Both of you are authentic. Dawn often says, "you do you! None of Dawn's family invests in being athletes. You do. Dawn thrives in simplicity, you thrive in stocking up on bargains. You feed your family from a pantry filled with bargains, she feeds her family from a "just in time" method of storage. I enjoyed your comparison, and I enjoy both of you. We can learn from many different points of view and ways of being thrifty/simple.

"Don't buy stuff you can't afford." Best financial advice from my parents was a year or so after I'd moved out on my own. I went back to visit and I was talking about this cute piece of furniture "and it's $70 off!" But it was still, like, $150 or something. My mom said, "it may be a great deal but if you don't have the money, it's still too much." 20 years later, I still live by those words. And I didn't buy it.

I think your priorities lay in where your strengths are and in your case, you love the kitchen and saving money that way which I would be the same.... But in Dawn's case, I don't think they are foodies and I don't think she loves to cook so one spatula, one mixing spoon, etc equals enough.... I am a single senior and I have at least three spatulas and three large spoons because the kitchen is my laboratory! I have always loved it! Now give Dawn a paintbrush with some paint and she is in 7th heaven!

@@tishyj53 Dawn has helped me tremendously to become more minimalist and to go through things but I could never be a true minimalist I don't think. @@kathleengarness1660 in my case if I'm making two or three things and I have used up some spoons, it's easier to reach into my drawer to get another wooden spoon. I don't have to quit my prep work in order to wash a spoon that I've already used and they are very easy to wash once I am all done. I think it would be akin to only having three pair of underwear when I only do laundry once a week. I have a fair bit of coverage space so storing extra baking dishes or pots and pans doesn't bother me at all nor do I consider it inventory. However I am not stocking up on so much food as I used to because of Dawn!

For sure, after the 2020 lockdown and now all the craziness happening from Suez canal blockages to ransomware hackers, if you have a family, it seems wiser to have a minimum of two months of food/household supplies on hand at all times. I feel insecure if I don't have at least two weeks of food, preferably more. I work hard at not wasting anything, especially produce because it's so darn expensive.

I enjoy Dawn's channel but her brand of minimilism doesn't work for me. I like having a couple of sets of sheets for each bed, a stockpile of food, and lots of kitchen tools -- because I like to cook and spend a lot of time in my kitchen. And several coats, several pairs of boots, etc. etc.
@CarFreeKC
@CarFreeKC 3 жыл бұрын
I agree -- I have a lot of stuff in my kitchen but that's because I love cooking. I also never eat out so for ME, it's worth it to stock up on pantry staples and things I love to have around for quick sides or snacks. For my coats, I have had a few sitting in the closet but I occasionally run into a homeless person in my city without a coat and I like to run up to my apartment and grab a well loved but no longer needed pea coat to offer them in the cold. I don't keep a lot of shoes. I have a pair of Doc Martens, a pair of running shoes, and a pair of simple black loafers for professional work clothes that I haven't used in forever. I hate shoes. My feet are tiny and it's hard to find cute stuff in my size that isn't childish.

I think that there is no rule book for minimalism and dawn just shares what has worked for her. They are in a small house also which will affect how minimal a person takes things. I think a minimalist can absolutely have several coats and boots and spare sheets if they serve a purpose for your life and aren’t causing you mental fatigue.

Cynthia Myers, have you watched Ashlynn Eaton??? She is also a minimalist in this mega collaboration and she has videos specific to what you are mentioning. She and her husband love art and so they have way more art supplies than they need, and she loves plants so she has loads of them. She explains to us that being a minimalist does not mean you need to get rid of everything. If there is something you love you don’t have to be a minimalist in that part of you. I deff recommend watching her videos because she has a different view from other minimalist and helps many realize that minimalism looks different for everyone. She is who helped me see that.

Wow, 2 years ago I was killing it in the frugal department! But I definitely felt a little deprived, my home didn’t represent me style and personality wise, we rarely went to restaurants and found ways to do without. There comes a point where you can’t really live like that, we bought the FIRST piece of new furniture ever in our 12 years of marriage last year finally. We’ve spent money and time upgrading and remodeling and decorating our home, often times using free materials still. I don’t think I bought a scented candle in 6 years, lol. I feel like there is a season for everything.

Christine you didn’t fail the comparison. Just because you don’t do what she does doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. I’ve been watching your videos during the pandemic and I’ve got to say that I’m very impressed with you. You keep on bargain shopping and stocking up your pantry 🥫🥫. With a household full of people that’s the way it should be done. I have two grown children and I still stock up on groceries when I can. I learned that from my mom many years ago, she had five. Rock on Frugal mom.

