The Marvel Cinematic Universe so far has 26 films in its catalogue and it only keeps getting bigger... but it finally reached its first "rotten" score with Eternals. That's definitely strange, because there's worse Marvel movies out there! So today, we'll be going through the MCU and ranking its movies from Iron Man to Eternals, and deciding which films deserve a "rotten" rating.

Spiderman Far From Home is rotten but Black Widow is a tomato? What the f? Black Widow's most interesting plot points are the ones that Natasha tells Yelena about like Natasha and Clint meeting for the first time and Natasha trying to join SHIELD. Plus they butchered the antagonist. Task Master in the comics has photographic memory as a genetic trait unlike in the movie where it's just a floppy disk inserted into the back of her head. I was fine with making her a female but taking out one of the things that makes Task Master good is insulting. I don't want to insult the director/writer of the movie but they where making a movie that celebrated women empowerment and thought that instead of having the villain have their power come from themselves, they thought that the villain's power should come from a computer chip. The villain has the same problem with the live action Mulan.

The problem with using the Tomatometer is quite simple when you look at it. It's not a measure of the film's quality at all. Instead, it's how many critics hit the like button or the dislike button. Their reviews are going to be more nuanced. In some cases, I've seen a review that seems constructive - even positive - that then hit the 'Rotten' button because although they thought it was good on a technical level, they didn't like it. It's a real bad measure for judging a film.

Yep. Its super problematic. However it's useful to use if you don't have a lot of money and want to find a film that you are most likely to enjoy. If most of the critics hit the like button then I'm gonna play it safe.

I think Rotten Tomatoes itself is a decent site in collecting reviews, and the score is a broad indicator of the movie's quality, but people look only at the score and not at the actual reviews. I didn't know the critics themselves decided on if their review was put as fresh/rotten

I don’t know if RT weights the audience scores the same way as the critic scores. But at least each individual audience review isn’t divided into fresh or rotten. Instead it shows the star rating each individual viewer gave.

I see it kind of like this, the tomato meter is more less a recommendation type of thing. At the end of the day we all have preferences and that's the point. There's a lot of movies I enjoy that have rotten tomato scores, hook, The amazing Spider-Man 2, and even tron legacy. Sure those aren't "masterpieces of Cinema" However the same could also be applied to the audience score, now I know I just mentioned hook which is actually pretty great movie in my opinion, and is resting at 76% by audiences, most of the time audiences love movies because of spectacle or because of crowd pleasing moments, and that's fine but mainline critics that actually give a score are there to actually judge it story wise, and if it achieves it's acquired goal. Whether it's trying to be shocking or emotional that's kind of what they look for. (Not including hook again, I think that movie does everything just right)

I really dislike that movie, even though i loved Vol1. The comedy with Mantis is almost never funny, Drax is a bit too much in this movie and Rocket and Groot are super annoying. Rocket and Drax were my favorites in vol1.

The jokes go on for way too long in gotg 2. Taserface and the whole finding the fin joke goes on for way too long to the point its not funny anymore, the jokes in general didn't land as much as the first one and there wasn't a good balance. Im pretty sure that's because the second movie was all James gunn whereas the first one had other co-writers who were involved in some capacity as well and you can clearly tell the difference in the drop of quality.

If you want my two cents falcon and the winter soldier is worse than ant man and the wasp. Its the worst thing the mcu has ever produced. It's the anti- black panther. It tries to ask meaningful questions but In doing so it ironically undermines its own premise and then devolves into just a bunch of centrist copaganda garbage. It's the only MCU property I actively HATE. Ant man and the wasp isnt that good but at least it's forgettable and doesn't try to say something profound only to fall flat on its face.

​@@galactic85 Rspectfully disagree.The Falcon and the Winter Soldier isn't perfect by a longshot (especially with its ending and handling of some of the other themes), but I felt that it was trying to talk about race in a subdued and critical light. I think the whole Isaiah Bradley bit and that one talk between Sam and Bucky in Episode 5 are some of the best scenes in the MCU yet. I just wished the whole show was consistently great. Ant-Man and the Wasp, meanwhile, made no attempt at all to say or try anything bold. It's just that one movie that is made with the most minimum effort. It's a shame because Scott as the everyman-type of hero would have made for a compelling story, but they just made him into a stock comic relief. At first I kinda liked it, but the longer I thought about it, the more I remember cringing than laughing at the jokes.

