The thing with Cotton and Kahn can actually be explained historically. U.S. soldiers learned about the physical differences between different Asian ethnicities to avoid confusion between allies from enemies. There was a "blink and you'll miss it" throw back to Luanne fixing cars in the last season. It was the episode when Hank is trying to finish Cotton's death list and Bill and Dale fight over a beer can. At the start of the episode, Luanne is looking at Bill's broken car and tells him "I'd say give it to charity, but charity people have enough problems".

Cotton isn't just using visual cues to determine Kahns ethnicity. If you listen he is sniffing while looking him up and down. He makes Kahn as a Laotian by the smell of his hair product. Thats later confirmed in the "COP" episode where he smells Kahn when he and Mihn are going into the Hill residence and doing a weird reckneck roleplay thing. Laos is a very french influenced country and Kahns hair style (pompadour) and his pomade make him identifiable from other south asians.

Agreed. Bobby is a kid; he's malleable and influenceable. We see him swing to and fro between views constantly. He went full-on pro-cannibalism-woke or zealous-environmentalist before - all over some figure of authority influencing him and winning him over on some view. He even let a girl his age push him into activism once... despite clearly having zero actual investment in any of the causes. His consistency is in his interests and base demeanor - he's a low-to-mid-level couch potato who aspires to be a comedian and to make his father proud (goals which, sadly, are often in conflict with one-another). That part of his character, and his influenceability, are always present.

i was gonna say, it makes sense to me because hank isnt ""Funny"". cotton has a big ridiculous personality and to a kid who doesnt have a firm grasp on why its wrong his sexism can seem funny, like a silly cartoon trait. slapping people on the butt and telling your mum to do the cleaning herself is funny when youre not old enough to critically engage with the underlying attitudes at play, its why a lot of young boys these days have an interest in andrew tate. both of these people seem like goofy exaggerated caricatures. bobby has mimicked hank for humour before but hank is understated, responible, and serious, not someone that a kid that cares about making people laugh would want to emulate. cotton has a lot of traits that a young boy could find "cool" before they are old and experienced enough to recognise it for the Loser Shit it is, so it makes perfect sense tbh

From a meta perspective, it's interesting that Cotton's debut episode shows him much less hostility from Hank than later episodes would. Being 40 years old with the documentary's worth of traumatic flashbacks Hank has about Cotton, you'd think he'd be a lot more apprehensive, and in later Cotton episodes, he is. Cotton's bad influence over Bobby must've been the straw that broke the camel's back for Hank. He was around Cotton enough as a boy to instinctively know to not be like him, but Bobby, being a bit older and only around Cotton for family events, never saw Cotton's awfulness on full display the way Hank did.

Bobby gets a lot of love in the show by both his parents and his grandfather. I loved the line if it is a competition on who the better daddy is, you win, you made Bobby and all I made was you. But there are small things here and there that make it seem like Bobby is and will grow up to a horrible person. He does have a lot of guilt. But at the same time he is reinforced to be spoiled. Like when he burned the church down. Also every now and then he is shown to be very selfish like his grandfather. To the point he can be a bit crazy like him. It is my theory, thay Bobby will grow up to be someone that cheats or talks down to his wife. It was sad when Luane became nothing by trailer trash exactly like something she didn't want to be and said so. But the show was very realistic that way. I initially chalked up Luann's struggle with Beauty School to her being in the wrong profession because it's so obvious she should be a mechanic instead. a small side note, i dont think its necessarily about cotton being more of a "man" than hank, its that cottons behaviour and personality make for a stronger personality for him to imitate. if you observe bobby throughout the show he frequently makes up strong characters to embody for comedy or just for fun; the way he acted dressed up in a bathrobe in a hotel, how attached he was to his cane, and a million other things without the age and wisdom to recognise cottons behaviour as shitty, he can seem like just a cool and funny guy who gets what he wants through being confident, has all this cool stuff and stories, a strong distinct voice and mannerisms, etc as a kid your grampa taking you to a bar instead of school is awesome, even as an adult would recognise it as irresponsible. bobby doesnt see the sexism in "womens work" except as a funny phrase you can say to get out of doing chores. slapping people on the butt makes them get you that snack you wanted. you need age and experience and critical thinking provided by good role models to recognise these things as shitty instead of a funny superpower to get what you want

