In this video, students from SPA 211 (Spring 2016) discuss the current status of Spanish in Miami and they explore how the Miami Spanish dialect is present in young speakers. They include interviews with Miami families and they survey vocabulary differences among them.

The experiment is overlooking that a lot of the kids born in Miami aren't saying different words because they have learned a new dialect but simply because they don't know enough Spanish so they just say the English equivalent in a Spanish accent.

Excelente proyecto. Soy criado en Miami desde los 13 años y después de andar con amigos de distintos países más el inglés siempre noté como nuestro español en común era más común que distinto. Note ese cambio y tuve full curiosidad de cómo creamos nuestro propio acento en español Miamense. Gran estudio! Ojalá pudieran investigar más al respecto.

really interesting, when you speak Spanish in Miami some times you might select a specific word depending on the nationality of the person too. a rag for instance I would call it a paño to a Cuban person and a trapo to others

jaja "plantear"... Recordemos que en español sí existe el verbo "plantar" como sinónimo de "sembrar". O sea que en este caso no había necesidad de hacer un préstamo lingüítico. ;)

Es que no son exactamente sinónimos. Plantar es para árboles, arbustos, plantas. Sembrar es para semillas o simientes como la patata. A la semilla dentro de la fruta no se le suele llamar semilla, aunque sea correcto. Se le suele llamar pepa, pepita... En inglés, al menos británico, dicen pip si está en la fruta y seed si la vas a sembrar. Pero en inglés existe el verbo sembrar: sow. El problema es que todo el mundo lo usa mal en ambos idiomas y dicen to plant y plantar aunque no sean exactamente iguales que to sow y sembrar. Es que mi padre es de campo.

I'd say Central and South American dialects include lots of features from their original indigenous languages, and sometimes mix with historically related immigrant languages (such as Italian in the Rio de la Plata area or Dutch in the Caribbean islands). Spanish from Spain takes influence from the other historical languages existing within the country (Catalan, Euskera, Galician, Valencian...) and the differences between each region's dialect can be pretty big. And the Miami one... well, I haven't really known anyone from Miami, but it seems to have a lot of Cuban dialect influence as I've seen in this video.

Did you know that Spanish is not a dialect? Dialect is different that Spanish. I am bilingual, I speak my Indigenous language we called Triqui, Spanish, and now I'm learning how to speak in English as well. English is so difficult to me and is a little complicated learn another language because is not mine.

Muchos lingüistas no apoyarían tu opinión. Las lenguas evolucionan según su entorno. En años recientes con el fácil acceso a Internet en Latinoamerica, se ha visto que muchos jóvenes han estado adoptando jergas y frases de países muy distintos al propio. Ningún dialecto es puro y cada uno tiene la misma validez, el español de 2da generación en los Estados Unidos es su dialecto propio en ambos idiomas. El chicano (tanto español o inglés) utiliza como base una lengua e inserta palabras o frases traducidas del otro al base, mismo sucede en el "miamense" y otros dialectos latinos en los Estados Unidos y Canadá. Esto es producto del diglosia y el "code-switching".
