A Memory Palace is an imaginary location in your mind where you can store mental images to remember facts, strings of numbers, shopping lists or all kinds of things. It's hugely popular among memory champions.

The memory palace is a technique to remember facts, numbers or other things, like a shopping list. It has been around since ancient times and is also known as the Method of Loci. Memory Champion Marwin Wallonius used it to remember, in just 30 minutes, the correct order of 5040 binary digits or a complete deck of 52 cards in just 33 seconds. Here is how it works.
Close your eyes and imagine some sort of familiar physical space, like your house, school or office, and then add a mental image of the thing you want to remember. To remember a bunch of things you can use different rooms and visualize how you would walk through that space following the same specific route. As you walk through, place the things you want to remember at specific locations. Ideally, imagining things in a funny or crazy way also helps to remember. Once we have placed all the items that we want to remember our memory palace is complete.
The day we return to our palace and want to remember what's inside it, we have to go back in. We have to concentrate and imagine opening the door and walking our route. Once we pass by the specific location that we used to place our things, the item will pop back into our mind Let's try to remember 7 ingredients to make some pancakes.
You open the door and see a full cup of flour next to some shoes. Strange.
You walk into the bedroom. Inside your bed, sleeps a teaspoonful of baking powder.
In the living room sits a massive egg watching TV.
And on top of the TV is a cup of milk, almost full.
You go to into the kitchen and see 6 teaspoons dancing around a bottle of vegetable oil.
Enough. You leave the house and enter the garden. But it's full of sugar canes and in the middle, a teaspoon dressed like a gardener. What going on?
You turn around to check the bathroom. The only thing left is half a teaspoon and salt.
Now try yourself! Close your eyes and think of a familiar place such as your home. We will now slowly list 7 numbers. As you walk through your space, place each one in a different location. Lets go: 3, 14, 1, 5, 9, 2, 6

Tip: you don’t have to picture walking through the palace as that can sometimes be difficult, instead try focusing more on the image of whichever item in the palace you’ve chosen. Then incorporate what you are trying to remember to that particular image.

Thanks! I am using this method to learn a foreign language. It works, but (for me) it can take 5-10 minutes to construct an effective image for a word or phrase. Another problem I am struggling with is how to keep everything in a single building. For example, to memorize the word for "Nurse" I added a hospital to my memory palace. To memorize "Airplane" I added an airport! My memory palace map is starting to look like Sim City!

Thanks for the fun and informative video about memory palaces. I have hundreds that I use for different purposes. I've used houses, apartments, and dorms I've lived in, schools, parks, neighborhoods, workplaces, and even movies and TV episodes as memory palaces. I used them to memorize Pi to about 5,600 places, and have used them in the Long-Term Memory events of the USA Memory Championship, which I've competed in 4 times, finishing as high as 3rd place in this year's competition.

Number three was hanging up next to my paintings, numbers 1 and 4 were cuddling n my futon, number 1 was sitting on my tv, number 5 was lying holding my cat, number 9 was doing its makeup, number 2 was trying to punch a whole in the wall, and number six was reading a book. The World Memory Championships started in the early 1990s, and those contestants were using memory palaces primarily. Memory Palaces (also called the Method of Loci) were used by the ancient Greeks, and other civilizations, several thousand years ago to memorize speeches and religious texts, and pretty much anything.

I couldn't decide on a building type location, and so the body is a palace.

Damn this actually works. I used my house...remembered the ingredients and numbers when i tried to write them directly after but went to take a call and came back 5 min later to try again. I recalled all the #s right and all the ingredients save for I put 1 t baking soda, 1/4 t salt and it was baking powder, 1/2 t salt. It's best to use a place you are extremely familiar with like your home or work. I used objects in rooms that reminded me of the thing to remember ie 3 hooks in entry, 14 books on shelf, 1 bed in my room, 5 jars on vanity, 9 bottles in shower, 2 pieces furniture in another bedroom, 6 pieces furniture all around living room. They may or may not correspond w/ actual items but I found it helps to be in the vicinity (I do have 3 hooks but I have more than 14 books however it was a large # so I was able to associate it quickly). Pretty cool technique as I wouldn't have been able to remember all the ingredients and numbers otherwise. I could still recite them now! Amazing!

3,14,1,5,9,2,6. I hope thats right. I made very crazy images in my mind which helped. Memory palace is very good. The more you train it, the faster you can do it. I often have to put numbers from one file to other so this helps me remember it without having to cbeck the number several times. It also trains my brain so it has benefits. I recommend this also for school to remember dates or pieces of information. It takes time to master it tho

As someone on the autistic spectrum I would like to point out that it’s much easier to concentrate and take information on board when not being bombarded with other stimuli. So for example the background music in this video competes with the narration, making it much harder to focus on the main message. (I appreciate that this is not everyone’s problem, but I would never play music whilst teaching, it just doesn’t feel like it will conducive to focus.)

As a person with aphantasia, I can't tell if this actually works or if people are just trolling. nvm: Even if you have aphantasia it still works but thinking of abstract things like the number two in a certain room will not work. You need to make a story where there are 3 objects and only three objects there for some specific reason.

I still don't understand why tf you need such a complex technique. Why do I have to imagine so many things? For me, I feel like memorizing something just by saying it out loud a few times is far easier. When you were saying the numbers, I was assigning those numbers to different objects in the house, but then while recalling them, I remembered the objects that I assigned the numbers to, but forgot which number I assigned to them. First time thoughts: Pretty useless and inefficient way to memorize. I have never used this technique before, yet I have always been a topper in my class. But I can't judge something without digging deeper.

This is only possible for single words not theories or doctrines. I am trying to memorise as much as I can for a legal exam. Does anybody have any tips apart from using Anki?

Then i go into the living room to see my 1 dog and some photos mine with the number 14 and a photo of my whole family (we are 5 in total). then finally i return to my desk and see the fan with a weird nine engraved on it.

Mainly things with wheels Lmfao mine was way crazier and stupider: first there was a 3 stuck in the toilet drowning, then there was a 14 on top of my 14 year old sister reading r/I’m14andthisisdeep then there was a 1 dancing on top of the table to “sOmEbOdY cOmE gEdDuR sHe’S dAnCin LiKE a StrEePEeR” and a 5 throwing money at the 1 then a 9 sleeping on the couch while some cats were eating it for some reason idk then a 2 controlling a too too train and it runs over you then BOOM everything goes black and there’s a black screen with w a s t e d and a 666 in the bottom. (for the number 6).

I open the school door and go to the canteen with two other friends. We buy 3 apple juices (one for each). We go up to the library, where both my friends go to find seven books each, totalling 14 books. i go up another flight of stairs and see the best student of our class: ie: the number 1 student. I then go to the classroom, high 5'ing one of my friends, enter my classroom and the teacher gives me my exam paper where I scored 9 out of ten. i go to the next classroom, where a friend offers me a tootsie roll (tootsie has 2 in it) and in the next room I see tekashi 6ixnine throwing a party

How can i use this technique with more complex subjects... As for example Medicine? I've used with simpler, less complex things. Grosseries, phone numbers, etc. It would be usefull to try this with a college textbook? Sorry for my english. Self taught. Feel free to correct me.

+Alejandro Restrepo to be honest I’m not sure. Technically you can, but I’m not sure how useful it will be as the chunks of information you attach to each room are pretty small. But why don’t you give it a try and tell us later if it worked.
