Probably the most interesting product in coffee for a while. Also, the founder seems very approachable and down to earth, which bodes well for the future. Especially when comparing to others, namely John and Weber. Finally, as a software engineer, the fact that the software is already so polished intrigues me even more.

17:44 Funny, I was just thinking about brew temperatures, my old Rocket E61 HX machine had the boiler PID set to 120c by default and said that would give you about 200f (93c) brew temperature at the group. My Current ECM dual Boiler E61 machine I believe the PID setting is supposed to give you the actual brew temperature or that's what it's designed to estimate anyway (PID is still setting the boiler temperature but has an offset based on their testing on how much temperature loss you get while the water travels from the boiler to the brew group, it might be 10c loss or whatever, and they factor that calculation in) that's my understand of it anyway. I tested with an E61 group thermometer and found the Setting of 200f on the PID would give me about 196f max brew temperature, 198f more like 193-194, which You'd think is too cool, but the thing is, even with light roasts the coffee still turns out good. I know Decent brand machines their default temperature is lower, like 91c I believe which is about 196f, So I'm wondering what is the actual brew temperature most people are brewing at? The 85c /185f brew temperature here seems pretty low, why would you say it didn't need that hot of a temperature with this type of brewer?

I am really excited about this machine! Since Kickstarter is only in March you have time to look at the condensation, the patent worries, the declining tem profile, etc. I would love a plumb-in option so only a 1/4" line with an electronically controlled valve to fill the reservoir in an integrated way. This would remove the pour-over step and leave only the frothing on the side.

If this thing delivers, it's a Catch and my Dream machine. I have a flair pro 2 since 3 years and I haven't pulled more enjoyable shots even on much more expensive or sophisticated machines. Sometimes it's just a Hassel to heat up everything, and the cleanup involved. Basically a flair with automatic kettle and automatic water refill would be my dream machine. Notes to the DeV: include a flow profiler for your machine that I can put into my flair. I then create my favorite profile the way I pull it on a real manual lever and then plug it into your machine which does the same but automatic. I'd spent more than 1k on that ^^
@BensCoffeeRants2 жыл бұрын
Do you have to release the excess water if you're planning on doing multiple shots? Can you just wait for pressure to die down and then top it off the water for the next shot? Or it needs to push through all the water to release the pressure.

What components require cleaning and replacement, how often, and how easy to manage? I love the integrated scale! Needs to be a trend in machines. I love that it’s quiet! The simplicity of it means less to go wrong. I see no reason it can’t include a water tank to eliminate the water pouring, but not a big deal. It will depend on the price point and footprint if a reservoir is added. Thanks for the preview! PS They need to embed this video on their site.

I still use a Cafelat Robot because I love the customisable piston pressure and feel that I get. This seems like the next upgrade. A few big concerns for me though is the condensation above the water boiler - it needs a spout big time, maybe a turnable one that opens in one position when pouring then turn to close. It will also prevent dirt, dust, critters, etc. getting in there when not in use. Also, Temperature stability is not imo a selling point in all respects. I want my temp at the puck to drop throughout the shot, that's the 'lever profile'. I can see this being relatively easy to do. Lastly, the height of the portafilter above the cup is a bit much. Three smaller things - we saw flow rate profiling, but does it do pressure profiling too? That's far more important to me. What is clean-up like? Once you take the portafilter off, how much water comes out? How easy is it to clean the water boiler and the piston? Serviceability - how easy is it to replace the scales if/when they break, replace seals, upgrade software, and all that stuff that allows this to be used or 10+ years. That's a lot of money for a coffee machine and must be addressed if you want me to buy this. Look at Decent, when I buy that machine, I'm guaranteed that it can be serviced, fixed and upgraded thoughout it's entire life.
@FahimAzizBackpacker2 жыл бұрын
great questions.
@caenorstfuji2 жыл бұрын
since the portafilter is the only exit, I believe pressure can be mathematically deduced from flow

I'm pretty sure a lot of your questions are addressed in this video. You might have missed it but they do discuss the condensation issue briefly (planning on adding a fan I think). They also talk about servicing and cleaning as well. They even mention that it can do both pressure profiling and flow profiling.

@BensCoffeeRants2 жыл бұрын
Good question, it doesn't seem like it does currently but I wonder if it could. Seems good even if it just has a single stable temperature. I heard from someone with a Decent machine who's experimented with rising or falling temperature profiles that a straight temperature worked best. But that's just one persons experience so who knows. Would be fun to play around with that and experiment.

If this could do something like Scott Rao’s filter 2.0 profile, this could replace someone’s whole setup for a very reasonable price. Wonder if you could do sprover by just continuously pouring water into the funnel.
@BensCoffeeRants2 жыл бұрын
I don't think you can continuously add water since it seems to have a step where it sucks the water down into the brew chamber and pressurizes that. But 150ml or 200ml or whatever they're increasing it to, is likely more than anyone would need for an espresso machine. I'm not a fan of the Spro-Over type things, more of a ristretto type guy.
@marcusannegarn84972 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same! Spro-overs are my absolute favourite way to make coffee. I personally find a simple 4ml flow with an 18:200 more forgiving than the Rao Filter recipe
@BensCoffeeRants2 жыл бұрын
Looks very nice and promising! Nice if we're finally getting a good profiling / smart espresso machine for a decent price. One down side of going with a thinner brew chamber might be that it will end up getting hotter on the outside, being less insulated maybe. That's one down side of the typical lever machines like La Pavoni Europiccola. The display on the machine looks beautiful but maybe could be larger or maybe switch between modes if that's possible, like just show the weight scales numbers (so that it's larger) until it detects water being added and switches to brew mode or something.

Looks really interesting. The design is much nicer than a Decent in my opinion (and matches well with the Weber Key grinder). It's also a lot quieter. It would be great if they could offer a lever add-on to attach to the top of the machine, so that one could pull a shot interacting with the machine as if it was a traditional lever, though with a lot less effort since the lever isn't directly linked to the piston and just translates lever motion to pressure. It would be like upgrading from a car with non-power-assisted steering to power-assisted.
