I've had a miracle, most likely plenty, I was a raging alcoholic, and started taking pills the last 6 years in my alcoholism, my organs started failing because of the mixture starting with my liver, I was on my death bed and they had my family call in a priest for my last rights it was the 24th of Dec. My family was praying the Rosary for me unceasingly, on December 25, I woke up fully healed and walk out of the hospital after tests and I fell off the wagon for a couple years, but now I'm 5 years sober, no pills. Thank God almighty for saving my life and the Blessed Mother Mary for her intercession

Sounds great, but there's no data presented in your story that is supporting your claim of divine intervention. The liver has an uncanny ability to repair itself.

@@michaelanderson4849@michaelanderson4849 Really? I'd be willing to bet that you know that the liver doesn't just heal itself in a matter of hours, without Divine intervention. It takes years along with diet and exercise. Op also said it was "organs", as in not just the liver. Either you believe or you don't. If you don't believe, why are you even bothering to post? Do you just like to troll or are you genuinely interested in learning more about miracles? What amount of "data" would it take for you to believe?

In 2014-2015, I had three simultaneous systemic cancers: two aggressive T-Cell Lymphomas (stage IV) and a marrow cancer called Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) - a precursor to Acute Myeloid Leukemia - at 23% of my marrow. As a "Hail, Mary" move, my research hematologist tried 3/4 of an experimental chemotherapy regimen. In only two infusions, both multi-relapsed lymphomas were gone and the MDS had been reduced to 2.6% of my marrow. My hematologist, an atheist, called that response "a miracle." I underwent a stem cell transplant and there has been no sign of all three cancers since 2017. I credit God's mercy via the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Anointing, as well as the physicians and pharmacists He created (Sirach 38). Saint Bernadette was instrumental in my conversion, and she is the patron of bodily illness.

I read Duffin's book. I think I bought it 15 years ago. I love how she characterized one of the 16th or 17th century popes as not a saint of the Catholic Church but of medicine. I think he was a patron of medical institutions and of rigorous science. It was his intervention that set stricter guidelines on assessing medical miracles. If I remember properly, I think it was called the Lambertini reform. She also finds it interesting how these canonizations provide insight into the state of medicine as it progresses over time. But also how later miracles become harder and harder to explain away. The church's canonization process really does the world a service by showing itself to be serious when attempting to discern whether something supernatural has occurred and using the failure of medical science to help determine this.

I’m honestly shocked when people dismiss miracles. I’ve heard Protestants say that demons will heal you if it causes you to join the apostate church. Which is insane and doesnt take into account the amount of holiness it brings to the people who were healed. Atheists tend to think its an elaborate hoax mixed with an ignorance of science. The worst part is so many people are so closed minded they wont even consider them truly miracles.

@@HAL9000-su1mz Amen! All you have to do is look at the history of them and their quiescence to things like contraception, abortion, sanctity of marriage, and irreverence in worship. If its not directly written in scripture they let it slide and even many times where it is in scripture, they just ignore the passages or reinterpret them. It really grinds my gears because if they truly believed in sola scriptura, we would be able to reason with them from the scriptures instead of debating their misinterpretations. Just ask a baptist if baptism now saves you or what Paul meant in romans 2 or what james said in his 2nd verse. I just hope some of them stop being so stubborn and consider catholic doctrine before dismissing it cause their pastor said to. The pastors rely on their congregations not doing any research, to pull this off, they simply overload their congregations with foreign ideas to them. If you grew up protestant, things like icon and marian veneration, prayers for the dead, the papacy, or the eucharist. It sounds overwhelming to them so they tend to just dismiss catholicism instead of doing the work to research. Its super easy to tell because protestants have their own lingo and it presents itself heavily when they discuss the catholic doctrines. You can totally tell if they learned everything they know about catholics from a protestant. That tells me they didnt do any critical thinking because they never listened to what the opposition says

God have mercy on US! Dogmatic religion by its very nature generates "protestants". Perhaps the good doctor's concern is that we're using these miracles as a strictly defined "means to an end" (in this case, confirming Saints). Once we do that, we're sorta putting these miracles on an altar so that it then becomes quasi sacrilegious to investigate them further. Perhaps we were given these miracles because God wanted us to discover the underlying natural principles that caused them so that they can cure more people than just those who pray to the Saints

Right. "Unbelief" isn't the absence of belief but faith in some other thing. James said, "Faith without works is dead", but I say unto you, "Works without faith are impossible." For example, if you don't believe that laying hands on the sick would do them any good, would you lay hands on the sick? Obviously not. "Works without faith are impossible", because such works simply would not be attempted. Such "unbelief" is actually "faith" in the power of your circumstance.

