In fairness, "Herlock Sholmes" has a backstory. Maurice LeBlanc, the guy who wrote the Arsene Lupin novels, wanted Arsene to match wits against Sherlock in his own novels but couldn't use the character because of copyright issues with the estate of Arthur Conan Doyle. So he switched one letter in Sherlock's name and sent it out to the presses. GAA's localization ran into similar rights problems with the name and followed the Leblanc's lead. The things you learn from playing Persona 5.

Auchi's name has a lot more relevance and more puns than just "Ouch", since it's the same name as he has in Japanese. Example for a pun is his first name Taketsuchi or 武土 which is extremely similar to the word bushi which mean samurai 武士, and Bullet from the first case makes a joke about that in the English version. Also his family name 亜内 (Auchi) means "in Asia" and he has the first character of his name on his clothes. Also he's the ancestor of the Paynes in the main series. Their family name in the Japanese version is also "Auchi" and since it sounded like "Ouch" they translated it to "Payne" because it sounds like "Pain"

For Nikolina Pavlolva, "Pavlov" is also the name of a Russian psychologist who worked with dogs, as Nikolina's cat is a big part of her character. Also, "Gilded = rich" is really not getting into the specifics of a great name. "Gilded" specifically refers to covering something with gold. The "gilded age," which took place in the United States while TGAA takes place, is called such because while the poor became poorer the rich became richer than ever. Just as Magnus uses his wealth to cover for his character, something being "gilded" has the outward appearance of wealth covering up something much worse.

I've always been so terrible at seeing the puns in character names, so thank you for this. I didn't realize this game would have so many characters from the Sherlock Holmes novels!
@HHog
@HHog 2 жыл бұрын
I was baffled when I learned that Lestrade was an actual name from the Holmes novels, and not a pun on a "(something)-less/lous trade". If they'd named her Penny, it could have been a pun on a "Penniless Trade", i.e. pickpocketing, a trade you're in when you're penniless. Or if the character had been male, then "Perry Lestrade" could have meant a "Perilous Trade".

Rynosuke = Basically Phoenix's original Japanese first name except the last kanji letter is changed, Naruhodo = A phrase in japan that usually translates to "I see."
@randomhobothatyouwalkedpas2839

Although you are absolutely right about the Family name/surname the first name is actually different. Phoenix’s name in Japan is Ryuichi. To further add to that Rynosuke’s name was supposedly the first name that the devs thought of and it just stuck. You are correct in that there was a change in the name. The name itself is the same, but they changed a Kanji character to a Katakana character. It went from 龍之介 to 龍ノ介. This was to make the name stand out as part of it wasn’t written using Kanji which is not very common as far as I’m aware. (Apologies if this came off as rude at all).
