Wonderful!!! What a beautiful and moving performance of this song. It is slower than usually taken but Valarie Masterson has the control to make it work! WOW!

She gives a little glance DIRECTLY into the camera on her penultimate not "and"... I. Absolutely perfectly executed. Wow!

Yes - here is a "Yum-Yum" who really lives up to her stage name! If memory serves, she was equally yummy, and even more youthful, in the 1966 Doyly Carte film.

Sublime! How come I never knew Valerie Masterson's beautiful voice and performance when I was 14 years old in 1966? Because I only knew Julie Andrews, my ideal then. I only knew Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, never heard of G&S til I was 15, and then I fell in love, and sang Poor Wandering One and other HMS Pinafore and Pirates of Penzance soprano arias. But The Mikado escaped me until quite recently. Valerie Masterson! Oh, she was sublime!

Thank you for your comment. I was lucky enough to meet Valerie a few years ago and can confirm that she is just as lovely in person as she is in performance.

Wow! This version is a challenge of breath control. I'll let Valerie Masterson teach me how - and how slowly!

I really do like this version and the artist is beyond marvellous at perfecting all the qualities of delivering vocal perfection. However the only thing that was nagging at me was that I'm used to hearing this song sung a little faster, and so i felt it was dragging..even though I was so very much appreciating the qualities I was hearing BECAUSE it was being performed slower than I am used to hearing it. Oh well, lol!

Yes, I'm liking Valerie Masterson as Yum-Yum. Wish there was a DVD and CD of this BBC production from 1973. I can't seem to find any products for purchase online. :(

I sang this when I played Yum-Yum, in my school's production of The Mikado, of course, it was an all-boys school.

1973 BBC studio production. Can be found complete elsewhere on KZbin, each act in a separate post. Wonderful cast -- including Heather Begg, Ian Wallace, Richard Angas and Derek Hammond-Stroud -- excellent conductor (David Lloyd-Jones) and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra!