Part of the just-so stories are Marvel's superhero stories, where "gods" turn out to be aliens living on planets called Valhalla and with the right science we can build a spaceship and go there with a laser cannon strong enough to disrupt whatever stuff they use there. So the fallacy is not to think that there must be some kind of "natural" explanation, because the Atheist is willing to expand "nature" enormously, including Smjolnir and Pim particles. He could accept and will accept that one day we find a new fundamental particle which allows (when correctly applied) for water to turn into wine. What he cannot accept is that the explanation might not be understandable to him. That none of the categories, however far and wide he allows them to run, can capture the fullness of God.

As a convert to Catholicism, how can I use this as a case for the Catholic Church over Mere Christianity? Before my conversion I would have argued that these miracles ARE miracles but had nothing to do with a specific saint’s intercession, it just looked like it because of the recipient happening to ask for the saint’s intercession. Now, if I encountered this argument I would move the conversation into one about saintly intercession in general, but is there a good defense for this while still discussing miracles? Thank you!!

Well, yes. Lourdes: it's the place where the Blessed Virgin identified as "I am the Immaculate Conception". The dogma had just been promulgated a few years before by Pius IX. Catholicism is the only Faith to hold this dogma (to teach the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary). Anybody disagreeing with the Catholic Church is in heresy. Lourdes is a phenomenal huge miracle in itself. And Lourdes anoints Catholic doctrine and Catholic doctrine only. God knows what He is doing. We may contradict Him, because we are ignorant.

There is one sense in which miracles are unscientific - repeatability. Nothing can be said to be scientifically determined unless it can be demonstrated repeatedly. You mix *these* chemicals *this way* and *that* happens. You need to be able to do it again, and then you need to be able to describe the process to someone else and see if he can do it, and so on. Miracles are by definition unique events, and in the Christian understanding they depend entirely on the conscious will of a person who we can't really interrogate well and certainly can't control. God does what he wants. And that's where the miracle investigations depart from science. We need science to tell us that the doctor "mixed the chemicals" the right way, and to tell us what happens when everyone else does it, but as far as I know there can be no experiment to tell us that a miracle happened, only to cast doubt on other natural explanations. And that is ultimately unscientific. That doesn't mean it's wrong, it just means that the scientific method can't tell us everything.
@ingoditrust7784
@ingoditrust7784 20 күн бұрын
No, of course there is no scientific experiment to apply to any one miracle. On the other hand, nothing is really 100% certain either. When I take a certain drug I cannot expect a certain outcome "for sure". It's all a matter of reasonable deduction: if that drug does produce a certain outcome almost always, it's reasonable to deduct the outcome is related to taking that specific medication. And if a certain outcome cannot be explained, it's reasonable to admit an unknown cause. But that there is a specific cause, divine intervention, is a reasonable deduction, provided the outcome defies any possible explanation.
@ingoditrust7784
@ingoditrust7784 20 күн бұрын
Also, repeatability is verifiable: since every miracle is unique, there is your verifiable "method". And since only God decides whether a miracle shall take place or not, it can reasonably be accepted that miracles are 100% divine in origin.

Neither Jesus nor any of His apostles taught that the Lord's Supper was a miracle. That notion didn't occur until much later. Until then, Christians didn't need a "miracle" to take the Lord's Supper. To them, Jesus' words were enough for them. "This is my body" and "This is my blood". That's all the OG Christians needed. "Do this in memory of me", doesn't require a miracle. That should be a bumper sticker.
@Sicarius089
@Sicarius089 2 ай бұрын
@@GizmoFromPizmo yeah they didn't need a miracle because they believed it to be Christ's presence in the Eucharist, even Paul believed it because he states to receive Christ in an unworthy manner is to bring condemnation on oneself. Christ's own words in John 6 clearly indicate that he'd give himself just like how manna was given to the Israelites and we know this is how he meant as three times in the one sitting he illustrated how his flesh is good and his blood is the drink, and after the third time of Christ driving that message majority of his followers left him. Even here in Australia before Priests were widespread adoration of the eucharist is what kept the faith alive, so yes it is enough. As for "Do this in memory of me" is a call to reflect on Christ's sacrifice and that he has atoned for our sin, why wouldn't we want to recall the message of the gospel when receiving Christ or should we think about football?

