Frankly, it's your videos on the music industry and not the reactions that got me hooked on your channel. There are a ton of people reacting to music and while I appreciate that you bring your own perspective to the reactions, reactions by you tend to get lost in a sea of other reactors. Your perspective on the music industry and how touring works (particularly for smaller bands) is pretty much unique. Whether or not I watch your next reaction video to Lorna Shore or Spiritbox or whatever, you can bet that if you put out one of your takes on the music industry, I'll definitely watch that.

Same here. I don't even bother with any reaction videos by any people. The only reaction to music that matters to me is my own. I don't need someone else to tell me what I like or dislike. The music industry videos are interesting to me because that's a subject I wouldn't know about otherwise, since I'm not in the music business.

Usually if I don't know the song I'll watch it on youtube first, then watch the reaction. A first time listen can definitely be dampened by the pausing and talking over the music, but I really like the other perspective on it. Plus, I enjoy trying to guess which parts will illicit the best reaction from the content creator reacting to it.

My Metal channel is essentially dead but I still love posting metal music reviews. I did get a comment once that "Metal was getting too negative" so he doesn't watch to many metal videos outside of his own playlist. But I will say, life has spun up the turbo on many people just not hanging out on KZbin as much - also and more so, algorithm changes by YT has been a big change to "reaction" results. A lot of the problem is YT makes it a popularity contest. Then they give you a reward, the more popular you are, then screw you over by changing the rules, so you have to try harder in the popularity contest, to get the rewards you were getting before, then they screw you over by changing the rules again. And it turns in to a rise and repeat, because you have to chase the numbers. It's no wonder people get burn out. There is a small UK youtuber, who quit, he put up a video stating the reasons, burnout, it had become a full time job, which he did not was, as he already had one, and it was not fun any more. Then 6 month later he came back, as part of him missed it, But he was not going to play YT game any more, he was going to do, want he wanted, when he wanted. And no longer cared about the money from YT. He is still going today, and if a video only get 50 views, he's not bothered, because he's enjoying himself again. There are people out there, myself included, that will watch your videos, because it's you. So I say take a break, stop playing the game, and when/if you come back, do what you want to do, like the small unsigned bands, as there is no point in playing a fixed game, that's going to make you ill in some way, just to feed a big machine that does not care about you, just the money.

It's really just the way a majority of channels that focus solely on one thing go. There's only so much that can be said and that can be done with one particular subject. People's interests change, both on the content creation and on the consumption side. It's similar to many gaming youtube subgroups and you often can spot particular niches dying out en masse. It happened to Minecraft youtube, WoW youtube, and to many more. As a creator, if you don't branch out at some point you're either gonna burn yourself out or become irrelevant when your audience moves on from your niche and you can't get enough new blood in. With music genres it's obviously different on the latter part than for games due to the difference in 'shelf life' but the overall principle still stands. What's going on in metal youtube rn is by no means unique and the lessons are already known.

I mean, Tank, my understanding is you started youtube during the pandemic because you weren't working, because no one was touring and you're a touring tech. Now that people are touring, you have other work to do. So, you're kinda in the situation where you went from one job, to a different job, to now trying to decide if you want to simultaneously do two jobs. A little bit of burnout makes total sense.

The problem with making a job out of your hobby is that eventually it becomes a job. And on KZbin there's a lot of behind the scenes stuff that a lot of people overlook, as well as the way KZbin works makes it necessary to work too hard to get a steady paycheck. The problem with reactions is also that you can't explore stuff on your own time. You're kinda forced to stay behind the curve. If it's music or even series or movies, you can't watch it the moment it comes out, you need to make sure you're filming it (which makes it even worse for movies since you can't watch it in theatres). You're basically setting yourself back in order to get paid. I mean, you can't even buy a CD of a band you like, simply because it deprives you of content to react to. It becomes a chore, and that's what kills motivation.

