I don’t hate Valentine’s Day- I just had parents who refused to celebrate it.🤷♀️ The two answers my parent’s usually gave people, to explain their feelings why, was basically….; *{1. If you need to be reminded to be romantic and show your partner how much you love them…then you’re clearly doing it wrong.}* *{2. If you surprise your partner with gifts or with romantic dates/gestures periodically throughout the year, it’s far more meaningful. Because it shows they were on your mind and you randomly wanted to do something special, to show how much you care/love them.* *Instead of it seeming like you’re just going through the motions and doing sweet things on the ONE day of the year that everyone else is…-making it appear like you’re only treating them special, because our culture peer pressured you into participating.}* 😆 Which I personally believe is a pretty compelling argument against it. 🤷♀️

When our daughter was living in Alaska, she had a boyfriend that actually asked her if she was expecting to get anything on Valentine’s Day. Every holiday is what you make of it. Hate Christmas because it's so commercialized? News flash: you don't have to participate in the commercialization! Same with valentines day. Don't like how you're "forced" to be romantic on one day of the year and "you should be romantic every day of the year", then... do it. No one is holding a weapon to your head forcing you to buy a card and chocolates and a dozen roses for your wife. Except maybe your wife. In which case, maybe do as she wants...

It’s interesting to note that it’s celebrated in Japan with gifts of chocolate. I don’t know if this came about due to Christian influence or westernization in general, but it’s been adopted there. The Japanese version of Christmas is also treated largely as a couples holiday, and is overshadowed compared to the New Year celebration. It occurs to me that the changing of Japanese traditions and the western influence on them might make for a great video.

I'd always heard that St. Valentine was a priest/monk who performed marriages for couples against the edict of an emperor who needed men for his armies; newly-married men weren't likely to sign-up, being newly-married, and signing-up for the army was also considered as a form of divorce, anyway, making getting married and *THEN* signing-up for the army redundant. St. Valentine was arrested when it was discovered that *HE* was the one disobeying the emperor's edit to ban any new marriages for the duration of the war he was waging.
@Alexandra-bp6cu2 жыл бұрын
This is the story I was told too but it went on that he got arrested for it and was sentenced to death. While in prison he fell in love with the warden‘s daughter and he would write letters to her and would sign them from your Valentine.

As a single person who has never been on a date in my life, I think it's weird that I like Valentine's Day. Like, it's supposed to be a day where you show people you love that you love them, and I think that should also extend to platonic love. It's just this little warm day in the cold winter of February where you can show people you care. I don't know, maybe because I don't have any romantic relationships in life I don't blow it out of proportion and just keep it small and simple.

As someone who was in Catholic school for 8 years, I've heard the two latter versions of St. Valentine discussed. I also remember a story that the origin of gifting valentines is when St. Valentine would drop notes about God's love a.k.a. Agape (if we're going by the 8 types of love as defined by Greek philosophers) to the blind girl he later cured, but since she was blind, he would prick the writing into violet petals or leaves (those must have been gigantic violets 🤣) like an archaic form of Braille. Real or fake, it was a super sweet story, and honestly, St. Valentine's Day was one of the happier days in Catholic school (unless it fell during Lent and we couldn't have any candies, then it was unfortunate, but we at least were nice to each other). I really wish people would use this day as a way to understand the various types of love, be it the 8 types of love that the Greeks gave us (that would be a really cool messed up origins video, just saying). Valentine's Day shouldn't just be about Eros, Ludus, Mania, or Pragma. Philia and Storge should be just as emphasized as any of the other types.

There are some people who believe that Valentine's Day was "made up" by the candy industry, in order to make even more money after Halloween and Christmas candy sales. In these politically correct times, in some schools Valentine's Day has been reinvented as Friendship Day. Also, when there are card exchanges between kids, no longer are they signed by the person giving the Valentine. This anonymity is to prevent hard feelings amongst the kids. Growing up in the 1960's, I have fond memories of classroom Valentine's Day parties, complete with goodies and those cards specifically designed for exchange between the kids. When I was a junior high and highschool student in the 1970's it was a thing to send either a "candy gram" or flowers to one's teenage sweetheart during class. The candy gram was usually a lollipop or a candy bar. The flowers were grown on campus by the horticulture class and was a way to raise funds for the horticulture program at my highschool. Another thing sold when I was in junior high was an "official" going together certificate. I never got one, but a few of my fellow Bell Junior High Trojans did. As a sentimental Mom for years I bought Valentine's cards, candy and stuffed animals for my kids. On that note, I'm hoping that the Solo household has a very happy St. Valentine's Day.💖💖💖💖

"Messed up origins" is an extremely interesting, well-researched and charmingly presented series, as I meant to write long ago before I had criticism. And it is very mild criticism I have now, bordering on insignificance, but the last name of 17th-century diarist, Samuel Pepys, is, for inscrutable reasons, pronounced "peeps". It's one of the "shibboleths" of English literature.

I live in Kansas City. Hallmark is still headquartered here and I know people who have modeled in their advertisements or recorded jingles for them.

Thanks for this excellent video; I hope it helps to correct some misconceptions about Valentine's Day and its origins. Would like to point out, though, that is is unlikely that Chaucer simply invented the story that birds seek their mates on February 14. Medieval and Renaissance people often associated natural phenomena with religious holidays (i.e. Candlemas and St. Swithin's day.) It does make some sense to associate birds with St. Valentine (whoever he may have been). There is, indeed, greater bird activity mid-February, although I don't know if our feathered friends are establishing territory or seeking this year's S.O. Hope you all have a great Valentine's Day, even if you're single like me.❤️

Thanks for watching and the kind words Millie! :) Just to clarify I didn’t say Chaucer made up the phenomenon about birds, just that he noticed it! Appreciate the insight regardless 🙏🏼

"Jesus being born in the spring". Actually, it was his cousin, John (The Baptist) who was born in the spring as evident of the Passover events around his birth. It was six months later, probably late October, early November, was when Jesus was born. Also evident of the festival (Feast of Tabernacles or Booths), a week long celebration, which prompted the Romans to take a census, since the Jewish people were coming from far away to Jerusalem and made it easier for Romans to do this. The Church (of that time) just bumped it up a couple of months to connect to the locals. Whats a few weeks?

The idea of Jesus being born in the spring is linked to the idea that that is when lambs are born and that is the time of year when shepherds keep watch by night over their flocks in the field in case a ewe needs assistance giving birth. During the rest of the year, shepherds go home to bed at night and leave the dogs to guard the flocks.

Idk about you guys but I LOVE Valentine’s Day, the aesthetic is so elegant, the food is AMAZING, the activities are fun, and I’m a romantic. Also I get to spend the whole day eating candy with my friends and talk about webtoon comics. I really don’t understand why people hate being single on Valentine’s. Like ya it sucks seeing everyone partnered up but if you’re creative you can still have fun

Hahaha! Loved this video. I used to hate this holiday with a vengeance, but now that my love and I are getting married, we still don't really plan to do anything on Valentine's day. We're doing our lovey-dovey stuff either before or after that day. Even though I love my fiancé with all my might, I'd be seriously pissed at him if he drained his account on me.

9:19 - 9:33 Growing up in the Catholic School system, we were taught that a Roman emperor banned the institute of marriage and that a priest named Valentine who preached Christianity was marrying couples in secret. The emperor (of course) found out about it and had the priest arrested & executed. His feast day was celebrated on Feb. 14th. I think the rest of what you said in the time stamp rings true with what we were taught.
