All these years later, I still have the Twiki action figure that I bought as a 10 year old kid. After I grew up, he took up a station on the shelf over my work bench. He shares his guard duty with a Muffit II action figure and V.I.N.CENT figure, also preserved from my childhood. All three have stood a 40 year vigil over my hobby space.

My memories of Buck Rogers is mostly women in spandex. However, one of my favorite Twiki moments was when they were somewhere cold, and Twiki says "Bidi bidi bidi, I'm freezing my ball bearings off." Damn, that was comic gold!

This and Battlestar were great shows for kids who craved more sci-fi action after seeing Star Wars. I remember Twiki for three reasons. 1. His name sounded like Twinkies (which I loved as a kid) 2. His voice was pretty deep for a small robot (as if that's not a crazy observation) and 3. He was a robot with a bowel cut.

A big fan of Buck Rogers and watched every week. Always had a crush on Erin Gray and wanted to be her co-pilot. I really liked Twiki and enjoyed listening to Mel Blanc do the voice. I remember one of the episodes with Gary Coleman where he sent a puzzle box full of riddles to Dr. Huer's desk and they could not figure out how it got there or who was responsible. They feared the worse and thought there was going to be an attack. What I liked about this episode was them not knowing until close to the end of the episode that it was Gary Coleman's character that was responsible. I cannot remember for sure but I thought it ended up Coleman's character was doing it for Bucks birthday or something like that. Been so long I cannot remember the specific details but I really like that episode. Thanks for posting Dave. Can't go wrong with Buck Roger's.

R.I.P. Mel Blanc. I took me until adulthood to get the "joke" that Mel voiced Bugs and Twiki, and both there catch phrases start with "What's up......?" not to mention how similar Doc and Buck could sound when said right. I also had a friend who had what was essentially a plastic Twiki ball on attached to an RC car. But it was life size! how could I not be jealous of that!?

HahA! Twiki was hilarious. Loved his scenes with Buck, and often stole the scene with his one-liners. One of my favourite sci-fi shows of the 70s., but that second season was a little sub-par. Having said that, the second season often gets a bad rap, but there were a couple good episodes in there. There were so many great episodes in the first season...loved the ones with Princess Ardala, the one with the original Buck himself, Buster Crabbe, Dorothy Stratten (tragic death and died far too young), and the Space Vampire. Great memories! Thanks for posting.

Yep, Rometiklan. I do agree that there were a couple of decent episodes during season two. Still, I never understood why they felt compelled to revamp the show so dramatically. I also agree that the guest stars during season one really made the show special.

With everyone sick from eating poisoned food, the Earth Defense forces must rely on a ragtag crew to defend the planet when Jack Palance's troops come in to attack. Twiki was definitely a great character in Buck Rogers, one of my favorite short-lived shows from my youth. I still have my Twiki figure from back then. The AI Dr. Theopoulis (sp?) is a sticker that covers the screw hole in the chest of the figure. I have to go downstairs and find it now, if I can locate it, and put it on my desk here . . . Felix had what had to be a very uncomfortable costume come to life and make it look believable onscreen - it couldn't have been easy to see out of that facemask. Glad he got a lot of work in his day, work which is remembered fondly by millions.

Where Buck communicated with one female character in sign language (the bad guys didn’t think she could communicate) and also found the heavy machine gun that the bad guys did not recognize as a formidable weapon. There’s a bunch of other episodes I liked, but that’s one that comes to mind. I agree that the first season was more likable with regards to the characters and camaraderie.

I remember seeing Felix Silla in the action film The Black Samurai with Fred Williamson. He played a little guy who interrupts Williamson’s home Kung Fu workout, aiming a gun at him and saying that he and his friends like watching him before Williamson beats them up. Twiki did have one moment on Buck Rogers when he was piloting a fighter with Theo. He fires at an attacking fighter and makes a direct hit. “Eat lead,” Twiki said. Theo was quick to say “Lead?” Twiki and Theo were definitely two minds on many things. The second season’s best feature was the character of Hawk(he was a cool, tragically lonely being)and his Bird of Prey fighter. And while I like the actor Wilfred Hyde-White, his character seemed to slow things down. And when Mel Blanc was out for a while, the actor who voiced Twiki sounded enthusiastically dull. Robots, Droids, Mechanical men or Cybernetic units, they serve a purpose. May Felix Silla Rest In Peace.