Before watching the whole video, I do have an opinion. I think there is a general burnout because, again in my opinion, metal today sounds pretty much the same and generic. How many times do we hear metal songs with the same style breakdowns and chugs and vocals. Metal when I was growing up all had distinct styles that you could hear and have different reactions too. You could hear Slipknot sounded like Slipknot, Mudvayne sounded like Mudvayne, SOAD sounded like SOAD, and so on. Now it just mostly feels and sounds the same

I understand it. as a consumer of all forms of music (mostly country music and all XCore's of metal) i don't have much time to even watch this kind of content, anymore because i'm too busy working all day every day to feed myself and pay the bills. it's like we're all running out of time to consume content while keeping our lives in check. i'm glad that you are being open about creating it, Tank. been a fan for years and i will continue to be a fan of your content and I will continue to watch it for as long as your put it out there. shout out to Finn, too. i absolutely understand why he decided to start backing off of content creation. all i want for anyone anywhere is that they are happy doing what they do and if they aren't feeling it much anymore, i want them to be able to drop out of it without people trashing them over it. we all have a life outside of youtube and y'all creators are put under way too much pressure by people who feel like they are entitled to your content. it's absolutely absurd to think that this or that creator owes anything to viewers. y'all don't owe us anything at all. i've always viewed the creators of content i enjoy watching as if they are doing a lot of work for not much gain. to simplify it, i have always considered content creators to be doing a favor for their viewers by putting that content out there. watching burned-out creators is a bummer because it becomes obvious to viewers that the content is being made as a "chore" instead of for "fun!". i'm in full support of creators who decide to take a step back or even quit entirely. I just want everyone to be happy with their life, at the end of the day. Much love to you, Tank! 👊

Honestly there is no mystery or originality because the millions of music related KZbinrs beat this dead horse to death….. its like the same stuff, music is released, got the reactors and reviewers, then covers just the same scripts over and over, so not only is people listening to the songs and albums, they get a million youtubers spewing the same 💩 about them causing the magic to fade quickly. Then the gear review side is even worse because it comes out and just everyone is talking about the same thing for weeks which to me is so not genuine because almost all the time they were given or paid to say stuff, just to clarify, not all but most…. This has been going on for years! I love heavy music and will continue to, but i find just going back to discovering these new bands and artists without all of the “recommendations” at least preserves the magic, mystery, and excitement of it….. youtubers would like to think they are helping the scene but they honestly drained it dry, for their benefit

I know this isn't the topic but since you mentioned Nightwish fans I just wanted to say this: All the hateful things said or done (like reporting videos) is exclusively done by so called Nightwish Army, this cult-like mentality hub of regional groups who bring loads of views, only to reactors who only glorify Floor and Tuomas etc. They are not true representatives of Nightwish fans. They probably have more hate towards Tarja than Amy Lee. I know you're not the biggest Evanescence fan, lol, but I honestly don't think Floor needs any quality boost by talking shit about others. And not just talking... the NW Army reported many Evanescence reactions as harmful or dangerous content, saying the song gave them suicidal thoughts. It's not funny. They pollute genuine reactions and give those very few reactors who aren't their puppets, so much trouble. They aren't the only ones of course. Between the fandom cults and metal gate-keepers, reactions are simply doomed. One side demands blind worship, the other will hardly admit any new music is worth mentioning. But, even that is acceptable as long as you don't go into borderline illegal defamatory rants. Apologies for this digression, but I consider myself also a Nightwish fan, and I don't like when NW Army speaks for all. I have one last thing to say, Floor had ample opportunities to say something to the Army over their behavior online, asked even by "regular" fans, and nothing. Not a word. Maria Brink and Lzzy Hale would've said something. Why I have utmost respect for them.

It's just the nature of both content creation and music in general isn't it... It's all fashion and when that trend changes, as a content creator (or business of any kind) you also have to change with trends or you'll become obsolete or a tiny niche. Metal KZbin has been riding a wave and we all love it, but things have probably reached saturation point and it will absolutely die off a little, then likely come back again in a few years. Your channel is about Tank, not just metal and that's key. You have a loyal audience and they'll stick with you regardless of if/how you pivot in your content to maintain channel growth. I really appreciate and respect the fact you're actually IN the industry and can give professional insight which 99.9% of reactors can't. I admit to being a snob with reactors and content creators, I need to know what that person is doing/has done in their life to speak with authority and think they should be heard and taken seriously. You're a great guy, a credible voice and source of info and opinion so you're stuck with me I'm afraid!

