The McLaren 720S is the pinnacle of petrol-only super sportscar engineering. For just over $300,000, depending on options, you get a (claimed) 710 HP twin-turbo 4.0L V8 pushing around a very light, very aerodynamic, and very advanced carbon fiber monocoque. To drive it, you'd swear it makes 800 horsepower. It's capable of 9-second quarter miles out of the box, and top speeds in excess of 210 mph. It looks like something between a space ship and a prototype race car, and yet, it's the most comfortable supercar on sale. It's practical. It's easy. And, for 99% of my week with it, it worked flawlessly.
McLaren provided the car, insurance, and a tank of gas for this review.

Alzy - Speaking of which, why have I never seen this talked about? Cops, that is. I’ve never seen so much as a Forest Ranger in Matt’s videos. Certainly there are some California version of ‘Super Troopers’ roaming around these 4-5 roads Matt regularly “drives”? Matt is a very responsible, attentive, and professional driver out there so I’m not saying he deserves nor trying to jinx him into any tickets or whatnot, but I’m curious as to how he does it, anyone else?

Me too, The way I see it, someone in this field of engineering should be able to design an ac system small enough to cool the inside of these types of cars. And hey, why not figure out a way to take some of the cool air from the ac pump and help to introduce a new kind of "cool air" intake...seems possible but not sure if the power trade off would be beneficial.

Zatharos, in the case of a dual clutch it has a clutch pack that resembles two multi plate clutch assemblies in one. as it grabs one set it simultaneously lets go of another, allowing for shifts that are nearly seamless in power transfer. here is a short description that illustrates it well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmnEeJqJl9migKc

the best looking mclaren ever was the f1 the rest look and sound like chinese knockoffs merc is still putting 6L v12s into S classes, mclaren could easily drop in N/A v12s to their cars, but they won't because conspiracy to make all cars worse over time, think about it merc meets emissions with a 600hp v12 in the s600, a 2 ton car mclaren could super-easily meet emissions requirements because their cars are 700kg lighter and so much more aerodynamic............that's how i know its a conspiracy make everything small displacement and gay it up with some turbos and paddle shifters and electric steering you know there is a problem when an e39 540i sportwagon has better road feel than any new mclaren, i'm talking about steering feel and not lateral grip 1 wins as a track weapon, and 1 wins as a drivers car also my 2001 540i sportwagon has a 4.4l N/A v8, so by engineering principals alone it is better than ANY 3.8/4.0L TT mclaren

Great job Matt! Loved the review loved the car and it's always a pleasure seeing just how much fun you are having driving these modern works of engineering. I think you and Zack should tackle a couple of one takes together where one drives and relays his feelings and then have the other take over and conclude with their feelings. I think it could help Zack feel a bit more comfortable in front of the camera and loosen up a little bit. That being said I still think Zack does a great job but he just lacks in the animation dept that you(Matt) have in abundance. Great job to the whole smoking tire crew you guys all are fantastic and keep up doing the amazing one takes and podcasts that you do. ✌

If that is true they left too early. The pyramids still stand, while the 720S couldn't make it thorugh the press launch without problems. They should have stuck around and tought McLaren to build a car that works for more than five minutes at a time. That said: If they decided to build it properly i totally agree. I love the looks of it, the sound of it, and it's SO freaking fast.

JohnnyNr5 eh, first year of the 720s, most of these problems should be fleshed out in the next couple years or so
@jo05dk
@jo05dk 5 жыл бұрын
The first reviews of the 720S dropped in may last year if memory serves me right, so the car is at least 15 months old now. ..and this car managed one launch before acting up. McLaren is famous for building cars with all sorts of annoying issues. Instead of throwing new cars on the market every other week, killing off resale values for their customers, i think they would do a great service to the brand, and their customers, if they spend the time needed to correct the problems with their cars. Instead of people going "New McLaren ey? I'll consider it in a year or two when they, hopefully, have got the bugs fixed", it would be great if they just delivered working cars.

he mentioned them @16:00 FI boost varies by application and preference - so there is no "it's x amount faster" when you can just increase the psi (and lose some reliability). tinkering with the 720S's turbos and ECU could make it faster, as well. Regardless of how much a 720S is tuned up to make more power, the AWD lambos are always going have the edge off the line because 720 can't put down full power in the first 3 gears anyway, even in stock form. The McLaren has the edge in aero so it will pull as well or better from 100-200mph, even with significantly less horsepower.
