panda gaming the shoes where built specially for her. So even if they did have the same shoe size, it still wouldn’t fit as properly for the person. Or because of the magic from the Fairy God Mother. Or she could have a unique shoe size, to big for little feet and to small for the bigger feet. Which would be the magic.

Disney's adaptation of Cinderella was based on the French version of the story that was in a collection of fairy tails that was published by Charles Perrault in 1697. The two version are identical in every way except that Disney killed off her father because he was a bad role model. In the Perrault version the father was essentially brainwashed into treating his own daughter horribly, even going so far as to call her Cinderella rather than her own name. The Grimm version is the German version of the story. Grimm did not invent the story, as the version he and his brother published was done in 1812, which is well after Perrault wrote down the French version. The Cinderella story does go further back than the 1690s, as there was an Italian version that was written down in 1638, and it is not credited to any one author. A thing you missed about the Grimm version is that the step sisters tried the shoes on while they were next to Cinderella's tree and the birds perched in it were the ones that alerted everyone to the blood in the shoe. They sung something like this, "Ku-coo Ku-coo, there's blood in that shoe."

Actually in this version of the tale, the birds swoop down to peck out one eye each from the sisters right as they reach the palace, and peck out their remaining eyes after the wedding, so that the last thing they ever saw was Cinderella’s happy ending.😎 God i love those birds.😏

I wanna add, that when the prince rode home with Cinderella's stepsisters the birds from her tree tell him: "Ruckedigoo, Ruckedigoo, blood is in the shoe. The shoe is too small. The right bride still sits at home." And when he rides to the castle with Cinderella they tell him: Ruckedigoo, Ruckedigoo. No blood is in the shoe. The shoe is not to small he's taking the right bride home.

They were linguists that were collecting the fairytales, edited and published them. They changed some fairytales and made them less cruel or more child-friendly. The stories have been around for centuries and the origins were actually for adults. Rapunzel gets pregnant in an old version for example. In the Grimm version they are holding hands. Disney took those and made them even more harmless.

Fun fact: The first version of Cinderella was written in 4 BC, didn’t include most of the stuff in the Brother’s Grimm version but here’s the rundown; A slave goes out to the river to bathe, takes off her clothes to do so, a nearby eagle sees this and decides to steal her sandal. The eagle then flies from Greece (where the slave lived btw) to Egypt where he dropped it on the pharaoh. So Pharaoh is all ‘o cool I’ll marry whoever this belongs to’ and he sails around the known world trying to find this lady so he finds the slave and he marries her. Pretty unrealistic but we’re looking at the same people who created one of the most interesting mythologies out there

.....He killed his wife tho. Some believe it was because of Hera, and that she drove her insane. Also, Hercules is the Roman name of Heracles, his Greek name. He hated Hera though, and Hera hated him. She gave him the twelve labors. Hera also wasn’t his mother. Heracles was a demigod. Zeus actually had many affairs with mortal women, even though Hera was his wife. The centaur that trained Heracles was Chiron. Producers also combined the fates with the gray ladies. The fates have the string. The gray ladies have the one eye and tooth. There’s SO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT. Gods of Olympus, one could ramble about it all day and night. (Percy Jackson am I right xD)

Yup. Greek children learn the origins of Hercules (Hracles in Greek- his mother was Alcmene who had a love affair with Zeus - that's why Hercules is a demi-god. And that's why Hera hate Hercules°he was one of the many sons of Zeus from other women and Hera was basically jealous and angry about it.) from the age of 10 in the history lesson (in greece we call it Mythology) Remember when I was 10. I loved Mythology.

The Brothers Grimm version isn't the original. The story goes back centuries. The two oldest versions were Ancient Greek and Ancient Chinese stories. The Greek story is known as Rhodopis and the Chinese story is Ye Xian. They may go by different names but each one involves a servant girl, evil siblings, an awesome party thrown by a royal bachelor, and golden footwear. Rhodopis' story is older but Ye Xian's tale is the first one to have all the plot points we associate either the Cinderella story.

Regarding Ye Xian the Chinese Cinderella, did you know about the ancient Chinese practice of foot binding? Apparently, young girls were made to go through this gruesome practice from early childhood onwards because small feet in women were considered the ultimate beauty trademark, especially if extremely ambitious parents wanted their daughters to be married off to wealthy husbands when they were old enough to do so, this was an era when matchmaking was relied on more often than today.

