A new look at the John Playford dance of 1651
This version is based ont the John Playford's description. The original dance is a good dance for beginners although the first part brings its part of mystery since there is too much music for the figures prescribed. I enlarged on Playford so as to contrive a dance interesting for advanced dancers. I hope it is so ! The tune is so good it must not be dropped.
"Les joyeuses laitières" apportent beaucoup de plaisir aux débutants, mais les danseurs avancés ont besoin d'enchaînements moins prévisibles, j'ai donc produit une autre version qui s'inspire d'ailleurs de trois danses du répertoire. Dans la première partie, la longueur de la phrase musicale ne correspond pas au mouvement prescrit. Cela fait partie des nombreux problèmes à résoudre quand on s'intéresse à ce répertoire pour le préserver.

The costumes worn for this recording are a mixture from different periods.

Possibly, our first goal is beautiful dancing, besides chestnut balls cater for the four main periods of Countrydancing : Arbeau and Playford- 18th century- Regency-traditional and modern. We cannot change costume four times so the dress code is Regency-Empire which is not accurate for The Merry Merry Milkmaids published in 1651 and certainly older than that. On top of that I have revisited the dance so it is not the John Playford version either. Thank you for watching

Yes indeed it is the Chestnut revised version of the John Playford dance edited in 1651. This version and a simpler one will be danced at the Chestnut period ball due June 9th. Thank you for watching