Cotton is by no means my favorite character, but one of my favorite episodes of the show is the episode where he helps Peggy walk again after the skydiving incident. 2 characters who blatantly hate each throughout the series both pushing to help the other. Not softening and coming around to start to like the other person, but there is complicated sense of respect and support. Cotton essentially bullying Peggy and pushing her past her breaking point when she’s feeling weak and pathetic in a way she hasn’t before, feeling helpless like she might not ever be able to stand/walk/feel independent like she used to. Cotton pushes her down and riles her up to remind her she can stand up for herself, kinda strengthened by her anger towards Cotton. She opts out of physical therapy and asks for Cotton’s help instead to regain her strength and mobility. In exchange Peggy helps Cotton secure a grave plot in a cemetery for veterans and war heroes. She learns a lot about him through doing this and comes to understand him to some level in a way she hadn’t before. She questions his stories and is skeptical, but she fights for his right to be laid to rest in the veterans cemetery because despite her feelings about him and what a dick he often is he risked his life fighting for their country, and came back half the man he was before and she believed he deserved to be remembered that way. At the end when Cotton gets his cemetery plot, they go to the location and the plot is on top of a hill. Peggy is still badly injured with extremely limited mobility, and she says she’ll just stay and look from afar because she doesn’t believe she can get to the hilltop. That’s when Cotton tells her his last bit of motivation, if she gets up that hill he will let her dance on his grave. Peggy throws herself out of her wheelchair and crawls, clawing her way up the hillside to the top, using every bit of her strength and at the top she looks exhausted, but shakily stands and Cotton takes her hands, she falls into his arms leaning on him as they silently dance together on his grave.

Medically speaking the thing that happened to cotton is technically possible and is somewhat done today. There is a style of leg amputation that can occur where the shin and knee are damaged but the foot is fine. What doctors would do is get rid of the broken areas and stitch your foot on what remains of your femur where it would then act as a knee. This intern eliminates the need for prosthetics with knee joints which is incredibly expensive and hard to make

I love your videos and opinions on King of the Hill. I do want to share a bit of mine with you about Bobby and his impressionableness. I've actually seen this happen in many children. When they see a loophole that allows them to move outside of their parents/guardians framework they will jump on it if it appeals to them. In Bobby's case, Cotton is his dad's dad and he sees his dad as being great. On top of this, his dad allows for things to occur while Cotton is around that he wouldn't allow normally. That and Hank has a limited means of forcing Cotton to change and doesn't outright rebuke him and his actions enough, let alone often in front of Bobby. So there's a lot of leeway there for Bobby to be open to Cotton and his methods. For example, Bobby doesn't harbor disrespect for women but respect for Cotton. When he mimics the butt slapping, he likely just sees it as something cool or natural. Bobby isn't always noticing how people respond negatively to Cotton and when he does there often isn't much of a negative consequence to it. Bobby as a child is missing a lot of subtext and life experience. He isn't dumb and he knows that Cotton isn't going to do and allow for all of the things that Hank and Peggy would, but he knows that he's allowed to act in certain ways around each person. As far as I can recall, the negative stuff that Bobby picks up has not been outright banned or spoken about. Hank and Peggy have never exhibited Cottons awful behavior and their norms are so far from it that no one would expect them to have to tell him. Bobby could probably guess that it's wrong in some way, but not completely why. The loophole and fascination would beat that out and allow him to act out.