I really think metal is more innovative more than ever before. I grew up on the darker songs of Sabbath, and now there's doom, sludge, stoner, and lots of subcategories. Possible interesting fact for you: when I first came to your channel, it was because of the mass at one of the festivals. I can’t remember the name of it now sorry. But it was the one that they allegedly closed for the weather because it was a big storm the day before you were even there I think. That was with Electric Callboy and everything went wrong. I’m sure you remember which one it is. Anyway, since my son was going to a festival here in Florida the Rockville festival I asked him about that and he said yeah that one was a real big mess, even though he hadn’t gone there.but he said that Rockville has always been really good and very organized. I don’t worry about him in the festivals anyway because he knows what he’s doing. But I had just been curious about the whole thing. Festivals weren’t that complicated in my day. I've liked and followed tanks content for a long time. I've had so much fun discovering new music with him or waiting to see how he'd react to songs I like. Seeing him out on tour when I saw EC was a really cool experience. The thing I'm sick of, and this is NOT specific to tank alone, is content creators complaining about burnout. Its painfully repetitive and it happens every... single... time. Find a content creator, follow them, enjoy the content and then after enough time they put out a video or MULTIPLE videos about how burned out they are or how not fun it is anymore. I think its past time for anyone going into content creation to understand *going in* that at some point they'll get tired of it, expect it and when it happens just choose NOT to put out another video about how tired they are of it. Its 2024 now, this is the reality of being a CC. This is the reality of a job in content creation. I'm tired of my job every single day, most people are. Maybe content creation was NEVER a way to financially support yourself forever. Maybe it was only ever a part time gig. You have to choose. Make a video for fun and enjoyment or pump content for revenue. You can do both but once its more work than fun then its time to find another way to monetize yourself and just go back to doing videos for fun and enjoyment without complaining about the algorithm. Love ya Tank, hope you can find some time and motivation to give us some new reactions when it suits you.

Constructive, intelligent discussions about the music industry, some behind the scenes touring stuff that are actually fun, interesting and educational (young ppl starting to understand that the variety of jobs available in music, entertainment, touring sectors) is your niche. Quality over quantity, don’t worry about the algorithm- subscribed viewers will continue to watch your channel. Happy to wait weeks for new content from your channel. Life is coming back full force after the pandemic. Fishing for clicks instead of doing what content you really want to do sounds draining. Pressure to create instead of a desire to create is never fun. I can't blame creators for taking a hiatus for as long as they need to recharge or reinvent. Was on board till hearing that only covering the biggest bands is worth making content for. I've been at this 13 years, almost a thousand interviews in my career, countless album reviews with 351 this year alone. I don't care if I get 1 view, 100 views, 1000 views or a million views; I'm only going to make content I want to do. I'm not going to cover stuff I don't care about like drama, dirty laundry, negativity, or covering music I don't like. If your goal is to be the biggest *insert style* youtuber, unless your heart is into sensationalism, engagementbaiting, trend hopping" you're going to burn yourself out as you're doing stuff you don't want to do. And not covering small bands? Fine, don't. I and others will. I have the passion for it and if it helps them just that much more, that's what matters to me. Also this is clearly about money as you keep bringing it up. It's about the engagement, the sensationalism as that what sells. If you truly didn't care about the money aspect, while the transparency is nice, it's not a driving force for anyone other than trying to make it a job or a side gig. I got 1K views on my videos today and that improved my day immensely. I coveted what I want to cover and some checked it out. Anything more than that should be a bonus, not a requirement.

