Comcept consists of AAA devs, though. Undertale was made while Toby was studying at college and did not have high quality requirements for most of its parts. Shovel Knight ran out of money and the devs spent something like six months in crunch. All that said, MN9 sounds like it was badly mismanaged. Was it 10 simultaneous platform releases? Madness for such a small studio. Did online coop make it in? Another huge headache. Net code requires a lot of effort to figure out. Doing it with little hassle probably requires an expensive programmer, and skimping on talent in this area usually ends up being very expensive in terms of delays and knock-on effects from what I understand.

Weird that you didn't bring up *Skullgirls* when talking about indie games that used crowdfunding... 1) It's an indie title that was made by a team of 10 or 12, it wasn't a solo effort. 2) It got into a crowdfunding campaign (Indiegogo) to expand the roster and get better versions 3) It took the time it needed to release the next characters 4) They ported the game to multiple platforms 5) They had issues with publishers... including Konami... 6) On Steam, they asked the people' help using betas to balance the characters IMO, that's how an indie team should handle crownfunding stuff...

+Angry Nerd Bird - "It weirds me out that people say Yooka Laylee was a screw-up, when that game is EXACTLY what was promised" - I'd argue that's a very subjective statement, though; the recent release of Dead Cells shows how you can have a game be a return to nostalgic formula and yet make allowances for modern innovations or developments. What was promised with Yooka-Laylee was a spiritual successor. But what nobody expected was for that game to effectively be a step backwards into an older style rather then a *continuation* of the series' legacy.

I feel sorry for all the Mega Man fans who were let down by this, I have a friend I remember being so excited about it when it got announced, it sucks that it turned out this way. I was never really interested in Mighty No.9, never played a Mega Man game, I have backed Bloodstained though and stuff like this about Kickstarter projects does come off as worrisome! I played the Backer Demo though the other day and enjoyed what was there, so I'm still pretty optimistic!

Well - kickstarter is exacly that - you put not your money, but your reputation on the line. If you create a bad game for your or your publisher's money - you still can get a second chance. If you so spectaculary fail a kickstarter succsess - it's almost impossible to get you reputation back from that. Espesially not with "it's better then nothing" attitude.

@sosasees5 жыл бұрын
Mighty Number 9 is a Kickstarter case study of what NOT to do: 1. Don't increase ambitions when you unexpectedly get much more money than you asked for. Just do what you promised and don't add anything new to the todo list, unless you're ABSOLUTELY sure what you're doing (Maybe add one or two things you want to do extra, but don't do them & don't promise them unless you've done all the other things you've promised) 2. Don't run multiple simultaneous Kickstarters for different projects. Finish one project and then start the next. 3. Don't make unexpected overhauls. Since you've already spent much of your limited Kickstarter time on the thing you've done before the overhaul, your overhauled thing is likely bound to be worse than the thing that you did before the overhaul. 4. Don't make stretch goals for porting your game to every single system under the sun. Instead, wait until it sold well enough to get ported to the other systems. Focussing on less game systems will drastically improve the quality of your game.
@RubianGaming8 жыл бұрын
Jim you didn't also mention the scandal a few years ago when Comcept hired a community manager who is her own words "had never played Mega Man and wasn't really a fan". Then people found out she got the job purely because she was dating one of the higher ups. then when people started to criticize MN9 on the fan forums she deleted those posts as the community manager and never reported the criticism to her superiors. The she was promoted to an extra artist and started pitching concept art with self insert art of herself into the game. People were pissed.

The 'only got a job because she was dating someone' was admitted to be untrue and retracted (the internet detective admitted he couldn't even find evidence she was dating either), EncyclopediaDramatica keeps it up for the lulz though. The alleged mass bannings were not Dina's choice alone (they had to be approved by someone else), they had to be approved by others. And she left in 2015.

Prom Night: The final party at the end of High School in the USA. It is tradition that the students come as a couple. Add to that the stereotype that Anime fans have no Real Life girlfriends, so they do not have anybody to go with on this important night. The result is that they cry. I suggest you take a look at some teenage comedy movies from the 1980s. It seems that most of them have the plot "how the protagonist gets a girl for Prom Night".
@surlyandroid8 жыл бұрын
Prom is a popular school dance in the U.S.
@OriginalPiMan8 жыл бұрын
It's a semiformal social event held by many American high schools involving dancing and music. The general expectation on students is that they bring a date, a feat that stereotypical anime fans are not capable of. Watch almost any sitcom set in an American high school and there will be an episode with prom night or a similar event; even many movies with American high schools have it.

"Shortchange" - THAT's the word I was looking for once I saw the disappointment bleed all over the Internet, and finally it hit me. No four hour half-assed "thank you" crawl in the credits is going to fix that. Backers were shortchanged because they didn't get their money's worth; that's the core of the drama. If a sequel of better quality squeezes out of Comcept in the future it'd be no more than what Blackwell said: Inafune cleaning up his own mess doesn't make him a visionary.

Looking back at this 7 years later, this is still one of the great episodes. In the time between the upload of this video and now; Capcom has made a huge comeback and made a brand new Mega Man game and a few collections of the big titles. Playtonic made a Donkey Kong Country like game out of partially failed Yooka-Laylee game. And Chinese developer Fuze went under being absorbed back into it's parent company and were about to acquire the entirety of Comcept until Level-5 bought them out making them a mobile gaming subsidiary of their company. Personally, I feel pretty good knowing Inafune almost got what was coming to him (fuck around and find out, amirite?). What I feel even better about is that Capcom is now free from the person who was ruining the company from the inside and restoring faith in it's playerbase.