@@Sicarius089 - I think we're in agreement. You don't need a miracle to take the Lord's Supper. This renders the clergy-class superfluous. Why do Catholic priests exist? To administer the sacraments, right? But what if the New Testament knew nothing about this super-holy class of men - where every baptized believer was on the same spiritual level? What if that reality was maintained? I'll tell you what would happen: There would be no Catholic Church. Catholicism exists to serve the clergy-class - not the laity. But, according to God's word, all baptized believers are priests of the most high God. If you have unleavened bread and a bottle of wine (or grape juice), you have enough to obey Christ's commandment to, "Do this in memory of me". Imagine what would happen if that concept caught on. What would become of the pomp and the circumstance? What would happen to all those clerics? They'd all have to get real jobs, wouldn't they... Catholicism isn't about the people - the laity. Catholicism is all about the clergy and without the clergy you have no Catholicism. Without the clergy, you could safely go back to that time when ordinary human beings indwelt by the Holy Spirit would baptize converts and administer the Lord's Supper. Imagine that.

"Miracle" in some sense is another word for "Wow!" So, really, it shouldn't be a "confirmation" of anything, as such (eg, there's no "Reductio ad Wowum" in the sciences). In the case of the Saints, we might tend to look at it like "I prayed to St Xyz, and this 'Wow!' happened, therefore this is a gift from him to us that all the more confirms his Sainthood". I would guess a complementary way to look at it is, the Wow! happens, and we *associate* it with St Xyz, and file it in his general "lore", which creates the "St Xyz of faith" (as opposed to the "St Xyz of history", or Xyz the man, himself), which is basically "our gift to him"

I've listened to more or less 80% of Dawkins Gods delusion audiobook and I have to admit that it's a dramatically bad book, which presents drastically weak arguments. Author there instead of focusing on the strongest arguments for Gods existence focuses on the weakest ones (btw the topic about the proofs for Gods non-existence make there only about 30% of the book, the rest is hysteric anti-religious jargon). Half of this book is dedicated to promote the theory of evolution, which doesn't oppose the idea of Gods existence in any measure. The young-earth creationists are presented in that book as they would constitute the majority of Christians, while they're only at least in my environment (I'm a catholic from Poland) maybe about 1-2%. Author constantly complains about the uselessness of theologians, while at the same time presenting his own ignorance in the topic of faith (he basically makes catholic monotheism with saints equal with greek paganism). Absolute majority of his arguments were already many times rebutted, although he presents extreme arrogance and ignores any further apology of the faith. If I would be atheist the Dawkins flagship book would be the last, which I would propose, if I would want to convince some Christian. Many other atheists create much better polemics against believe in God (for example Ales O'Connor).

One problem with "miracles violate the principles of science" is its presumption that the boundary of all we know - our collective scholarship, the sum potency of our instruments, the global body of scholarly knowledge - represents all there is to know and is not constantly expanding. That there is no darkness to penetrate. This human arrogance is the single greatest guarantor of the need for ongoing skepticism toward science's claims, e.g. that what we see is all there is to see. science is not designed to give a complete exhaustive account of the human experience. Dawkins might equally as myopically write "discoveries are a violation of the principles of science. " The principles of science are violated every time we discover sonething new i.e. every week. This attitude is highly problematic before leaving the domain of the sciences, only to compound its problems when transferring such human presumption to the reality of historical data, historical witnesses, corroborating witness statements by enemies of the church, etc. Dawkins' proposition is a dog's breakfast of presumption-founded problems and he should have known better, going on the basis of championing the cause of how we know what we know.

To be honest, proof for a clergy-class of Christian is a "Just So" story. The clergy-class of Christian cannot be backed up with apostolic authority (i.e. none of the apostles taught anything about a special super-Christian type person or office) but in order to get on with the religious game of empire religion, we need a specially designated clergical functionary, who performs the rituals of the religion. This type of person is unknown to the apostles. The need for a professional Christian class generated this special super-holy class of Christian. It's a Just-So story without an authoritative basis. Christianity can be done without the clergy but Catholicism cannot. Christianity is for people. Catholicism is for the clergy. Prove me wrong.

The power of faith was taught by Jesus. He said that if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed you shall say to this mountain, "Remove hence to yonder place", and it shall remove. Notice that He didn't say that God would move it but that the faith in your words would move it. It would obey YOU. If you need healing, speak to your ailment (like Jesus did). Command it to obey (like Jesus taught us). We're not trying to get God to do something, we're trying to exercise faith. Faith means "believing it". If you believe it, you can receive it (within reason). Look at the promises of Jesus: "If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask what ye will and it shall be done unto you" - John 15:7. Abiding in Jesus means staying in His word and not going beyond it.