I don't think its so much that Bobby is written inconsistently - I think Bobby is just consistently impressionable, whether from Cotton or John Redcorn or random clowns and dungeon masters. Bobby loves finding new versions of himself cause while he's mature for his age he is still very childlike

Even if he's already had his feet connected to his shins, couldn't Cotton have just gotten the feet amputated and gotten prosthetics anyway? I'm probably overthinking it but it just seems weird to me that someone in his position would never think of that.

That would've hurt as Hell
@tylertheguy3160 Жыл бұрын
@@MASTEROFEVIL I mean yeah but it would've been bearable if he got it professionally done, and I think having prosthetics would be infinitely better than having to hobble around like a penguin and being incredibly short.
@FrancisR420 Жыл бұрын
Maybe The medics were planning on him getting prosthetics but didn't follow through. Sometimes ankles are grafted as replacement knees and prosthetics are attached to the foot, maybe the medic was trying to save as much of his legs as possible and then the VA fell through when he got home.
@FrancisR420 Жыл бұрын
@@tylertheguy3160 Do you have a prosthetic how do you know how bearable one would be for a specific undefined injury? People who've had professional amputations have lifelong issues with prosthetics And this was 50 years ago post Vietnam, Vietnam vets are not known for their prompt comprehensive medical treatment,
@tylertheguy3160 Жыл бұрын
@@FrancisR420 1. Yes I know phantom pain is a thing. I would rather take that over hobbling around like a penguin. 2. Cotton was in World War 2, not Vietnam. And soldiers have been fitted with prosthetics as far back as the Civil War.

the feet reatachment is quite common and makes prostetics work a lot better you dont want a stump because theres no cartilage on the bottom and it makes using prostetics quite painful, theres an amputee girl on youtube who wxplains in more detail,

Luanne’s diagnosis on the car was completely wrong. The starter was turning meaning no issue with the starting system, especially the starter solenoid. In fact anytime any of the characters are talking about cars, they are all wrong except boomhower.

A procedure called a rotationplasty might have been an option for Cotton, although the surgery is usually performed on children who are still growing
@rollanddev Жыл бұрын
While invented in the 30s, it wasn't a very well known operation until the 1950s, making it unlikely the physician handling his case would have known about it (let alone how to perform it).

R2D is going crazy on all sorts of forms of media in this video. Also, he says some folks have a Cotton Hill in their family, and while I can think of a few behaviorally, I don't think that any of them killed fiddy men. Bro, how many friends name Fattie did Cotton have over this lifetime? I feel like his later usual posse has one that also gets replaced by another one. Also, I know it's probably done in a fashion to put him down and make him lesser-than, but I always like the way Cotton says "Mister KAHN." And I wonder when we're going to be getting past the episodes I've seen KZbin poops of.

*scribbles down the Medusa bit* I have someone like Peggy as a mom. Who sadly shares said name. So yeah.... That's why I can't stand Mrs. Hill getting away with her antics. My mom NEVER was able to get away with half the crap this woman did. Also... I see it as both offensive and impressive. You can have a keen eye for something so niche but use it in offensive reasons. Though I like to think that the brief moment of cotton and Hank having fun was foreshadowing of what's to come later on. Cotton has moments where he can be fun and empathic but it's burried under years of spite, bitterness, and selfish selfhated. I mean the guy offs himself as a powermove over Peggy! As for Dee? Well I think she probably was like that WELL before she met Cotton. That kinda thing take time not only to take root but also to crawl out of. So it's possible she had been in abusive relationships or had a broken home life like Hank did.

