So what we can learn from this myth is that Loki was a freak, he was pro-life when it at least comes to his kids and instead of turning ANYTHING ELSE into a beautiful mare for Goldfax to chase after he put it upon himself to do the work, looping back around to that he was indeed, a freak. Also! We know that Loki instead of turning himself into a mare without the ability to give birth elected to turn himself into a mare that CAN give birth. Professionalism. He does not like to half ass a transformation.

@@brandi3981 lol I think you are overthinking… it’s a myth, a story. All the parts don’t need to be explained. This part of the story was told to explain instead why the Giant wasn’t able to finish the walls of Asgard in time to win a bet . It was also a way to explain Sleipnir origin. Why Loki didn’t turn into his male human form immediately once the deed was done ? Probably to make the story more fantastical !

@@Horus070 Brandi isn't the only person to ever ask these questions. It's a great story, one of my favorites about Loki. But it raises so many questions. Surely he could have tempted the horse away with some yummy irresistible food drawing the horse away while they were at rest. And I think I recently found out it wasn't the only time Loki became a mother. But I'm not positive that's canon. I kind of hope it is. It would suggest Loki likes being pregnant...he doesn't seem to be a great parent though.

Loki's whole vibe is that of a kid nobody cared to help have manners and then get yelled at for not having manners. Just like his other son, that poor wolf could have been a powerful ally but nope, let's chain and alienate it until it's big enough to swallow the earth. I love Loki's lack of gender affirmation, though i do agree that in this case it might have been an oversight that the stallion wouldn't stop chasing him

You know the more you learn about Norse mythology you wore you learned that Loki is actually in the top three of quasi decent people. Almost every single Norris God is vile. They don't have any redeeming qualities except for like I said three and Loki's the third. I wish we had the complete works so we could understand why they chose to give the types of personality traits they gave and assigned to their gods. It is fascinating.

Nearly the same can be said about the old greek gods as well, they could be capricious and outright cruel. Most humans who encountered them often didn't survive it or if they did walked away transfigured and deformed. In a similar fashion Hades is one of the few with any redeeming qualities. He kept to himself, did not torture mortals for his own amusement, and what punishments he did hand out in the underworld always fit the crime.

For Hel, Fenrir, and Jormungandr it's Daddy, for Sleipnir it's Mommy. Also I love explaining this myth to people who only know Marvel movies and just get flabbergasted. @@nara9404 the anime is Oh! My Goddess, or sometimes Ah! My Goddess. Norse mythology is borrowed extensively for the goddesses' relm. The three main goddesses in the story are named after the Norns. Urd, Belldandy (Verdandi), and Skuld. The Norns are beings in charge of weaving the fate of the world and represent the past, present and future in traditional Norse. The classic crone, mother and maiden trio. Tho being anime, they're all a bit closer in age. Slepnir doesn't appear much, just one of those other Nose based cameos. @Croftice1
@Croftice1 Жыл бұрын
But he's not Loki's son in MCU, Odin received him even before adopting Loki. In MCU Sleipnir just kinda exists, that's it. Not related to any origins, Odin has received him from an unknown source. Maybe from his father Borr? Who knows. The Fenris wolf (I prefer Fenrir, but whatever) and Hela (again Hel) also aren't Loki's children in MCU. And they didn't even bother to show Jormungandr, so he's likely non-existent, or they keep him secret for some future movies (which is weird according to his significance in Ragnarök). So far no traces of the World Serpent. So while Sleipnir indeed does exist in the MCU, he's unrelated to the myths, he's just Odin's mysterious steed.