What I find fascinating about this video is the similarities and the differences between you and Dawn. Both of you have your hearts in your families and homes, but in different ways. It is good to cut out what is not needed in your life, and also good to have the things you need and enjoy in your life. It is different for each of us. But we can work together to find ways to reduce the headaches of life so that we can enjoy the happy things...without having that nagging feeling that we should be cleaning out a closet somewhere! You and Dawn have similar goals...you are just getting there in different ways. Thanks for doing this side-by-side comparison for us!

I couldn't agree more! They are also at different stages of life. One still having young kids and one mostly teenagers. The one area that I didn't agree with Christine was having to buy new clothes for teens. I won't say that we never buy new clothes for my teens but we hit the thrift store first. My oldest went to prom this year and everything for the evening cost less than $75! This was dress, shoes, hair... everything. (Found the dress at Goodwill for $6 and then the alterations were another $35.)

NEVER feel bad for buying your children books. Kids who are readers are smarter, more balanced and quicker with their wits than those kids who aren't readers, and the benefits stay with them forever. Dawn's list is unrealistic and unattainable for those who are true to themselves and real. Seriously. She doesn't stock up on non-perishables that her family USES because having food in her cupboards is "too hard to manage and it gets wasted". It is non-perishable. It only gets wasted if you are buying things you won't use. Unrealistic for the majority of families who could actually use her tips.

I realised that it's the only thing that I enjoy spending money on and I'm generally very frugal in all other areas. I know that some people can be happy spending very little on food but for me it was a deal breaker. Love this! I use to live over 3 hours from the nearest Costco and 1/2 hour from Albertsons. I also worked. There was no time to not stock my shelves! And now that I live retired Idaho, just 2 miles from Costco and a mile from Fred Meyer, Walmart, and Albertsons I have gotten more creative with my cooking! Lockdown has reinforced that it was okay to have stocked shelves.

3:29 This really resonates with me and my experience watching you and Dawn. Dawn talks a lot about having a system in place for keeping inventory of everything that enters her house, so that’s #goals for me. But, my experience has been more like yours. Now that I can spend a little on decor, I have no idea what to do! 😄 So, I’ve found your relaxed style to decorating a bit more relatable, especially as you’ve updated your kids bedrooms by shopping your own house and pairing it with functional durable pieces.

I love both of you for who you are. We’re empty nesters and enjoying our semi retirement. I agree that the pandemic showed us all a lot. We downsized so I had to minimize so much stuff that was crammed into so many closets. That’s how I started watching Dawn. She calls herself minimal, but then I saw her big barn and she talks about her basement. I was like, wait a minute...
@keyisme1356
@keyisme1356 3 жыл бұрын
Totally. This! I realized that my stuff was actually equal to or less than what she owned, because her basement square footage "doesn't count" and her available shed storage "doesn't count" and Toms stuff "doesn't count" and the kids stuff "doesn't count"... I don't have a "minimal looking" home, but my family owns much less than dawn's family.... Most obviously, less square footage.

I've always been big into decorating for major holidays/seasons, and consequently have a TON of it. We moved/downsized from 2000sf 2-car garage house to 1400sf 1-car garage home end of Oct and I tried my best to pre-move purge, and managed to get rid of several totes/boxes of holiday stuff, but I still have too much. More purging will occur this fall/winter as well. When you move and have to pack/unpack/store a bunch of stuff you don't use on the regular it all suddenly seems pretty stoooopid. Ugh.

Seasonal decor, my Achilles heal in life. I have decor for every single holiday, the family really looks forward to it, but we need to work with what we have and use. During the pandemic as we were locked down where I am, I was not able to buy things I didn't need and it was 100% what I needed to break such a bad habit. I have made a long term goal to get these items organized and move some things out over the summer.

"In my defense" ... I'm dying! I love Dawn too! She helps me realize that I might not need that may of one thing BUT YOU help me stretch my Dolla! It's really funny ... I live in California and me and the kids are moving out of state ... not sure where but I told the kids the other day I will only move somewhere that has an H.E.B.! You are my spirit animal - I have an Aldi and the kids (ok they're 16 - 22) they all know .... RED STICKER check first, then shopping. My Happy Place is in the grocery store ... Love you to pieces - and you can't compare minimal to frugal
