The whole high-concept horror/thriller is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, you’ve got yourself a fantastic idea that audiences will be curious of. An idea that could make a fantastic movie. But on the other, you’ve got a fantastic idea that audiences will be curious of, an idea that could make a good movie.. a lot of times it doesn’t
A lot of times movies fail to live up to the promise of their own premise.
And when that happens, I get very sad.
Mark Mylod's 2022 Dark Horror Comedy Thriller is a damn near close to masterpiece in my opinion. Maybe the most fun I had at the movies in 2022. Let's talk about the filmmaking techniques it employs that makes it so.

I haven't heard of this movie, but given you said it's a high-concept movie that DOESN'T stumble on itself already makes me want to watch it!

These comments are so weird. It seems like a sci-fi movie where everyone agrees on something completely wrong and different. This movie had so much potential. And it just went flat and flavorless. It’s a solid 4/10imbd

I definitely agree with you. horror films especially suffer from an interesting premise, that eventually fails to deliver. The menu was such a great surprise. I on impulse went and saw it without knowing anything about it besides its genre. The chapter based story telling was a fantastic way to maintain suspense and question what was going to happen next. Nice video!

I love this movie because the concept transcends just food. It applies to almost any field with top of the line elitism/commentary that makes the field itself forgets its essence.

I recently started a subscription program at my local theater. I have seen this movie as well as multiple others within the past few months. I didn't see much of any promotion for this movie, but enjoyed it nonetheless. This has been one of the few films in the past few years where I didn't know what was going to be behind the next door, which is terrifying. It truly baffles me how modern cinema leaves movies and theaters for a week or 2 and then pulls them. I enjoyed this film even if it wasn't great.

@@cutaway yes! I know amc has something similar. My theatre is about 14 screening rooms. It's quite a nice theatre for being in a not that nice area. I recommend the cheeto popcorn

Watched this film in theatres last week with a friend, and we were stunned at how good it was. Easily the most fun I've had this year in theatres. One example of a film not living up to the premise was the latest Matrix film, which I watched with the same friend. I liked the first 20-30 minutes and was intrigued by the direction it was going, and then it all sagged like an undercooked soufflé, and i don't even remember anything past that 30 minute mark (where he fights with his therapist through a mirror). Shame. Excellent analysis! New like and subscribe from me.

The Menu was a interesting film but with a so/so ending. When I watched the trailer for this, my initial thoughts were that this is going to be about cannibalism. But nope, just a psychological thriller with food and comedic bits here and there.

@@cutaway It was so/so for me because everyone except for the girl did not get to escape, and i found the arson scene quite disturbing. However, I am glad Margot get to enjoy her burger. I also found the name of her date’s dish to be funny, as a sidenote.

The "horror" label being attached to this film is misleading. Suspense, thriller, mystery, black comedy, arthouse... yes. Horror, barely. If movies like Glass Onion or Four Rooms aren't horror, then The Menu isn't either.

Honestly the climax of the movie felt predictable and it felt like it started losing its momentum. Started out fantastic but ended up disappointing
