As a witch and devotee I was really nervous about this.I'm glad you showed how Hecate is not evil. I wish you had mentioned how Shakespeare sullied Hecate's name or how Crowley badmouthed her. Or how her cult is alive today in the pagan and witchcraft communities. Quite a few books about her have been written in the past 10-15 years. Jason Miller, Sorita d'Este, and Jeff Cullen being just a few. Also, "virgin" or "maiden" didn't refer to someone who'd never had sexual intercourse or showed no romantic interest, but someone who was unmarried. Someone who was not tied down by family duties. In reference to Artemis and Apollo, Hecate has a very strong connection. They're her cousins as their mothers Asteria and Leto are sisters. Artemis's name is directly linked to Hecate's in the Greek Magical Papyri and some of the scrolls call upon Hecate and Apollo together. There's also the Chaldean Oracles that show worship of Hecate and Zeus together. Although that was a few centuries after the fall of Rome.

We must also remember that prior to what maidenhood meant after the dark ages, during the time of the ancient Greeks “maidenhood” was not conflated with virginity but instead meant young women who were not married nor sometimes had children. So Hekate being a maiden meant she was unwed nor wanted to be. We must also remember that powerful women who were “witches” tended to be independent women and the goddess was also independent to the misogynistic Greeks could vilify and revere a powerful non virginal woman.

And I've heard somewhere that the word "kidnapped" was used differently back then, meaning that the parents (I believe more specifically the mother) didn't agree to the marriage between the couple

@rivershaley Жыл бұрын
do you have any historical hellenic references for that?

i really think “chose” is a stretch considering she’s described being “terrified with tears” by ovid(though he was roman). in the hymn to demeter helios tells her directly that zeus arranged for persephone to be taken by hades and he’s described as “seizing her by force” “drove his chariot as she screamed out loud” . the rape of persephone is emphasized as an awful act in the mythos and hymns. to deny that is to deny a major role of hekate in the mythos. two quotes directly from persephone to demeter: “but he, stealthily, put into my hand the berry of the pomegranate, that honey-sweet food, and he compelled me by biâ(meaning force) to eat of it. As for how it was that he snatched me away, through the mêtis of the son of Kronos, my father, and how he took me down beneath the depths of the earth” “He took me away under the earth in his golden chariot. *It was very much against my will*. I cried with a piercing voice. These things, grieving, I tell you, and they are all alêthea(meaning truth).”
@graceneilitz76617 ай бұрын
That doesn’t exist. Unless you are talking about a story made up in the 1980s by a woman who wanted more feministic mythological stories. Persephone was always unwilling, and Demeter had every right to be angry and sorrowful at the kidnapping of her daughter by her brother. As a side note, Demeter was betrayed by all three of her brothers during the search for Persephone.

Hecate is the Goddess that is called upon during Samhain(Sa-when), in the Wiccan Religion. Which is on Halloween each year. To help bring in the Wiccan New Year. Hecate is also represented as the 3 main goddesses of the Wiccan Religion. There's a lot more information about it in the Wiccan Religion, but I don't want to take up too much space.

Another fellow witch and I honor Hekate at certain times with ritual. I appreciate your approach and good research (I've heard that's a great book). Hekate was a balance of dark and light, and no darkness isn't evil it's just the sides of us which we bury because of extreme emotions like shame, anger, guilt, etc. She is the one we do 'shadow work' with to shine a light on our darkness and bring us into balance. This was well-done for a condensed version and all (most?) of us witches appreciate it.

Just wanted to say you did a good job on portraying Hekate as a chill Goddess that actually helps. I do want to add that Hekate is also seen as THE primordial all mother. She is also said to be the mother of angels, Goddess of daemons and is seen as a balance keeper and mediator between worlds. She is a Goddess of infinite power that has influence in all beliefs and doesn't need worship in order to have power. She is also said to create her own realms and destroy them as she sees fit. Again though thank you for portraying her in a positive light!☺️☺️☺️

what I love about the greek gods and old gods in general is that they feel so human. They are kind, helpful and forgiving, but at the same time they can be horrible, ruthless and scary. They are reel characters who you can learn from. Unlike most gods now, like the christian one, who is so perfect in every way that he seems impossible to be reel. He is unrelatable. You don't learn from perfection, you learn from flaws and mistakes.

I know it has been a year but I was equally questioning this quip about Circe who is part Titan too being Helios' daughter and her mother a nymph which is where she is believed to have gotten her magical abilities along with her two brothers and sister by the same mother. Perses, Hekate's father is Circe's brother. Circe was banished to Aiaia so unless Hermes had mentioned her neice to her how would she know of her let alone have a need to evoke her?

I've never seen any representations of Hecate or any gods besides those in Disney's Hercules so my view hasn't been colored by such things. I've always found any goddess of any religion or culture fascinating especially when they aren't pure good or bad like you say. Including Hecate though I was unclear about whether Circe & Hecate were the same goddess so I learned that and quite a bit more on this goddess that this video helped me realize I knew very little about. Though going researching mythology can be a bit of a pain especially when sources conflict. Thanks for this video 😃

@@It_Is_Oylenox Most versions of that myth state that the kidnapping was because of Demeter, who certainly would not have given her blessing even if Persephone herself would have been fine with marrying Hades, mostly because even Demeter did not ask her. Also you realize that Greek Mythology is literally incest from the earliest possible point? Gaia gave birth to Uranos and then they had several children, the Titans being one set of them, who also married amongst each other. Rhea and Kronos where siblings and their children the Olympians just continued the family tradition.

@@It_Is_Oylenox compared to most Greek love stories I would say Persephone won the jackpot when it comes to love. Before she wasn't really a goddess of anything in particular ( we don't know what her cults saw her as exactly, and the modern explanation of her being the Goddess of Spring doesn't make sense in a way) but when she got with Hades she became his equal and became the Queen of the Underworld. Considering also how women were viewed and seen in the Greek mythos to have a story where a woman rules equally with her husband is nothing that should be overlooked! Not to mention, it was not so much kidnapping as it was an arranged marriage since Zeus(head honcho of the Gods) gave her to Hades. And while we're on the topic of incest and questionable morality,there is also a myth that Zeus raped Persephone . So in comparison,Hades is among the morally righteous gods in the mythology.
@LucianCorrvinus3 жыл бұрын
@@tainii-san5879 the Gods could be incestuous without the prescriptive applied to Humans. So it is and so its always been with many Gods. That's cuz Gods are usually from a singular progenitor or pair.. They are all related anyhow. They are also beyond Human limitation. In ancient Greece women were not equals. The had some autonomy but not to the level of being seen as co rulers. Persephone and the cultus around her own journey to the Underworld are the basis of what we know of as the Elusyan ( sic) Mysteries and was perhaps the greatest cultas of it's time. ..eclipsed only by Isis cultas that spread across the known World and was the last great Goddess cultus to fall to Christianity in early CE...Common Era aka AD....there has been some evidence the worship and understanding of Her predates those mysteries and the story itself. Making Her a Queen if the Underworld from earliest conception. Much like Engekhal from Mesopotamia or Hel from Nordic Mythos. And some say the reason Zues gave Her to Hades was because Hades had been cheated by Zeus game of knucklebones that divided up the Heavens the Sea and the Underworld after the war with the Titans.....and Hades found out....