In the ending I remember, the Cinderella marries the prince, he finds out how the Evil Step-sisters and Step-mother were treating her and called them to the palace... They came in all very gracious and ready to please the prince by sucking up. So the prince tells a story of evil people being mean to a sweet young girl and they need to be punished, and ask the steps to name a punishment for such a crime. The Step mum and sisters were eager to show how morally upright they were, were shocked and dismayed at such awful behavior and of course, pronounced a severe punishment would be in order! They should be shoved into barrels full of spikes and rolled down a hill.'The prince wholeheartedly agreed and ordered it done... to the evil Step mom and sisters. And the Prince and Cinderella lived happily ever after.

Actually, if you watch the Disney Movie closely, you realize the Prince never said he wanted to marry the first girl that shoe fit. His father, fed up with the prince's refusal to marry, decided to give his son the chance to go out and search for the girl he danced with, under the condition he'd marry the first girl the shoe fits, regardless of whether it's actually the right girl or not.

Disney's Cinderella was more inspired by the Charles Perrault version, not the Brothers Grimm's version. The Grimm version of Cinderella isn't the oldest version to claim it as an origin nor is it the first written version of the tale. (that we have found) Think of the Brothers Grimm as the edgelords of their time and making tales much more darker.

Straight from en.wikipedia.org: "The story of Rhodopis, recounted by the Greek geographer Strabo in around 7 BC, about a Greek slave girl who marries the king of Egypt, is usually considered as the earliest known variant of the "Cinderella" story.[1][2][3] The first literary European version of the story was published in Italy by Giambattista Basile in his Pentamerone in 1634; the most popular version was published by Charles Perrault in Histoires ou contes du temps passé in 1697,[4] and later by the Brothers Grimm in their folk tale collection Grimms' Fairy Tales in 1812."

Its stated in various Brothers Grimm collections that they didn't write most of the stories in their books, they simply went around recording various stories as they heard them. It could easily be that the Brothers didn't make the stories "much more darker" but over time the stories changed with some of them becoming more dark by the time the Brothers Grimm recorded them.

Its so true. The hans christian anderson versions are MUCH"darker" than thier disney counterparts. But remember that walt disney was a huge kid himself and would stop at nothing to assure that NOTHING was unfriendly in the least to children. Walt abandoned snow queen in the 30's because he could not find the right combo for snow queen. It took until frozen to get elsa (snow queen) into play. When these fairy tales were written it was to keep children quiet and in the day things were much more sinister than now.
@julecaesara482
@julecaesara482 5 жыл бұрын
I would argue about that the tales were written to keep kids quiet. The Grimm brothers for example wrote in a foreword to their collections (they didn't invent the fairy tales, they travelled Germany to write the tales down that were told at people's homes so they wouldn't be forgotten) that they changed some details so the children wouldn't be afraid. In fact, there are some voices that claim that children need fairy tales that punish the bad characters.

None of the Grimm tales are original, they were all versions of previous stories that circulated in Europe in one form or another. Also many of those were very dark and grotesque, so Grimm probably did not have to make them darker. And "grim" does not derive from the Bros. Grimm, but was already a word in old English. It comes from the word "" in proto-germanic "grimmaz" which means "to thunder".

You should have gone even further back. In its earlier versions Cinderella was quite the raunchy tale, because the part with the gold slippers is a bit of a mistranslation from old french. It was actually a fur slipper... and that was a euphemism for a not-too-hard-to-guess part of the female anatomy that a certain part of the prince had to fit into. :P

If you liked that one you will love the origin of the name "Rumpelstiltskin". In German he is known as "Rumpelstilzchen", but originally it was more like "Runzelstielchen" which roughly translates to "small wrinkly shaft" or come-on-you-know-what-I-mean. You will probably not be surprised to learn that the end of that fairy tale was slightly different, too. In younger retellings Rumpelstiltskin drives himself into the earth or explodes, but originally it was the queen who got plugged. Old fairy tales were often quite explicit before the Brothers Grimm recorded their PG-rated versions. :D

The glass/fur debate is mostly unfounded. Most scholars agree that glass was the intended material. First there is the matter that the "mistranslation" was verre (glass) versus vair (squirrel fur.) But squirrel fur was centuries out of fashion. Then there is the matter that glass was extremely expensive at the time, and could be seen as a magically luxurious item (think "diamond slipper".) Finally, Charles Perrault used the world verre (glass) in the story, written down. It's not like it was passed down orally. People are really looking for deeper meaning than there really is.
@shizanketsuga8696
@shizanketsuga8696 7 жыл бұрын
One could argue that the unusual fur type was meant to tip people off about the other meaning, but I am really not an expert on that matter and I read the book mentioning these oddities some 20 years ago. Anyway, it's always nice to see somebody else who is interested in strange stories like these. Cheers! :)

