Rewatching old MEC videos, just got 2 more 600's a couple weeks ago. Need a few parts but I'll be cranking out .410, 28, 20 & 12 eventually. Good vid. Mike.

I believe once you start making them you will see why people load them over just going out and buying them, It really isn't a cost thing. performance quality can be had for a reasonable price.

Thank Buddy. I would like to get one of your overshot card makers. I thought about what I said and realized that you were the guy who made them. That wasn't intentional. The overshot card maker is a little spendy for me right now, However, I would like to get one in the future. I didn't mean to torpedo a product you make. Dave.

Pssssh, Davey, you never need to apologize for telling people what you think about something. I critique tools and firearms all the time; you're doing yourself and your viewers a disservice if you don't call it like you see it.

Willie. It takes more than seeing someone with your eyes in your head, I believe that our craft is a needed thing for guys like us. It a mental relief valve. It's more than shooting, it's more than making thousands of rounds. or a ton of bullets or shot for that shotgun. It's the place where we as people (Like that good book says) We need to clean our House, sort out the trash and get rid of it, sweep up the remains of what we never bother to pick up and throw out, Make the floor clean again so we can walk without catching our toe, put things in order and back in their places so we have order once again. loading is a worthwhile thing that we do to maintain our health. To keep that "LIFE" down inside healthy. we can live a Life, But do we Have (LIFE) doing it? I don' just say kind words just to say them, I believe them and want those words to be who I am. Peace out, Keep doing what you are doing and don't worry about things. Keep that inside thing going Bro. Dave.

Cost savings is nice... but some people will never understand the whole performance round over cost. I'd rather have something that will consistently bust clays and kill birds than save a couple cents per round. I can do that for about the same cost as those cheap Walmart rounds. Very nice video. I'd love to see the shot maker you've got.

Awesome video, Dave. I've never seen a 650N in action before. Very impressed. Hey, look for once fired STS, Gun Clubs and WAA hulls lying on the ground at the range. A lot of guys don't reload and will just leave them there. Hope that the oral surgery goes well for you today.

Hey Steve, Thanks, Ugh I have been dealing with tooth disorders, The oral surgeon and I have a date soon, I can't wait. I just want this to be a memory.. Discomfort and not being able to sleep soundly, eating soft foods and just putting up with it is a trial. That's what I have been dealing with and it has been one thing after another. They come in threes is what they say. anyway, I like the 650N, I wish it was old school and the dies were made out of metal instead of engineered plastic. It doesn't really matter, the shells are plastic and what gain does it have at the end of the day? Zero. So good shooting to ya. Dave.

Well I bought one of these presses from a guy and tried it out tonight. But mine doesn't not throw powder and lead. It must not be pressure sensitive like yours is because I made a mess. Every time I pulled that lever the press threw both powder and shot whether or not there was a shell in the slot or not.

Great video Dave nice press and yes I also have been watching Russian video on shot making it’s sad on the equipment they use in order to make shot but it works great I’m looking forward to see your shot setup when you get comfortable I have to hit the trap range if not this weekend maybe next weekend I have 350 of 7/8 ounce I load them up that light to stretch out my shot also 1-1/8 is for men I’m to week lol 😂 for slugs I don’t mind I use a padding on my shoulder but for trap is to uncomfortable have a wonderful evening

Once you have the shot maker stepping up your loadings with 1 oz to 1 1/8 oz loads will increase your hit ability in the game of trap. the more you have of a swarm of pellets in the air is the thing. and having the shotmaker will increase your volume of loads to practice with. I, like you, started with 7/8 th oz loads and I found that I was handicapping myself for no reason, I hate seeing clay targets hit the ground just to break because I either missed or the shot swarm wasn't up to the job. increasing the payload was the answer. there are butt pads in all kinds of material out there now and that is something you could look into. they have slip-on pads as well, they don't look as appealing, however, they work, so that is another option you have.

Looking forward to seeing your shot maker ,$48+ for a bag of shot is a bit much. Have you compared the pattern between your loads and commercial loads? Just curious if they are different.
@Thorsaxe777
@Thorsaxe777 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't got around to that yet. one thing I have done is shot the commercial loads in a round of trap, I'm no expert as I'm still learning my game, However, I saw no difference that was positive with shooting the new stuff over my homemade stuff. I believe that it's a thing to do with the chokes that they have these days. The swarm of shot needs to be evenly dispersed and uniform roundness aids in doing such, However to a degree. The main thing is to attend the informal shoots and develop skill in trap shooting. Having the shotmaker makes it affordable to do it. #8 shot is a standard in clay-busting and it is also how much shot is in the swarm once the shot is in the air also. using performance wads make a huge difference as well.