I'm one of those people who thinks the Incredible Hulk is underrated and I will gladly die on that hill if I have to. It isn't even just the action, there's a whole lot to that movie I love. Also, the fact that someone could rate Iron Man 2 higher than the Incredible Hulk is baffling to me. Iron Man 2 was suuuuch a bad movie and a step backwards compared to the first one. It's so hard for me to get through Iron Man 2.

I largely agree with this list. I'm actually surprised that after Thor the Dark World, Ant-man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Iron Man 2 and Avengers Age of Ultron that critics decided to crucify Eternals. I'm not saying Eternals is a masterpiece but its much better than the aforementioned films.

What pissed me off about Thor: Ragnarok was that they took one of the best Hulk stories ever, Planet Hulk, and turned it into barley a subplot because the studio has no faith in The Hulk as a character. Endgame just skipped over his character development entirely, which also pissed me off.

In regards to 'Eternals', the movie which inspired this video, I think it really came down with the expectation, given the talents behind it. Critics set it on a higher bar. 'Nomadland' was my favorite film of the year, so I can't say I'm not underwhelmed that it was more middling than anything stellar, but the MCU have reached worse. Were the critics too harsh on it? Maybe, maybe not. Were the critics too generous with the franchise at times? Definitely.

I agree with everything in your list except for the fact that Incredible Hulk is rotten. Personally I think it's the second most comic-accurate Hulk we've gotten, especially with the design. It's not a masterpiece, but I wouldn't call it rotten. I prefer this Hulk over Ruffalo, and I want that version of Hulk in a World War Hulk movie adaptation because he seems more fitting

I think the thing that people miss about the RT scores is that they’re a measure of what % of people enjoyed the movie. Not how good the movie is per say. That’s why you often see Marvel movies get extremely high RT scores while still having pretty mid average scores. Most of the MCU films are made for mass appeal and don’t really challenge the genre all too much. Eternals had the first rotten score for a similar reason to a film like say Man of Steel. Not necessarily because it was bad, but because it was the first real divisive MCU film.

I almost 100% agreed and then you put Endgame as Tomato - dawg this shit is so fucking fresh tier I'm upset. I love the drama and the way we get to see what The Avengers life is post-snap. Seeing the build up of what they need to achieve was awesome and the time travel aspect was so cool to me - I felt that movie being more of a dramatized comic book while it did not have the same adventure level as Infinity War - I think it nailed how my emotions were fluctuating! But tbh I think in watching Infinity War and Endgame back to back is honestly a better movie than each separately. It's a lot more cohesive and feels much more of an epic like the extended editions of LoTR.

Civil War - the airport fight is the most pointless and lowest stake fight in the MCU and that makes it boring as fuck. Only Black Panther vs anyone and Spider-man vs anyone makes it worth re-watching. Now the final fight that is fucking awesome.

Thor is probably my 3rd favorite MCU film behind Avengers Endgame and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I don't know how to explain it, but it just has a very different feel for me, especially in the scenes in Asgard. Kenneth Branagh lent a theatrical feel to those portions that is sophisticated and subdued, but rife with depth. If that makes sense? The Earth stuff sometimes evokes that same feeling, but even when it doesn't I still love it. I just love the way Kenneth handled the film, and I think it was the first time a director was able to put their trademark feel onto an MCU movie, and we wouldn't get a moment like that again until Guardians of the Galaxy.

Personally I don’t mind Ant-Man and the Wasp because it’s an okay enough film that’s a refreshingly small scale film from the constant large-scale MCU films that has such a large scale conflict issue it starts bleeding into Eternals in Phase 4. I at least put Captain Marvel as one of my few Rotten ones alongside Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, and Dark World because this first female MCU film exists when it’s the perfect time and place to have Black Widow and instead she gets brushed aside with a Phase 4 film that’s less impactful. Also the Ohio deleted scene ending should’ve been the proper tribute ending to the film, you could’ve just added it in its amazing!

8:03 I never understood the complaint that Quicksilver shouldn't have been hit by bullets. The bullets weren't fired at HIM and he failed to dodge them. He ran TOWARD the bullets to save someone else. So he managed to push Hawkeye and girl out of the way just in time for them to be spared but instantly got hit himself. When you're saving other people sometimes there's just not enough time to also save yourself. That's what makes someone a hero.

While I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with a comedy Thor movie, I think it’s a problem when the tone undercuts the emotion of the story. Thor loses his hammer, his dad, 3 of his best friends, his eye, and his home and the whole thing feels more like a fun romp than an inspiring journey of seeing a person strengthened by the experience of enduring loss.

