This is just a slight addition to how Artemis was regarded in Spartan society. While you highlighted that she was regarded as Spartan goddess of warfare, she held equal importance as the goddess of childbirth. In Spartan society, a woman who died in childbirth (creating a new Spartan) was given the same honours and respect and funeral rites as a Spartan man who died in battle. I don't want to detract from your excellent summary here - I just thought it was an interesting point to make.

There's the version Gaia kills Orion, version Artermis kills him for trying to rape Opis, and in other he tries to grabs Artemis' rope and she kills him. The only quality that makes her stand out from most of the gods is the fact that she wanted to remain pure and be independent from men. Unlike her other siblings like Aphrodite who started a war and her step-mother Hera who tried to make every women who Zeus slept with miserable with these horrible punishments and killing off the innocent children. Yes, Artemis is very protective over her purity to the point she would kill a man who sees her exposed, but she can be merciful. Like that myth about a little boy who saw Artemis bathe in a lake by mistake, she couldn't kill a child so she gave him the option to die as a boy or become an immortal girl who will join Artemis in her hunts.

The one Artemis story I don't hear often is during the Iliad: Artemis had the goal to call Apollo a coward for standing down when approached by Poseidon. So Hera, wishing to teach her stepdaughter respect, decked her with her own bow and sent her crying to daddy.

What’s really amazing about this series is that one can see the commonalities across cultures’ deities. For instance, in the Yoruba pantheon, there’s a deity named Ochosi; he basically represents the same concept as Artemis. Hunter, deer are sacred to him, synonymous with magic, killed his mother by acting too hastily, etc. These commonalities make me think of Joseph Campbell’s “Hero of a Thousand Faces” hypothesis - either something happened globally and we interpreted the phenomenon based on our culture/location or we’re all the same so we create the same stories. Thanks for the series m8!

It's weird that the story of Callisto, reminds me of the beginning of Medusa's story. It seems more like her keeping the secret rather then explaining from the beginning is what led to that punishment. I still hold strong that she's one of the least savage of the pantheon as she has only punished the insolent. No tricks, just righting the wrongs of hubris.

I currently got approved to have a book I have written to be published in the UK. It's not typical facts instead it's a fantasy novel but I base the origins heavily on Greek mythology. Although my first book is already in publishing I'm pleased to note that alot of my pervious content stems very closely to origins you have explained already so thank the heavens for that... Just wanted to say I'm finding your videos very insightful and I'm finding ways to incorporate these mythological facts into my next two installments of my trilogy so thank you. Hades is not an Olympian in the slightest, so this is only natural. You could just as well say that the Olympians are more villainous (read: morally grey) than Hekate or Thanatos... yeah, they are, but they also appear in countless stories and have well-developed personalities unlike the underworld deities. Also, love how y'all like to pretend Hestia doesn't exist.

I remember reading in the 12 tasks that Artemis told hercules that he could capture the deer, on the condition he must not shed a single drop of blood. So hercules breaks the arrow tip off and shoots the deer at the ankles while it was running away. The arrow penetrates 2 legs at the same time stopping the deer in its tracks, and didn't make the deer bleed due to no tip.

Oh? Have you really counted them? In the oldest surviving version of this story, the one who changed Kallisto into a bear was definitely Artemis. As for the much later accounts, there are other two in which Artemis did it, two in which Zeus was the one who changed the girl and two or three in which Hera was responsible for the transformation. So, there is an equal number of versions where Artemis and Hera changed Kallisto into a bear, with the added bonus that the account of Artemis is older by more than half a millennium and the account of Hera doing it appears mostly in Roman sources. Besides, even in the versions in which Kallisto is metamorphosed by either Hera or Zeus, Artemis is still almost always the one who kills her.

@@CazRaX nah u a misogynist bro. The myths are very clear in their choice of words. She hung out in remote places with her posse, it’s why it’s always ‘hunters’ and ‘youths’ that see her. Because they went looking for them. Because the Greek word used is ‘spying on’ like you would prey. The moral of the story has been lost in the modern world. They didn’t oopsie come across her. This story is ‘don’t harass women far out alone in the countryside bc they might actually be goddesses and kill you magically’. I bet you think Bathsheba seduced King David in the Bible too, but there again, even in another patriarchal culture, it’s very clear that she was bathing in the normal fashion and he went to the effort to be a peeping Tom, and ordering his soldiers to take her so he could rape her.