You know about Ye Xian, the Chinese equivalent of Cinderella? Regarding the story of Ye Xian, did you know about the ancient Chinese practice of foot binding? Apparently, young girls were made to go through this gruesome practice from early childhood onwards because small feet in women were considered the ultimate beauty trademark, especially if extremely ambitious parents wanted their daughters to be married off to wealthy husbands when they were old enough to do so, this was an era when matchmaking was relied on more often than today. The size of the women's feet were a heavily mentioned factor in the Cinderella tale, whichever version you hear. But it's the Chinese version that kinda provides something that makes you think.

As for why the glass slippers didn't disappear when the spell was broken at midnight in the Disney version, I also have a theory about that. They were clearly a parting gift from her Fairy Godmother. She knew that Cinderella lost one of her glass slippers as she fled the ball. She decided to use a little more magic to allow the slippers to remain, acting as a key to give Cinderella a chance at happiness, love & freedom.

Me and my little sister used to put on little "plays" of the original Rapunzel story and the original snow white (Because those were our favorites 😊) In fact I still have quite a few of the Grimm books!(:

Monroville It's called Aschenputtel (1989/2010). But in Germany there is also a different version/adaption of it, which I really love. That one is called Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel (1973).

Hi Jon: I liked your summation. These are ancient European fairy tales that originated from a much darker/violent time. Grimm's brothers tried to clean up a lot of these stories, and have a happy ending, and Disney also tried to do this. The shadow side of human personality comes out in these stories, as they are archetypal lessons. Hansel and Gretel is a story about cannibalism, another dark aspect of human behavior.

This version is in the “newish” movie called “Into The Woods” And has all the same parts but it has a little bit extra to connect it to the rest of the movie! (I love that movie❤️)

Cinderella is actually a very interesting story. Almost every culture around the world developed their own version of it, independently of one another. The message of persevering and and remaining kind in the face of adversity is transcendent of our cultures as humans.

The original sounds like a mix of the 1950 Disney one, the Disney live action remake, and the Cinderella side of the story in Into the Woods, which, again, is a Disney movie. Wow, Disney.

This version of the tale has a few familiar elements I have heard in other tales. The story of giving her tasks she couldn't complete but she gains help doing it sounds a lot like the story of Eros and Psyche from Roman times. I first heard a tale with Cinderella similarities that had a three-day festival in the Storyteller episode "Sapsorrow" which is based on the story "Allerleirauh". I think a lot of these old tales had numerous variations that existed across Europe, and the Grimm Brothers and a few other writers gathered up the versions they knew in their regions.

In every version I’ve heard her name was Ella and “Cinder-Ella” was a play on words since she slept near the cinders in the fireplace

Only in the English version. The German name is Aschenputtel. Asche is cinder, but puttel isn't a name or even a real word. It seems to have derived from "buddeln" which means (to) dig.

I believe that "Cinderella" came about by way of Charles Perrault, rather than the brothers Grimm. I remember reading that Cinderella's slippers were actually made out of fur. However, due to an error in translation from the original French text, Cinderella's slippers were recorded as being made out of glass.

To be honest, the first part of this story is almost exactly identical to the Into the Woods version of Cinderella. The tree, the lentils, the three-night festival, the burds, even the sap on the stairs. Even though the film wasn't completely about Cinderella, I much prefer it to the animated film and also remake as they clearly referred to the original tale a lot more (though obviously not all of it :P) Nice video! I absolutely love watching these!! SUBSCRIBER 495,576!

Not quite. The Cinderella story is actually the world's oldest fairy tale, with variations for pretty much every region in the world. It's so old, that it's impossible to tell which version came first. (There's a Chinese version where the gifts come from her dead father that was reincarnated as a talking fish, no lie.) The Brother's Grimm version that Jon talks about is called "Ashenputtel" and is probably the second most famous version of the story. The Cinderella story that Disney adapted is French in origin and actually not too different from the movie.

As much as I agree with you on the original ending being the one that should've been in the Disney movie, that would've meant the sisters wouldn't be in the sequels.