And that's awesome that you're enjoying what you're doing. If at the end of the day you're happy, that's all that matters. I never said I wasn't into covering smaller bands, I said the sad reality is that most viewers do not care, and you can see it in the numbers. For me, it's not all about the money on KZbin because I'm also touring full time and make income there; but if you want to keep your channel relevant, you have to make content that your viewers want to watch, and you have to have content that is going to be engaging that the algorithm will push. IF, that is, you are trying to grow your channel, which I am. For me, if I didn't care about my channel growing at all, then why even have one? I started during the pandemic and have had a blast doing it, and while I don't devote my full time to it anymore, I still want to do it and I want the channel to grow, so that maybe some day I CAN feature all those small bands and people will actually watch. The proof is in the numbers. What I'm about to say may super butthole-ish but I PROMISE you I don't mean it to be... You said you've been at this for 13 years, and you only want to do what you want to do, including covering smaller bands. You have 1k subscribers. THAT, right there, proves that if you want your channel to grow, you have to at least consider making the content that the viewers want, and not the content that you want. And that creates a nasty balance at times, and is kinda the sucky hard truth of content. I do only create the content I want to at this point, but at the same time, I have to consider what the viewers are going to actually watch, at least in my case because I'm actually trying to grow my channel. Going back to you, if you're stoked on your content and it's fulfilling, and you don't care about the numbers, then that's awesome and that's all that matters.

I guess I just don't have it in me to phone it in. I know some can, some can create drama and controversy over something they don't care about so it doesn't affect then, I'm nit that guy. When I interview a band, I couldn't care less about the drama, dirty laundry, etc. I want to have a good conversation with them. Make them happy they spent time talking to me. I'll get the occasional blabbermouth article covering an interview I did, and I'm grateful when it happens when there's new eyes on what I do but I didn't put in the clickbait to get it to happen, nor do I want to. I leave that to the metal dirtsheet channels. Which again goes back to what I'm saying, you have to want to give what the lowest common denominator wants (which is 9/10 times controversy) and I have never wanted to be known for that. I want to show people good heavy and heavy adjacent music and when an interview opportunity comes up, I take full advantage of it because whomever does stumble on my stuff enjoys it. I rarely get shit talking comments, it's almost all praise. That means more to me than a toxic comment section. I know I'll never be as big as you or others, while I do similar, I also do something different for those that want it. And hey, I have more subscribers than my hometown, that was the only goal I had youtube wise. Otherwise, I've gotten to talk to almost all my musical heroes. Just 3 left in the bucket list. I'm creatively satisfied and those that check my stuff are as well, even if not in the tens of thousands or more of views. Which I bring up again. It's between being creatively happy and making money. It's not often you can do both and when you can, you made it. But the more that you take compromises and do videos you don't care about, that's how burnout and feeling unfulfilled happens. If the money is worth it, cool, but that means you're in it for the money. And to go back to it again with my original first point. No one knows what band is going to blow up, so why not support what you enjoy? You could be the one that breaks them into the next level. And you specifically have the audience and respect to make that happen. Showing off one lesser known band could easily help skyrocket them. It just takes one person. Am I out of touch? Maybe, possibly, probably. But I get to talk to my musical heroes, I get shown off in the album critic reviews that bands put together when a new release is out and I am creatively happy. I probably suck at marketing what I do as well, but I do believe there is an audience for what I do and I gain subscribers every week. I wouldn't trade talking about what I think is an incredible band to cover a band I have no interest in, but fake it for views for anything. You got the numbers, do what you actually want to do.

I'm sitting here thinking that I don't remember the last time I didn't watch a video of yours when they came up. I really like Nik - he's introduced me to so much - but you are always talking about something that catches my attention. I don't sub to a lot (I do watch a ton of videos), but you've earned a sub from me. You don't have to put out daily videos, or even weekly, as long as you keep having the kind of quality I enjoy. I'm an old metalhead - got into metal in my teens, back in the 70s, but fell out of it with hair metal. It was Slipknot that dragged me back in, with their first album. I guess I'm a little out of the loop in my 60s, but not so badly since I discovered Nik and you. Thanks!
