Thanks so much for letting me know. Also for the advice to tie down the ruder. Now...your "90 ruder tiller" works even better. What a difference it made. So much more fun sailing...Learning so much...

Jon, all of the seating options that lift you center of gravity such as this quarterdeck and the All-In-One seat will make you feel slightly unstable in rough waters. You will be better off in the cockpit under those conditions.For me,that cut off is winds above 15mph or waves over 2.5 ft. I have'nt taken passengers out on the quarterdeck because I weigh 220 lbs and my wife or any of my kids will push the 350# limit. With the weights you mention, you shouldn't have problems, esp with daughter

Peter, I posted the instructions to build the quarterdeck on the adventureislanders web site last night in the forums under "The Garage- Custom Modifications" section (as well as the Hobie website)

Terrific. What a great idea !

One thing I neglected to mention in the video is that the 3 main horizontal 1.25in PVC pipes have a 1in PCV pipe inside to reinforce them. In addition, a galvanized steel pipe rests within the back lower horizontal pipe for extra stability.. This will prevent the quarterdeck from falling apart should a glue seam fail.

@Peter Ratz Yea I noticed the site was down. I haven't posted any extra information on the site yet. Once it's back up I'll try to post more info there. The Quarterdeck gives you a dry sail boat experience. whIle the the original cockpit is more of a go-cart on the water wet ride. It's great to be able. to change up between the two.

You won't feel like you need as much leverage on the main sheet if you take care to make sure that you do not have any twists in the line running from the clew (aft) of the sail back to your block. (I could see several twists in the rigging from that day's shots) I always run the lines through my fingers as I'm lifting the sheet to attach to the sail :)

@Peter Ratz It's for sun protection. I went a round with melanoma skin cancer years ago so I don't take chances anymore. Most of us who sail these offshore try to cover up as much as possible.

The modular quarterdeck is easier to get up and down from the cockpit than the All-In-One seat.
@gregrobinmatt12 жыл бұрын
Because the modular quarterdeck does not rest on the akas, the quarterdeck does not prevent you from pulling the amas in!

I noticed the trampoline extensions from the cross-piece to the bow. Did you make those or buy them? Further info welcome!

Emily be careful. The quarterdeck is great for giving you a dry ride and viability but in high winds your higher center of gravity can actually make capsizing more likely. in High winds you will want to sit in the cockpit, not the quarterdeck. All my instructions on making the quarterdeck are the stills that are at the end of the video.

have you tested this with two other people sitting next to you? and if so, what weight limit would you allow? I am 200lb, my wife about 145 and my daughter and 40lb. any thoughts? also, have you felt like sitting up high affected your balance in rough seas? did you try this without tramps as well or to much pressure on the bars?

What happens to the AI if you fall overboard?
@gregrobinmatt10 жыл бұрын
The boat can sail on without you! I have begun using a harness and tether myself to the boat when sailing offshore now- just to play it safe.

The trampoline extensions are called spray skirts and make for a drier ride. You can get them at www.kayakingbob.com. Sorry about the late reply.

I tried AdventureIslanders to get more info on how to build your quarterdeck, which I think is a great idea, but the site is temporally suspended ? By the way, I will receive my AI delivery in 3 weeks....Gold Papaya just like yours.

As cool as the AI's are, realistically you could buy decent used sailboat or cat for what hobie is charging.
