Excuse my ignorance What makes a harbor a harbor? What's the difference between an island? 🏝️
@maheshdocherla2 ай бұрын
@tagaway6173 The harbor is part of the island. The larger the harbor and the deeper it is near the shore, the larger the vessels that it can accomodate without the larger ships getting grounded. For example, if you go to any normal coastline and wade into the sea, you will be able to walk some distance and suddenly, your feet will lose ground. That is the Continental Shelf and that gradually gets deeper to touch the sea or ocean floor. So, large ships cannot approach the shore if the depth is inadequate or dangerous due to reefs. That is why, you see in movies that the ship is anchored a long way away and people come to shore via boats. But, if the depth is good right near the shore, then it is logistically very convenient and it is also easier to guard the ships from the shore. Some, harbors have an additional advantage. For example, Pearl harbour, where the land runs around in a semi-circle on either side and the ends approach one another making the entrance to the harbour a small one. So, it has a defensive advantage in that guns can be placed on top of the jutting ends and ships have to enter the harbour in an orderly manner. That is why, one of the main fears at the time was regarding a submarine attack but since the Japanese did not have subs, they went for an air attack since their navy could not enter the harbour.

Except for the naval power of Algeria (sarcasm), the UK and then NATO have had total control of the Med since Trafalgar, except for about1939- 1943. I don't see how this is a big change Right Wing parties' culture wars aside, the EU needs LEGAL immigration to slow impending demographic collapse. Moving a naval base doesn't really help with this, immigration reform and culture changes are needed

I'm not convinced it will be of any strategic significance. Most of the potential geopolitical turmoil happens in the east as you mentioned. Those countries are the most valuable strategic players that need to be drawn to our side if they aren't already. The pipelines are going to be laid out trouwhout the whole Mediterranean so why would one place be of any importance? You need to protect them via satellites or something. As of any value for illegal migrants, they overwhelmingly land in Italy and Greece, and you need to block them from north-african countries to be effective. Once the migrants are on the sea, there is not much one can do to dissuade or block them without violating human rights. Effective strategies for prosperity in Africa is needed so they don't leave their countries in the first place.
