Zorn was fantastic as a painter. He was able to make ivory look bluish in his painting when needed.

A técnica parece ser boa, mais vídeo acelerado infelizmente atrapalha😢 Seria bom fazer um outro com velocidade normal. Aí sim seria ótimo, obrigado!

Hello, this video is great, but what is the difference between this and the modern Zorn palette? As well, again, thank you so much for posting this. It’s amazing and a great resource.

I've been painting portraits for 40 years or more and I always spend far too long using my instinct to find all the values and hues. It is a long and complicated business. I am vowing right now to do the next portrait or two using this palette. But how can I find the blues I love in backgrounds and cool shadows? I might have to add a blue. Any advice?
@williamgraf25663 жыл бұрын
Hi Linda, Yes, you can add as many colors as you'd like. I add viridian green at times if the sitter has light skin, the viridian offsets the pink tones. Joshua Reynolds used viridian painting women & children with Alabaster skin!

You can add as many colors as you want. I would personally recommend an addition of Transparent red oxide and Prussian blue.

@@williamgraf2566 Or, you can use ivory black and white, which, when put against your warm flesh colors, will appear blue

The magic of the Zorn palette is that it retains color harmony. Of course a palette should have blue, but at that point you are on your own. Same thing with Cyan Maganta, and Yellow primary. It gives you lots more colors, but you are on your own as to how all those options work together. And the consensus in ateliers is that comes into it when you are a full time student, years down the road.

Why are the greys nessecary? To mute the colors?
@williamgraf53203 жыл бұрын
Yes, Zorn used black and white on his palette and mixed his grey value as he painted. This modification stems from the Frank Reilly Palette, where the values are broken down in value sequence using gray as in the Zorn palette video. It helps the beginner see the values of skin tones and massing them in without guessing.

OIl of Cloves?
@williamgraf25663 жыл бұрын
Yes, the oil of cloves helps keep the paint wet longer. When working on portraits you want to keep the painting workable to paint wet into wet!

@@williamgraf2566 I’ve been using walnut oil. Just never heard of oil of cloves for this. Interesting again. It is antibacterial too.

@@lindapowell2660 Painters that prefer to work wet into wet use clove oil when painting more so in the darker earth tones!

It's a palette for people who are learning values and not for trained artist. These videos are tutorial for my beginner painting students.
