There's a few issues: (1) If an original part, that has probably been engineered and hardened, if it breaks, what are the prospects of some random piece of steel of unknown origin and unknown strength gonna be? (2) The spline teeth and their taper are probably of a slightly different profile than its mating part. It may not fit at all, or if too loose, it may strip out or wear out quickly. This replacement part may wear out or break in just a few months, with possibly disastrous consequences.