@@ingoditrust7784 - I know you're just trolling me. You don't know me or my doctrine but you opened the door, so... Jesus said, "Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood ye have no life in you." (Jn. 6:53) Later, at that Passover supper, He took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat, this is my body". In the same manner after supper He took the cup and said, "This is the New Testament in my blood." If the King says that the unleavened bread is His body, what should be my response? Amen, right? If the King says that the wine is His blood, what should be my response? Amen, right? If the King says, "Do THIS (and not something else) in remembrance of me." Do I need a miracle worker to obey Him? No. No miracles required - just obedience. In fact, to require a miracle is to slip something in between God's commandment and my obedience. What is that called? Usurpation, right? You have usurped the King's authority to require something He never required. You don't know me at all. But thanks for the accusation. It has been turned into a "teachable moment". "And every tongue that shall rise up against thee in judgment, thou shalt condemn." This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Paul referred to something he called "lying wonders". 2 Thess. 2:9 - Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, It's not a miracle. It's not even a thing. It's a grift that the clergy uses to maintain power over the laity. If you just read the New Testament and all four accounts of the Lord's Supper do you see any requirement for a miracle to be done? No. But if I need employment then I'd better find an economic niche in this religion or I'll have to get a real job. Right? And when you look at all the sacraments, who is the key player in every one? The clergyman, right? The layman is almost incidental. The clergyman is who our attention is on. As I often say: Christianity is for people. Catholicism is for the clergy. Catholicism, through it's requirement for something the King Himself never required, is setting up an obstacle to simple obedience. Who said that I can't "Do this in memory of Jesus" unless I have a miracle worker? Nobody - except the Magical Magnesium. The religion of the New Testament is very different from Catholicism. Read it and see.

Christ Jesus truly said at His Last Supper, "Do this ALL of you in REMEMBRANCE of ME." (ref. Mark 14:22 / Luke 2:18-20 / 1 Corin. 11:23-25)... Logically speaking, it was just a METAPHOR or SYMBOLISM which means to "BELIEVE" and to have "FAITH" in HIM (Christ Jesus) through God's GRACE when Christ said, "Whoever EATS MY Flesh and DRINKS MY Blood has Eternal Life." (ref. John 6:54)... If that was a literal FLESH and literal BLOOD of Christ Jesus through the R.C.C. Doctrine of TRANSUBSTANTIATION, then, Christ Jesus himself had VIOLATED the Scripture, the Prohibition from Drinking Literal BLOOD of Animals and Humans including Eating Literal Human Flesh. (ref. Leviticus 17:13-15). Christ clearly said, "I did not come to abolish/destroy the LAW but to Fulfill." (ref. Matt. 5:17)... Will Christ teach that LITERALLY?... NOPE. Aside from that, if TRANSUBSTANTIATIONP is TRUE, why does during the R.C.C. Mass, the Priest/Bishop/Pope was the only one drinking from the Cup of Wine that was Miraculously turned into Literal Blood of Christ?... it should be for all the R.C.C. Congregation/Parishioners to drink from One Cup... Christ clearly said, "Drink from "MY CUP" (singular), logically from ONE CUP only... (ref. Matt.20:23)... Will the Miraculous Blood of Christ be contaminated by the SALIVAS of the Parishioners drinking from ONE CUP?... Obviously, God will not allow it to happen even to contaminate the CUP (Container/holder/vessel) that holds the Literal BLOOD of Christ Jesus if the Transubstantiation is TRUE... However, when the Pandemic arises, it proves, that TRANSUBSTANTIATION is not TRUE... Even if you ask just 100 priests to line up and drink from ONE CUP, the last half of the priests will voluntarily sure not drink from ONE CUP... Facts and Truth of the Matters, Biblically and Logically speaking Praise be to God in Christ Jesus... Amen...

Logically speaking, your position is not backed up by any writings of the ancient church and it is especially not backed up by the Bible itself

"Needless to say, we disagreed on everything" Finally, the priest asked me, "Do you believe in miracles"?. I sure do, I replied, so I placed a tiny tomato seed on the tip of my finger. I said to the priest, see this tiny tomato seed? I'm about to put it in the ground, and in Six months from now, this tiny seed will transform itself into a six-foot-tall tomato plant, and it will produce many tomatoes, and inside each tomato, hundreds of more seeds after its own kind. The priest replied. But that's nature! So I asked the Priest, isn't nature a miracle? The priest had no more words to say after that, and we never saw each other again...But I hope he got the message that life is full of Miracles.
