One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed is the ‘Miserere’ of Gregorio Allegri. It’s a setting of Psalm 50 composed during the reign of Pope Urban VIII, sung in alternation of Gregorian Chant and polyphony. It is one of the favorite pieces of Lenten music. On Ash Wednesday it was sung for the Latin Mass of by Belle Voci, directed by Paula DeWit.