I agree completely. Twiki was my favorite little ambuquad back then in the first season. Felix Silla was always a treat when he put on the suit. Of course it was the legendary and immortal Mel Blanc who originally came up with the voice of Twiki. As short as he was, his comic hilarity sure made the show. Where would Buck be without his partner? And of course with little Twiki, always was Dr. Theopolis (Theo to many).

When this show was on, I was just a kid, with an 8:00 bedtime. Well, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, my mom worked 2nd shift at the hospital, so my dad took care of us. (This was in the 1970's, when dads taking care of kids was unheard of). Anyway, since mom was at work, and Buck Rogers came on at my bedtime, my dad and I made a deal. He said, "Okay, you can watch the show, You can't play with your toys. And when the show is over, you'll go right to bed without a fight. And that's what we did the whole time the show was on. Dad sat on the floor, and I reclined into him, like one of those chair-like pillows. And neither of us moved, until the last commercial, when I had to brush my teeth in time to see the last scene. We kept that secret from my mom for years. He and I was space fans. I remember when we went to see the very first Star Wars movie in 1977.

Twiki was a little bit of a fighter, actually. He commandeered a starfighter in at least two episodes of the first season. He also managed to get in a few shots here and there with enemies. But I think what was really the best about him was the fact he was the "comic relief" of the show. From the comical "BT BT BT" right down to the comical one-liners he was always throwing out at Dr. Huer and Wilma all the time, he was by far the best little ambuquad of the series. And I don't even wanna talk about what they did to him in the 2nd season, it was a crying shame.

BEEDEE BEEDEE What's Up Buck? Mister Roboto (1983 KILLROY WAS HERE StYx) was like a creepy homage to Our Buddy (Before Buddy was a dirty word that is) Twiki.

I don't know when this video came out but I hope Felix is still alive and kicking. I also remember Felix being in the Jim Kelly (Black Belt Jones) movie called Black Samurai which was a martial arts movie towards the end of the black exploitation era. But I thought he was a cool sidekick because I was impressed by Felix's Mobility in his costume compared to Anthony Daniels who played C-3PO, he was able to run pretty fast.

Loved this show! And actually, when anyone mentions it, the first memory that comes to mind is Twiki's "bedebedebede what's up Buck"...lol. Hey Dave, have you done anything on "Space 1999"? The intro was energetic and the show rocked! I even wanted one of those toy ships but never did get one. :( Anyway, thanks again for the awesome content Dave!

Another great & informative video. I had always wondered who played the little robot, but never got around to looking him up. Like you, I loved the first season but I wasn’t as loyal as you, bc the second season sorta turned me off of BR. There were other shows that had caught my interest. Anyway, thanks again, David...another great 👍 video! (are you going to do another Q & A type show or a synopsis of your favorites, not so favorites, & those that were always asking the question “ how did that EVER make it to the airwaves?”)

Thanks Alaina! Hmmm...there are a lot of videos that I want to make. I've been thinking about doing a live stream Q&A type thing...but I've got to figure out the tech first. Maybe, I'll just have folks post questions on the community section of my channel. More to come.

In the 90s, I worked with Felix for 3 weeks on a TV commercial shot in Phoenix. Felix was absolutely hysterical, and made working this production so much fun! He's retired now, and living in Vegas. Here's his site: felixsilla.com

Muffet had nothing to due with the cancellation of the original Battlestar Galactica. In fact it was still popular when it ended. The reason it was canceled was $. Mainly due to the special effects
@jdsundstrom
@jdsundstrom 6 жыл бұрын
True points, Tom. I never meant to infer that Muffet led to the demise of BG. I just think that there was an opportunity for a different type of friendly robot on the show. And, yes, you are correct. Ratings weren't horrible. They were not spectacular enough for the network execs to greenlight a second season of the show due to the extremely high cost of the special effects. Great comment, my friend. I truly appreciate you adding to the conversation.

Great video, Dave! And like other commenters here I never really noticed the resemblance to Giant Robot. How about some vids on other staples of tokusatsu television like Ultraman and The Space Giants? Regarding the unfortunate demise of "Buck Rogers..." all I can offer is the following. Season one - spandex. Season two - no spandex. Any questions?