There seems to be several versions, how do we know which is older? I've read several sources that said it wasn't a fortress but the walls around the entire city that the builder had to build in one year. Another difference I remember is that it didn't mention Loki being a cow, instead it said he spent time on Midgard disguised as a milkmaid bearing children. I also remember something about Odin using a magical harness on Sleipnir to control him.
@fictionlover2064
@fictionlover2064 2 жыл бұрын
It's not which is older and which newer. It has to do with the translations. It's difficult to accurately translate other languages, more so ancient ones. That's why there are different interpretations in addition to different sources!
@Katzztar
@Katzztar 2 жыл бұрын
@@fictionlover2064- Translations is a problem and could be the thing here. Sometimes the translation is not a mistake but was purposeful. That is proven with Snorri's translations differing from the Danish myths. In the Danish myths, Loki had nothing to do with Baldr's death. it was pure chance a mistletoe arrow was used. But the Christian Snorri gave the trickster Loki a more Devil-like bent in his translations, Loki was directly responsible as he was the one to trick Holdr (sp?) to use a mistletoe arrow, thus causing the death of Baldr. But in case of Loki, there is a difference between older and younger myths. There are some older myths that Loki was oath-brother to Odin and married a fire giantess and had 2 girls with her. Younger myths had Odin finding baby Loki after defeating his father Faubuti in battle, as such Odin fostered the baby Loki, raising him alongside Thor, having 3 children by Angrboda, then later marrying Asgardian Sigyn and having 2 sons by her.

Odin rides Slepnir to save Thor, Loki and crew from the Frost Giants in the first Thor movie (MCU). Same part where Loki learns he’s a Frost Giant (again, MCU version). So they already introduced the horse and Loki’s Umm, changeable nature 😅😉. Blink and you’ll miss it!

The version of this story I heard was he would build a wall around Valheim, not a fortress. The rest is the same. The builder had all the stone cut before going to the Aesir. And Sleipnir fathered the pegasus ridden by the Valkyrie, and each pegasi honors Loki as "grandmother."

That horse may be one of Loki's most shameful reminders. I really don't blame him if his butt hurt every time he looked at it. But I do believe if people ever did have the ability to shape shift like he does. Or if we figure out a way to interchange our body parts for designer ones on the shelves. We probably won't be any better. Plus I still bet he enjoyed it. 🤷🤨🤫

The Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard books by Rick Riordan explores the story of one Loki's children. If you like Norse mythology, you will love these trio of books. Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book One: The Sword of Summer, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book Two: The Hammer of Thor and Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book Three: The Ship of the Dead (Book Three.)

I know this myth too, like I know most other Norse myths. But it's the first time I've laughed this much at the retelling. I know, it's actually quite a serious matter but still, it's just really messed up.

Kinda feel bad for Loki though, it wasn’t his fault the fortress was built, he gave a suggestion, their fault for listening. And he was on a time crunch and his life was in the line. +that’s a rape by a horse sooo…. imagine how traumatizing that is if u were in his position. 😅

Sleipner is a shape changer, via his father. He's not just a horse - that's just a shape he uses. Loki himself is a Jotnar, and all of those are shape shifters. If you are really interested in the subject Arith Harger is all things Norse and does an excellent job of explaining the gods.

If you're getting into Egyptology, you'll most likely read The Book of the Dead. I read all 1,000 plus pages of that bad boy tome and it was magnificent ! I absolutely loved it. Of course, it's tremendous that Riordan really knew what he was doing when he wrote The Chronicles of Cane and every other mythological series he has penned. I admire that man's dedication and the team he works with. I also have a suggestion. There is a game called 'Apple Core' and I am curious as to where it comes from. The game is probably never played and you never really hear or see it unless you come across old cartoons. I'm also interested in Little Orphan Annie's 'Ghost Tale', which I can recall the rhyme somewhat, but it seems very unusual for Riley to have written something so dark.

Loki always got the short end of the stick when it came to the Aesir... They couldn't come up with solutions so they pinned it on him to find one and then mocked him when they saved their asses. Then christianity started to peg him as an evil god because he transformed and used his wits... yeah and Thor got Glorified because he put the Aesir and himself in trouble by NOT using his brain and having Loki prevent his ass from being served to him. He bashed in more skulls than anyone and never got a bad rep for... Messed up much?

A hilarious myth, one of my favorite. I'd love to see Marvel do this, or at least a reference to eat. Kind of a dick move by Odin & the rest of the pantheon to hold this against Loki. The got Sleipner out of it, & he saved their asses. Maybe he convinced them to go for it but it was still the final decision of Odin and/or the council he called. Now Loki's other kids ...

Tomorrow is Easter, assuming it isn't Sunday where you are now, and there are just some crazy things we did with the mythos of Easter, the history of how we came to the development of the Easter Bunny alone is quite the wild ride.
