Congratulations on your new place! This room is going to look amazing. Your walls are just fine white. It’s a small room and going dark would really make things look much smaller. Maybe you could setup a more natural riverside edge kind of setup in the window with all the natural light I could see it being a super fun embracing the natural light and really focusing on some incredible and tall emersed plants with some big terrestrials behind that?

That shelf is your signature!!! It must be incorporated! Even if it’s in the closet for storage. I personally think two L shape cabinets on either side of the desk are would be great and your chair in the corner next to the door. And then def a column style tank between the doors!

Exiting news. Congratulations. Houseplants are a must to fill in the empty areas and maybe a nice natural wood observation bench .
@Twinkley19816 ай бұрын
My tip would be to map out your shelving tank ideas with tape first so you get an idea of space before setting it all up. Also with it being a small space you need to choose a good colour scheme as you don’t want the room to be dark because it will make it look and feel smaller than it is. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
@CK-solutions6 ай бұрын
I was going to suggest keeping the 3 funny shaped nooks (window bay, and the two side walls) white - and possibly the storage area. Then paint the rest in the darker colours - perhaps charcoal, which is very dark grey? I'd consider keeping the skirting boards all white too. What this does for a small room is exaggerate the nook space as being larger than it is - being lighter. Plus it breaks up the wall to ceiling 360 dark colours, which can make a room look too small (ie: like a dark closet).

I think a relatively high aquarium in the corner next to the door would be just right. A project that should be well planned because some of the plants should grow high. The animals would also be exciting, because in a tall aquarium the right fish should be used for each area (near the bottom, centre, upper third) so that there is life everywhere.

An idea that popped into my head for one of the walls that meets the angle…you could do a pond like tank. I’m thinking a 3 or 4 foot (whatever fits best) breeder layout tank and putting it either on the floor or on a short stand so that you could look mostly down on it. Could do rice fish or smaller fancy goldfish with emersed plants and maybe a small fountain feature.

Congratulations! Such a big fan of your work. Definitely agree with the desk being in front of the window, with a way of blocking the light out for filming. From experience of moving tanks and grow room around, I'd think about where power outlets are first (looks like you have a few) and how you would place the tanks once making adjustments there. After that, a little thing for the back room, adding in a magnetised plate or small cabinet on the wall or something in order to hold aquascaping tools and a small towel rail underneath could be a really nice to store things you would need regularly. I also completely agree that you should still have the large tank in your living space if you have room, I think it's nice to have something to look at in your relaxation space. Best of luck!

In the middel of the room can be a long cubbard or shelving system that is high so u can put 2 or 3 rows of aquariums. Cuz the one wall is low cuz of the roof It really makes more space for nanos

MJ, its great - I am big fan of Nano thanks and in my opinion they are way more difficult. You’re unique when it comes to this as most people are like you - we love the hobby but don’t have studios like other popular channels. I recommend you put normal beautiful tropical plants in the studio next to the thanks.

You can black out the windows or use heavy tinting if you still want to use the window space for an aquarium. Because I think it's the only space in the room (other than maybe the centre) for a larger aquarium. But if not that's fine. I mostly appreciate nano scapes anyway.
@JeffreyGVny6 ай бұрын
A bit late, but I’d not do anything too drastic with wall colors. Let the tanks sing against a neutral background! Perhaps an off-white, warm tone like Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist or La Paloma Gray as the darkest (google them). You only have that one window so that room is not very lit without artificial light, yes? The sloped part should remain white like ceiling. Desk at window is great. If you want color, some area rugs with color would be good to help absorb the sound and echo in there with all those hard surfaces. The sloped ceilings are a problem because either the tanks are moved away from the wall so you get the height you need for setup or they sit low to the floor. I guess as much against the flat walls is better. I do interior design, so that’s my initial thought. Sorry I didn’t chime in sooner!

@Arazand6 ай бұрын
Looks like it will be great! The little wall between the doors that space looks like it could be great for a cube tank that is viewed from 3 directions. If you want to continue with coral that space would be a great place to have it, contrasting with the greens of the other tanks in the other side of the room! Two things I would be looking at is floor weight limit (houses from 1950-70s tend to be a bit worse in my experience) and ventilation. When you heat all these tanks or the room the evaporation will need to be ventilated, thankfully our climate helps a lot as the warm air wants to go to the outside when its cold, so having a vent under the window or leaving the window a bit open will create a natural draft pulling the moisture of the evaporation out, but in the summer you may want to use a fan, you can get a "smart" one or a smart outlet and have it turn on when the temperature outside is warmer than inside (then you get the reverse happen and the air outside will try to get inside).

first congrats with the new house, but make sure the floor can handle all the weight, also suggest getting either window air vents and/or dehumidifier with all the open top nano tanks to prevent mold, check if the floor can handle water in case of spillage, either way looking forward to what you going to do with the room
@ruialbrecht18286 ай бұрын
this small room (os:not small at all) is much suitable to be a aquascaping room! did you buy your own house? anyway, in terms of tanks, the rimless tanks only is a good idea. I strongly suggest you bring your big shallow back, which is a perfect aspect ratio for plant tank and biotope tank. and you absolutely need to post the step-by-step process of setting up your studio. I hope I can have my own small studio one day. GOOD LUCK FOR YOU!

That's a really great space man! Congrats! Can't wait to see all the new scapes you are going to put in. I do have to say I'm sad to see the paludarium go. I get you might want to only have rimless tanks but it is such a beautiful setup. I actually talked to my wife about taking it off your hands but sadly she gave me a big fat NO... 😢 For the room itself I'd say find a color for the walls that will not reflect too much light. Maybe something like a matte green. Also I'm sure you already know this but make sure not to put any tank on a shelf that can't handle all that weight! That bitty shelf between the doors makes me very nervous.
@kuch1two96 ай бұрын
Congratulations MJ! 🎉 Hope you can keep the shelf in your new place even with just 1 or 2 tanks as a remembrance that it's where your channel almost started. Even if you just keep it as part of your new place and not in the new studio per se. Happy for you!
