Although rap was around small clubs and on street corners in the Bronx and Brooklyn in the late 70s, it took Blondie's RAPTURE, in 1981, and Herbie Hancock's, ROCK IT in 1982, The Fat Boys in 1984, and RunDMC and the Beasties boys in 1985-86 to get rap started on the radio. LL cool J was discovered by Ad Rock from the Beastie boys, hanging out at Rick Rubin's NYU dorm room. LL really elevated rap to the next step in acceptance. One thing about many music videos in the 80s, is that the RECORD COMPANY would hire a music video DIRECTOR and they would create their own abstract visions of what the video should be as THEIR OWN art, not the artists they are portraying. Think of it like those commercials that are moody and confusing and then you find out it was an ad for jeans, and the commercial had nothing to do with jeans. Music videos were the same. What you watched on MTV was not necessarily the "message" of the song. It was just the director's cocaine induced "dream".

Roger Troutman called it a vocoder. It's his signature sound on his hit songs More Bounce to the Ounce, Computer Love, and that beat itself was his from So ruff so tuff. Unfortunately Roger passed away and never got his dues in music.

A lot of those lyrics are wrong. Not sure who put that lyrics video together, but they're leading people astray The song is about the white Christian power structure and how it holds black people down. It's not explicitly against Christianity, but how it's used within that power structure (by certain people) against others

By 6:10 ive seen enough, i cant take no more of the disrespect, even though thats not your intentions. You just stupid as hell, she is a little more understanding, but he is aan idiot. And no point in the song did he talk about a girl and him doing her wrong...smdh. pay attention my man.

Brooklyn NY born and raised, in the 80's, and yes, you are 100% correct in how you imagined that era 😂! Slick Rick's album 3 years after this song was a seismic shockwave in NYC when it dropped!

Biggie, DMX, Busta, Nas and Method Man. These are some of the best to ever do it. I must say this album (Get Rich or die trying) was probably the last great hip hop album to be made from the end of that era.

I just found your reactions and while the girl is lovely, dude you're completely missing the point of this song. You're looking for reasons to hate it. His music can be heavy, which is good because it gets you to feel things. You're not even paying attention to the lyrics, but wondering why he's wearing glasses or why he's singing ..

If you're metalheads, you should really enjoy this Fuck Tha Police cover by Nu metal band Dope, their take on the song is pretty badass. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5W8lGh8eayGndk it has a very Rob Zombie feel to it if you ask me, which I just love.