Very nice press👍🏻. I’ve been looking for a 600jr. On Craigslist but haven’t found any close by. Also the Remington game loads and heavy dove use a solid one piece hull and aren’t as expensive👍🏻🇺🇸

Cool, I would get a 600 jr, it will load quality loadings and it is made well. I buy my hulls by the thousand at BPI, That was one thing I wanted to do right off the bat, I wanted to have a quantity of the same hulls and the "Gun Club" hulls were one of them that everyone was talking about, I followed a Thread on Shotgun world and someone said, "I got Mine, But BPI has Gun Club hulls once fired in stock. I bought a K 10 minutes later, The next day they were sold out. Same with Remington STS Hulls as well. Buy'em when you can get them. otherwise, they will sell out on the same day., anyway, Thanks, I enjoy this more than I thought I would. shot making is a challenge as well but rewarding. Peace to you Brother, Dave.

Thanks for a very informative video. I am just getting into shot gun reloading (Son and Granddaughter have shown an interest). I also have ordered a shot maker, its not here yet. I did not know what to get when it came to presses. I need to load 12, 16, and 20 gauge. I looked at Dillon because thats what I use for metallic cartridges (650) but I found it does not support 16 gauge and the caliber changes are around 300$ each. I picked up 3 of the cheep Lee load all, they work but are all plastic. The press you are using I did a search for and Midway has it but it says there are no caliber conversions for it. So does a person need to buy a press in each caliber or does it only do 12 gauge? Sorry for all the questions. I will be watching for your videos on the shot maker, I am not above stealing good ideas!
@Thorsaxe777
@Thorsaxe777 6 жыл бұрын
The cheapest way to go is the Lee Load-all. If you do get into the MEC units they are caliber specific. It is something you should look at before going out and off the deep end on. From what I understand 28 ga. is pricey, the more common the ga. being loaded, the less it will cost you. Not too many people do 28 ga. for that reason and is a sport into all it's own. I would look at the MEC Jr 600 series, these will load an afternoon of trap and are quite a bit less than the 650N unit. I went with 12 ga. because it is the most common to load for. 20 ga. is next. That would be a great starter caliber for teaching the sport to youths. In the way of the Shotmaker. I'm still learning the "How too" that is not explained in the Manual, Just like will all loading equipment we need to work out with it a few times before we really know what we are doing with it. Shotmaking can be done with elaborate equipment or simple homemade stuff found at a rummage sale and a trip to Harbor Freight. which shotmaker did you go with?

I went with the Oasis Lead Shot Maker. I ordered it on ebay. Had good reviews and I watched a lot of videos. I need 16 gauge because I was at my Sons house a couple weeks ago and he was shooting some clays. A friend had good thrower and he saw me coming home early from a event and he called me to say come on over. He had picked up my shotguns the day before I had purchased the single shot 20 gauge for my Grand daughter (I like starting a new person especially a child with a single shot) and he picked up my OLD 16 gauge bolt action. I purchased it around 30 years ago from a pawn shop for 40$. Its a good shooter and he was just going crazy over shooting it again. I had some (100 rounds) of 16 gauge ammo I have saved and he was so happy so I asked him if he would like it. You would have thought I gave him a million dollars. My sin works hard runs 2 of our businesses and has a son with Autism so he does not get to have to much "fun" I told him go ahead and shoot it I will worry about getting more ammo for him. I had purchased the Lee Load all for 12 gauge a few years ago and then got busy with other things but the 2 new ones I just purchased. I was looked at the JR Mec, they are only 200$ I just feel like the load all is going to break when I put the pressure on it to crimp. The Dillon is 1100$ and I would have purchased that if it would have supported the 16 gauge (go with what you know I guess). If I understand the press you have is a progressive and the JR is a manual press for one shell at a time? I think I could live with that. Do you know if the JR has caliber conversions or is it just one press for each caliber? Thank for you time helping a new guy!

That is the next video on the menu., I have a sieve on order to screen the shot to size. I may need to get a slightly bigger one to sort out the bigger stuff, that will make it go faster as the bigger stuff will be caught before final screening. Most guys shoot it as is because lots of people use reclaimed shot that is a mixture of #7 through #9. They bust clays with it all day long. the shotmaker is a simple device and can be made at home as a "nothing fancy" piece of equipment, a simple cast iron frying pan with the right hole size drilled in it and a stump burner is all you need to make shot. Make a tilt feature with bolts sticking out the sides of the pan suspended by lag bolts attached to a base, a little ramp for the shot to run down into the coolant and you got it. anyway. I will be doing a vid on shot making followed up with the screening process and graphite coating. Thank you, Harry, I can't express how much you have helped me out with our project. Dave.

but have you actually patterned your loads compared to the load you buy at the same cost? Not being a smart-ass and legitimate question
@Thorsaxe777
@Thorsaxe777 4 жыл бұрын
No, you're not being a smart ass, actually, my loading outshoots the store-bought stuff. I have the advantage of selecting premium wads and consistent powder throws, using load data that professional shotgunners use. my shot patterns with the best produced, you have to figure, how round is shot when it goes through your choke, shot performance has little to do with shot roundness and more to do with barrel quality. Thanks for watching- Dave
