Progress ABSOLUTELY beats perfectionism. I have this mantra of " *Something is better than nothing* " and it has worked wonders for building good habits and learning new things. Before that I said "If I'm doing it, I should do it perfectly" and I just failed at getting any better. But once I shifted my mindset, it was all suddenly a lot easier to get healthy, work out, learn a new language, etc.

But if progress “absolutely” beats perfectionism, wouldn’t it have perfected the arts of perfectionism thus creating a paradox ?
@yahyawasim1994
@yahyawasim1994 3 жыл бұрын
@@M87-o3n I like how you think funny man ;-). But nah, progress doesn't perfect the art of perfectionism because progress may be tangible but not fixed in its outcome, i.e. perfect, by virtue of result and definition. The perception of this paradox is subjective to how one perceives perfectionism to begin with - if you think perfectionism is absolute just like in what I've said above, then approaching progress > perfection may be incredibly difficult, since at least with perfectionism 100% is complete by a fixed time variable, if not an outcome-based variable as with progress (where 80% by a fixed time is OK).

I honestly believe self-improvement should be a subject in school. It would be a subject wherein pupils learn how to learn, learn how to be honest about their bad and their good parts and learn to become more self-confident by not seeing your bad things as a lack, but more as something to improve on.

Great video! Some words to really think about: " I felt like I wasn't a good... because this thing did not come to me effortlessly, when in fact the answer is that I was not a good... because I didn't put effort into the thing" and "progress is more important than perfection" - Ali Abdaal

reading this currently! love the difference between growth mindset vs fixed mindset! What I've discovered is that people could also have both depending on the situation. You could have a fixed mindset about your personality, eg: I don't think I can change my anger issues. But could have growth mindset when it comes to building a skill such as in Ali's case - I can type faster or I can have bigger biceps than Matt D'avela 😛

This is so true! There's a lot of nuance to this idea, and it's great to realize that there could still be areas of your life where we're still in a fixed mindset, or maybe have switched back to a fixed mindset (something I realized I struggled with with my business during the pandemic).

Great video Ali. The power of reframing and the word “YET” is life changing. Reframe from “I don’t know how to do this” to “I don’t know how to do this YET”. We also need to get past our fear of judgement or we may not even try the first attempt. Wanting to be perfect on our first go, or being worried people will laugh holds many people from their own potential greatness.

I might be the only few around here who relate this book to anime series Re:Zero; Season 2. When I read the Light Novel (prior to being adapted into Season 2), I suddenly remember this book when it talks about Subaru and their parents. The author definitely know about this mindset side of thing, since he (Tappei Nagatsuki) can potray the child Subaru really well. The once great and outgoing Subaru who is great in almost anything, becomes incapable of doing anything anymore because he can't meet their parents expectation (or so he thought his parents wanted him to be). This is called a "Gifted Child Syndrome". It's devastating. And I'm sure that a lot of people can really relate to this within their childhood. Me included. Subaru's Mom: "We didn't have you because we wanted you to do something for us. We had you because we wanted to do something for you." _When I read this chapter, I literally cried for the first time in a long time. And it's from a Light Novel. So that's just great._

As an English teacher in Asia, I see it all the time: students too afraid to ask a question for fear of what others will think of them. It hurts everyone. If someone does raise their hand and make a mistake, I tell them "good mistake". At first, the student is confused, but then (over time) they slowly get braver. BTW, I need to say that to myself as well.

Amazing book about learning and the journey it requires to be great at something…..or in Josh’s case, the BEST at two things.

Love the point on how much we value effort… and it’s so true that before anything becomes effortless and seemingly “natural” to us, for the vast majority of people, we first need to have put effort into it. Even if you were born with natural talent, if you don’t put in the effort to hone it daily, you’ll eventually lose that talent anyway. 👍

Definitely really powerful working on Mindset. We have to start with our mindset to change our lives. If we are stuck in "we can't, it's impossible" mindset then that's exactly what will be delivered. If we move to anything is possible, and we just need to create actions every day towards it then, we start seeing results.

That is an exceptional summary @aliabdaal. Thanks for sharing. I loved that you shared that we may have a growth mindset in some parts of our life but still fixed in others. So true and super interesting

I have literally been watching your videos since 9am EST. I typed in Drake to listen to his new album and somehow your stuff popped up and I have not been able to stop. I have since made a Facebook Page and am building a website currently based around myself and my brands. These videos are so well made, thank you!

Another way of reading books: - Learn speed reading. It speed ups not only reading but hearing too. - Get audiobook version. - Play at 2x speed. - Profit. Most books last about 8 - 9 hours in audiobook format, so half that is 4 - 5 hours, Divide that in 2 or 3 sessions in a day. Thats my formula for "reading" a book a day. Traditional speed reading can get you this results too, but my eyes get tired haha. You also practice concentration, because its so fast that if you are not concentrating you get nothing.

Hi I watched a few videos and would like to gently provide some feedback that I am hoping you find helpful. From my perspective, I am observing some abusive behavior disguised as or justified by the notion of "friends". Sheen, your demeanor is warm and accepting which relaxes Ali and thus naturally makes him vulnerable. He feels safe letting down any guard with you. Instead of appreciating this, welcoming it the opposite is happening too many times. Once is too much. Sheen you single Ali out, " guess whose shoes are not negative and tidy" in the air bnb. You are recording moments that potentially make him look unfavorable: showing him when he was asking about his body wash. There are numerous times when you choose to say something derogatory to him: hitting women, cold, does not listen.... This behavior in you truly must stop. If you decide not to recognize it and change it, it will continue in all relationships with men. It appears you stand for human rights. Women are human. Then that is touting the assumption that you are a compassionate, kind, woman. This abusive behavior towards Ali is then completely opposite to the core of your beliefs, right? One, leave Ali alone. Let him be the unique , driven, helpful, sincere, self that he is. He has helped you so much! Let yourself feel that appreciation and channel it into being much much much more understanding towards/with him, more compassionate. Practice on him ..develop your skill of kindness After learning true kindness within for you. Embrace your own uniqueness and the amazingly beautiful expressions of that. Be kind! I see Ali being so helpful to you: helping you with your channel(that is priceless!) Including you in his, being infinitely polite towards you when the topic of you two dating arises.providing you a safe place to live.. etc etc. In turn, you put him down, make him look bad, single him out, STOP. Have some respect for him and most of all yourself! We don't get ahead by putting people down. I hope you find this helpful and take it to heart. Oh about learning how to be kind to yourself, I can help you do that. Peace

so true about the manager - I think people underestimate how much time does people management require, esp. if you want to grow the team in the right way. Even two hours for the feedback may sometimes not be enough! :)

Yea, having a growth mindset is useful in a ton of ways. Because when you are progressing at something it's difficult to see the changes that have been made. But after a while at the thing, when you look back, it seems as if after all it really was worth it. This seems kinda specific but I would say it applies to a lot of things. Such as maybe someone trying to put on muscle or someone trying to get better grades or learning digital art, etc. I believe that I should improve at this because, I have a fixed mindset when it comes to a lot of things. Congratulations on 2 mil subs, btw!

Another tip is to embrace when you're starting out in a new skill is your first creation as version 1... That way obviously version 1 is a crap product but it's a start so as you improve and iterate it continues to version n(infinity)
