya cities they presented him an Aztec princess to help him translate during his quest. And now in 2021 there are still Maya people living like their ancestors did.

It amazes me that in 2023 people still believe in the same type of nonsense but call it Christianity. Whether it's believing that the stars were your dead loved ones ,or warriors ascended to glory, Or that some obscure hybrid Jewish/Akkadian god hung them there adhering a seven day gestation period. It's amazing that in the lack of fact man will suffice to myth simply to feed the ego of being wiser than the one standing next to you.

@@katzea.a7880 There is only one Maya tribe now that hasn't converted to Christianity, it's the Northern Lacandon Maya if I'm not mistaken. They descend from lowland Maya who fled into the jungle from Spanish conquistadors in the 15/16th century, and evaded major contact with the outside world until the 19th century. Their brothers with a similar history, the Southern Lacandon were also pagan until the 50's when they were converted en masse.

If you think about the idea that the world ended in 2012 according to the Mayan calendar (meaning it starts over) that would've been the end of the 5 cycles during a roughly 8 year period. I don't know if the numbers actually match up, but this year would be the end of the next 5 cycles/8 year period and the beginning of the next 5 cycle/8 years. I'm certain that I'm wrong in this, so don't quote me on it.

Trying to learn more about this and am having trouble finding more information about the "Stranger From The West". Is this commonly translated as something else?

I'm starting to doubt if this myth is an actual Mayan myth. Because I've been looking for sources regarding Chak Ek, and barely find any. And then when I find deities related to Venus, closest is Kukulcan, who follows Kin Ahaw. Please I need a reliable source in order to see if this is true

Loved the story. Its wonderful to observe how, with limited knowledge (in today's comparisuon) the ancient Mayan woved stories about their observations of so many phenomena. Truly it was a stable and peaceful civilization. Thanks TED-Ed.

Henry Rincavage Possibly Jupiter. None of this will make any sense until you read Velikovsky and realize the position of the planets was dramatically different in the recent past (last 20,000 years)

Muyiwa Francis I do find it fascinating the level of creative imagination blossoming from the human being in the ancient world... if you think about were so used to all the modern luxurious but for them it was never seen before, never thought of before, never lived before, only in the minds of man... using nature and there own experiences in life to make sense of the chaotic world around them and the mythology storytelling being the most powerful tool to cope with reality and thrive.

@@camerontaylor7471 They also had the luxury of TIME. These sort of mythologies could only come from years and years of nothing more than the stars, fire and stories to occupy them at night. I was stunned yesterday when I realised I had not really looked up at the clouds for months. They were beautiful. We NEED more unoccupied leisure time.

@@sosensualandfree Most of us humans can easily find ways to distract ourselves from our minds. Most often even without realizing we are escaping reality. I'm not speaking for all of us, just asking: How often do we actually sit in silence and just watch, or listen. To hear nature around you. To see the stars or the skies. To feel your heartbeat, to feel the invisible breeze that moves the leaves of a tree, watching a bird flying by, watching our thoughts pass by without judgement. To be purely and exclusively paying attention to nature and ourselves and be one with that what surrounds you.... Bla, bla bla. I could ramble on. I just think that if I (or we) were to replace more of the time I spend distracting myself in one way or another, with a certain form of meditation/thinking or just watching, I'd have so many more revelations about reality and my life! :)