6:45 Um... there are procedures where if the shin needs to be amputated they do attach the one foot to the knee. They rotate the foot 80 degrees though so the Ankle bends in the same direction as the knee, then the prosthetic straps on the foot and thigh, giving the amputee a functioning kankle joint. So... if they put cotton's feet on backwards, he would actually be able to walk near normal with prosthetics.

there is a procedure where the shin and knee is removed and the ankle is put on backwards at the bottom of the thigh and acts as a knee for an artificial leg. It basically looks like your picture of cotton with one leg shorter except the foot is backwards. It's called rotationplasty

usually when people attach the foot to the knee, they flip the foot backwards so it can be used to articulate prosthetics

A friend and I have been going back and watching KotH episodes for about 3 weeks now (before Hardwick sadly passed) and one observation I picked up from this was how Hank weirdly idolized his father up until this point. Even in the flashbacks where Hank mentions how his father mocked him for hurting his leg as a kid, the way Hank spoke of Cotton didn't present the same sort of over glorification Hank showed off in this episode. If anything, that prior flashback made it clear that Hank was 100% aware to how much of an asshole his father was and while not outright hating him, he pointed out how CRAZY he could be and how outlandish so many of his actions were. So this episode just felt a little weird with how oddly blinded by 'adoration' Hank was over Cotton. Even the whole thing with how it come off like it's been years since they've communicated felt off but hey, early episodes. And as much of an asshole as he is, Cotton is one of my favorite characters in the show because of how incredibly outlandish he is. I was raised by a WW2 (grandfather) and while he was no where near as insane as Cotton, there's just something about how exaggerated Cotton is in his ways that just....works. He's not an insult to WW2 vets he's seriously just Cotton Hill and from the way things seem he was crazy even before he 'gots his shins blown off' before he killed FIDDY MEN. Also, I want to point out that as much as Cotton is an asshole, the fact that he actually KNOWS a lot more about certain things still makes me laugh. He knew Khan as Laotian which stuns Khan into silence while the guys throughout the series STILL continue to get Khan's nationality and culture mixed up with so many different East Asian cultures through the course of the series. He also didn't make a big deal over Gary being Jewish in the episode where Hank goes blind even though the whole introduction sets it up as him getting ready to go nuts but instead he greets him and doesn't even make a big deal of it. The whole episode and the Cotton's character coming off this episode was great. It shows us that while Hank is very traditional, he's not the same level of crazy that his father is and in most cases, Hank will come to accept and learn new things but the problem isn't so much of his stubbornness but like a lot of us, he doesn't take well to be OVERWHELMED and FORCED into new things without warning which leads to his very understandable pushbacks but it's so satisfying seeing Hank find his place in new things or in this case, stand up for his wife and later on, stand up for his mom whom Cotton put through hell. And as far as Didi goes....she is....ummm. How can I describe her? I don't feel sad for Didi because she gives off this weird air about her where she SEEMS ditzy as hell but then she says and makes these weird ass observations that make you wonder what the hell she's seeing beyond sight. She comes off as very chill and is herself just a harmless person. She means well and doesn't want to hurt anyone which is why even in her attempts to get angry or say something mean, it's still said with an air of calmness to it and yeah, two adults shouldn't be shamed in loving each other with an age gape but DUUUUUUUDE. It *IS* weird if your dad married your CLASSMATE and then later got her PREGNANT, making her your STEP-MOM and it's even WORSE when he keeps FLAUNTING it but that's another observation. Cotton was the one flaunting Didi in front of Hank and Peggy while if anything, Didi just wanted to have some sort of normal conversations (as normal as you get with her) with everyone but she's stuck inbetween the family drama that Cotton starts and makes her an accessory over. If anything, that's a part I can feel sad about her for; she just wants some normalcy and she could have had that with the Hills....if not for the weird situation that brings them together. It's why I hate how they sort of wrote her and GH out of the show after Cotton died. Even without Cotton around, she is still a Hill and I would have loved to see things like GH and Luanne's baby growing up together and Bobby sort of helping both in his own ways. Plus, I wish we had gotten more flashbacks of her and Hank together especially when it comes to the infamous pinching incident. I wonder where Hank got that habit from. XD

Dede has always unsettled me especially when I was a kid and I used to watch king of the hill all the time. The episode when gh is born and she’s suffering severe depression is so rough and I always felt like the narrative wants us to be annoyed at her for it
