Wow. Just wow! I have seen "Du bist dran" on Duolingo for years now and didn't understand how that could mean "It's your turn." NOW I understand that 'dran/daran' is replacing a thing that you are referring to specifically. "You are 'in the row/queue.' Thanks so much for this!

What is unbelievable is, these explanations cannot be found in course books, dictionaries or similar. On the contrary, for English, you can find many sources to learn these type of details in the language, like the Longman language activator. Germans are very self-preserving to teach their language through normal learning channels and leave the place for these content creators. If it is good or bad, a topic open to discussion.

So....to summarize: 1) dran is a contraction of daran and they can often be used interchangeably, 2) but in some fixed expressions, only dran can be used, not because of any set rule, but rather because of idiomatic convention (common usage).

Liebe Anja, ich hab' vor kurzem so was gelesen (das waren Informationen um Wetter in Deutschland): Nach der Hitze kommt der Rumms! Könntest du vielleicht erklären, was das bedeutet. Ich konnte dieses Wort "der Rumms" niergendwo finden, dh. in keinem Wörterbuch, oder zum Beispiel: "erst hui, dann pfui". Ich lerne Deutsch so lang und ab und zu erlebe ich solche Überraschungen. 😅
