When I was a kid, they only knew about two animalistic responses to stress, fight or flight. Lately they've observed at least two more freeze and fawn. That's what pets are doing when you keep them as your own, they're fawning. They don't love you, they're afraid of you and responding with pleasing you hoping that you don't kill them.
