This is the song that made hip hop realize that they could do much more than just party rhymes, that Hip Hop, could be a voice to talk about real life, and real issues

Grandmaster Flash is the DJ. The rappers in the song were Melle Mel and Rahiem. The Group consisted of Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, Rahiem, Scorpio, Cowboy (RIP), and Mel's brother The Kidd Creole.

If you guys haven't, watch The Get Down on Netflix. It has to do with the rise of early hip-hop within disco. NAS helped produce it and has Grandmaster Flash takes on it as well. Pretty good

This song was marketed as Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, but it was actually produced by Duke Bootee and performed by him and Melle Mel. Melle Mel is the guy with the hat and is considered an all-time great. They had a couple of other songs, the Message II and New York New York. New York New York was also billed as Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five. Weird things happened in the early days of rap. Duke Bootee did more schooling, left hip hop in the early 90s and because a college instructor in the Georgia.

That last verse is a top 10 verse in the history of rap.Flows hadn't evolved to what they are now. They just said it in a direct manner.I appreciate the simplicity.Adds more clarity & makes it easier to follow.I think this and Tupac's Keep Your Head Up are the two greatest hip hop songs ever made. That's just my opinion, tho.Yours could be different!

Also...a bit of history, I think it was Grandmaster Flash who invented the crossfader on Turntables so you could switch from one table to the other and also combine the music from both turntables. or I know he has something to do with the crossfader, maybe it was a technique using it.

if im not wrong he was the first one to do "scratch", which is manipulating the vinyl backwards or forward while the record is playing to make that cool "tchuku tchuku" sound (lol), allowing the dj to put his own twist on the records, and so he revolutionized the dj world.. He also started marking his vinyls with crayon and used that as his compass, and changed the game with such a simple idea

I love this song. I was never a huge fan of early 80s rap because it was all pop and some of it a bit non-sensical (Rapper's delight), but when I heard this I was hooked. Really the building block for a lot of my favorite rappers to see you could rap about something serious for a change. The music is poppy, I think that's just because of the nature of early rap. They were mostly sampling disco at the time so no real "somber" or "serious" disco to draw from. I'd be curious to see you guys react to Puff Daddy's Can't Nobody Hold Me Down since he remade the song and made it mostly poppy instead of serious. People hate on Diddy, but I love that song. Ice Cube also used the beat for the Check Yo Self remix with Das Efx and that would be another good one for you guys to react to, though I suspect Jill has probably heard it already. Ryan mentioned Ice Cube so that would be his chance to hear how Cube would sound over the same beat.

Flash is the DJ. The second guy's name is Raheem. The group never wanted to do this record because it was different than every other song they had. The second rapper you hear is actually the writer Duke Bootee and Raheem just lip-synced for the video. You should definitely check out some of their other songs to hear his style.. I suggest Freedom, White Lines and It's Nasty.

The last verse in the end “undercover fag” is nothing about being a police snitch, it’s about the kid being raped in jail. “Used and abused to serve like hell”. Maytag is a term meaning you are used over and over. Commercials back in the day said Maytag was a reliable washing machine, so the person is being raped over and over again, and at the end is hung - either kills himself or is killed.

Classic rap track.. still great lyrics and delivery from Melle Mel and the Furious Five. I recommend you also checkout Survival.. another great lyrical track from them. If interested in the history of Hip Hop I recon you should lookup some of the documentaries on KZbin which go way back to the 70's and early 80's ...and around the time of this track. You'lll also get the early electro rap music like Planet Rock, Lookin For The Perfect Beat etc.. that came from Afrika Bambaatta and the Sould Sonic Force, also checkout Treacherous Three, Funky Four, Cold Crush Brothers, Sequence (the first proper Female Rap group) .. these were all very early rap artists of the 80's

Even tho today the message & truth is the same, the way he says it seems more sane & trying to "prevent from goin' under" POV. in my opinion. To me, the 80s & 90s seemed more safe & sane than today. "Anyone can get it" now a days it seems. Before some were left alone but not today it seems. Nothing is "sacred" currently. In my opinion.

Shad’s Hip-Hop Evolution series on Netflix really is just about perfect, unfortunately. It’s essentially the exact concept & format that I had been working on writing over the past decade, rendering my whole project moot basically. It’s nauseating quite frankly, but it is what it is - Shad is a fantastic artist so it’s awesome to see him attain so much success as well, and finally too - he’s long been overdue for increased recognition. He’s released 2 concept albums that are extremely high-quality - especially the more recent album, “A Short Story About a War,” which is essential listening in my opinion.
