Honestly, I can understand where Demeter was coming from. Her daughter was literally taken from her and if nobody had stepped in, she likely wouldn't have seen Persephone again. So, while extreme, Demeter's reaction was 100% justified.

100%true. When I was a kid I never felt much for Demeter, because my own relationship with my mother was not that good. but after I grow up and read Homer's Hymn to Demeter, I realise how justified her actions was and how much she must love her daughter.

Being named Demetria, of Demeter, I have nothing but sympathy for her. I had to stop reading Lore Olympus because of the mom-projecting hatred that version of Demeter gets from the readers. This woman is raped, tricked, lied to by her own peers, had her child stolen from her, and we still twist her to be the villain.

Same! But I only remember that back in junior high when our art teacher was teaching us how to create ancient Greek designs of different Greek gods; I remember one goddess I chose was Artemis. I even remembered an art video she showed us about a man (can't remember his name) who fell in love with Melinoë. And I kid you not the art design for the video was so bizarre, it felt like I was on acid and ended up getting myself in trouble for speaking out the truth of how stupid it looked, but I accidentally used the r word to express how I felt. Knowing I had the absolute right to say that word because I was in ISD during that time.

Also there’s actually a new literary theory that Demeter isn’t responsible for winter but for summer. The original hymn makes reference to droughts and in Greece the summer is so hot that often the ground isn’t moist or fertile enough to sow or grow anything. As a result autumn is for sowing, winter for growth and tending to crops and spring is for harvest.

I'm sorry for your loss and I agree with you. Like, what mother wouldn't grieve at the sudden loss of her daughter and the fact that no one (save for two) wanted to help her at the behest of their patriarch? The Homeric hymn expressively told how both Demeter and Persephone were happy to see each other, implying Persephone was never oppressed by her mother and that they had a healthy mother-daughter relationship.

Off course Demeter has that power. Boreas and nymphs obeys higher gods than themselves. All the wind gods are also the winds of seasons, amd they obey both Zeus and Demeter in order to bring seasons. Take Zeus for example, the clouds and stars that he ruled over are nymphs and lesser deities, but he is still responsible for the rain and storms, even if he not the cloud or rain itself, and the same applies to Demeter, she is not the season itself, but she can control the seasons and winds at will.

@sonofcronos7831
@sonofcronos7831 Жыл бұрын
@@alexandriacollins7119 Demeter literaly causes winter (or harsh summer) in the persephone story. Also, gods can do things if it falls in their domain. For example, Poseidon is the god of the sea, but in the Odyssey he is constantly making storms against Odysseus, is not that Zeus domain? When the persians tried to invade Thessaly once, their fleet were destroyed by a thunderstorm, and the greeks worshiped Poseidon for that. Demeter, being the goddess of the earth, also has control over seasons, weather and winds, even if this also falls more or less in Zeus domain. The Seasons obeys Demeter everywhere in poetry. Also, why would Boreas make the earth cold in the same time that Demeter is angry and the goddess has nothing to do with it? Because she was the one that caused the earth to be cold, and elsewhere in greek myth and cult she is always responsible for the seasons.

I memorized a ton of Greek Mythology stories in high school... and never thought they'd come in handy. I just knew I liked them. However, they've become my youngest child's favorite bedtime stories and the story of Demeter, Hades and Persephonie is her favorite.

The fact that Demeter's followers would consider themselves immortal would be ironic as her own daughter was taken to the underworld .

I have loved fall and winter all my life since I was a kid! And learning this story many years ago, I've loved it even more. Since I first read the story of Demeter and Persephone, I think about Persephones abduction every year. There are some who believe that Persephone prefers being with Hades because of her influence in the underworld. Idk if that's true, but I'd like to think so. In the end, whether she likes it or not, that is her fate. I'd like to think of Persephone as very adaptable.

Why would Demeter be upset that her daughter must go to Hades 1/3 of the year? Why is that a question? A mother should be upset that her daughter must be with someone they despised.

I would say that it would be impossible for there to be anxious heart from the Mediterranean depicting the goddess with corn in her hair since corn is in western hemisphere plant and thus would not have been known

I don't think we should blame Demeter for the extended winter. Rather we haven't been sacrificing enough to appease her.

You should make a What If series, like What If Rhea hid away Poseidon rather than Zeus! Would it go the same way? Would he get caught? Would Zeus still take ultimate power or would it be Poseidon?

Cause it ticks off most of the love tropes or could easily be twisted into the tropes even if the original myths don't match with the modern depictions Bad edgy boy + good, sheltered girl (even if the original myths didn't portray them like that most modern depictions show Hades as edgy or darker) Forbidden love Grumpy man who is only happy around 1 bright girl Rich man + young cheery girl People take them as a symbol of loyalty cause they are one of the few couples where neither cheat as much as the other gods but both have cases where they are close to cheating such as Adonis and Minthe. Young, cheery girl falls in love against parents wishes and parent tries to stop it but fails Opposite attract sort of thing (God of the underworld and goddess of the Spring the season of birth and renewal)
