Yes, that is Ian Fleming. The author of the James Bond novels. He was in British military intelligence during World War II. After the war it branched off into two divisions... one called MI5 and the other MI6. This story is about 40% accurate. And Ian Fleming based James Bond on three of the characters in this movie.

I rewatched U.N.C.L.E. over Christmas, along with this one for the first time. That scene with Alicia Vikander and Armie Hammer in the hotel room, as she dances around the room, just does it for me. Also, the boat chase scene with that beautiful Italian song playing, I find so mournful and really reaffirms what the characters are all about. (Armie Hammer has a podcast of course, and he's explained what he really said that people misinterpreted, and I genuinely feel for the guy).

My uncle was a army combat engineer in WW2 he was Jewish. He was part of liberating 2 different concentration camps. It’s fair to say. The Nazis guards and officers had a very bad day each time. Including the town people who claimed to have no idea what was happening. They had a rough few days digging graves and burying the thousands of dead bodies. The few who said no were shot Right away, my uncle even in his 80’s before he died said he regretted not killing more of them. I still have thier Nazi helmets, bayonets, hats. Ensignia, etc,

People in Hollywood said this bombed but it was given a very limited run in America only !!! In a handful of cinemas only , it's a British film about real British soldiers about the real man James bond copied by Ian Fleming directed by guy Ritchie and we in UK couldn't go to see it on big screen , no wonder it didn't make money almost as if Hollywood can't risk people showing the films we really want to see

It has re-affirmed my hatred of the modern studio system and general movie going audiences. When drek like the fiftieth Wolverine movie with Ryan (barf) Reynolds makes a billion dollars, and films like this go unnoticed, it makes me legitimately sad for what we have lost. Storytelling is so integral to the human experience, and by extension movies are a wonderful outlet for that. I don't consider most superhero movies storytelling in the Jungian sense.

@@nickmaclachlan5178 It was released in about 3,000 American theaters (about 3/4ths of all) and did not do well....but it was barely advertised. The reason they did not just "switch on" the engines of the ship is that in those days and even to day on some ships it takes hours to fire up the boilers and get the pressure up to to be able to move the ship. im not to hot on how long it would take i was British Army not Royal Navy.

While you have to love the film for displaying the British ability to understate things. Tthe one major fault is that in real life not a shot was fired in taking the ship. Also if you like this, you should check out Rogue Heros which is the real story behind the formation of the S.A.S. And yes we say Lieutenant, which is the correct way and not Leftenant which Americans changed to make it easier to spell.

Although the result of the mission was the same, with the three ships stolen, during the real mission, no shots were fired, and no one died, but that would have made a pretty boring movie. Later in the war Anders Lasen transferred from the Special Operations Executive to the granddaddy of all military special forces, the SAS or Special Air Service. He died in Italy about 10 days before Germany surrendered. He was shot while accepting the surrender d of a German bunker

People compared Guy Ritchie to Quentin Tarantino. Guy did, Lock Stock, Quentin did Reservoir Dogs. Guy did Snatch. Quentin did Pulp Fiction. Guy did this. Quentin did Inglorious Basterds. It's like they're mirroring each other in their own styles. I don't rate Kill Bill, or The Gentleman. Quentin then went westerns. Guy went Sherlock Holmes. Could there be more of an epitome of UK vs. USA.