I agreed with the large majority of your ratings expect for hulk. My nostalgia puts it at a solid tomato. Also shang chi for me is like either a low fresh or a really high tomato because they didn’t really do enough with the sister nor gave her closure from wenwu despite them clearly not having a good relationship to the point were he couldn’t stand looking at her because she reminded him to much of his wife. If it did more with her then the film could have been easily been like top 5 in the mcu. That’s just me though.

I'm curious, are they better or worse? Personally, I would say Dr. Strange is better, but Stephen's appearances in future MCU movies kind of change his personality, which makes the movie worst in retrospect. But then again I could say the exact same thing about his magic lmao

@@truckdriver2129 The Black Widow movie is towards the bottom of my list - I didn't enjoy it other than being introduced to Pugh's character. And I loved the first Dr. Strange SO MUCH (it's one my favs from all the origin movies) - I agree, it's such a shame that inconsistent character writing in the future now colours the film - but I still love it on its own.

I don't agree on putting _Ant-Man and the Wasp_ in the Rotten Score rating considering I enjoyed this and Ant-Man far more than the first two Thor films, Incredible Hulk and especially Iron Man 2. In fact, I say those films (Captain Marvel, the first two Thor films, Incredible Hulk) should receive a Mixed/Rotten Score IMHO, especially Iron Man 2.

Lol your Ant-Man takes are so based. Both movies are way better than you're giving it credit for. The story of Scott trying to be a better person for his daughter is awesome. Both movies had pretty good action and both attempted to be a little deeper than. Some of the other MCU movies. They failed but damn they tried. Lol not sure what you have against Payton Reed but he did a pretty good job. Also, GoG 2 was better overall but only because part 1 was so good as a reference point.

Oooooh, now, y'see. I'm a big Antman fan. It's probably my favourite because of how it talks about parenthood - and its the continuation of that theme that makes parts of Antman & The Wasp work for me too (not to the same degree.) Spiderman Far From Home is my least favourite for sure and my only other rotten rankings would be Age of Ultron and Incredible Hulk. This was a fun video. Hope you can continue this after the next "phase".

For me most MCU films actually don't deserve to be certified Fresh on RT. Most of them are because they all have comedy, fan service, and have fun in it. But most of them lack interesting stories, good villains or great character development. Guardians for me it's just fun, it lacks a good story, the villain is terrible. The Avengers for me it's the overrated super hero film of all time, it's just fun it's not a great film. It doesn't have good character development, it doesn't have a good story, the villains are garbage, it's all a big CGI mess in the third act, but it's so loved because it's the first time The Avengers appear on screen. Never underestimate the power of fan service. Great super hero films have great stories, conflict, real characters, they are great as stand alone films not just super hero films, like The Dark knight, Logan, Spider Man 2. The MCU has made the bar very low for super hero films.

What you said about not expecting action rings true: when people tell me Jessica Jones is "boring" they are missing the whole point of the show (and not appreciating David Tenant enough). Hopefully some day they make a Howard the Duck movie and when they do, they don't shoehorn dumb action scenes into it, when that isn't Howard's style.

Okay, I need to say this. I really think that Spider-Man Far from Home is actually really good. I completely understand the cons, and I understand that’s it’s not exactly what people want from a Spider-Man movie, but does it need to be? I think people misunderstand why there’s so much Iron Man in that movie. This is a Peter got snapped away and lost for 5 years, and when he returns he loses on of the only father figures he had (Tony). There’s a deep pressure on him to try to live up to Tony, but the movie is about him accepting that and becoming his own hero. To be honest, to me that’s such a good Spider-Man plot. Sure, it was done better in Homecoming, but I think it’s definitely more visually interesting in FFH. Also, the last fight scene is just peak, and Mysterio is one of the best villains in the MCU in my opinion. Sorry for writing a freaking essay, I just wanted to maybe shine a new light on this movie. If you still hate it, totally cool. I think it rocks tho

I personally put the first two thor films in rotten because I found both very boring with bad pacing and not a good story. I would put Ragnarok in fresh because of how much it expanded the universe with great characters and made hulk powerful. Endgame is fresh as well because it's a superhero movie that was build up all these years and it's character driven at times instead of plot driven. Shang chi is tomato because it falls apart in the third act. Eternals is rotten because boring, visually dim and de saturated, questionable character motivations. FFH is tomato because great acting from Gyllenhaal and holland. It dives deep into spider man struggles
