That finale scene where Frankie narrates Howleen seeing the mirror... that stuff is worth some tears. "And maybe for the first time she liked who she was looking at." that was truly so beautiful, to see Howleen, how she looked before, just happy with Clawdeen, Clawd, Clawdia and Twyla.

I remember watching an upload of the movie on yt, And man- i'm glad I was alone in my room because that took me *_ATLEAST_* 10+ minutes to cry. "And maybe for the first time, she liked who she was looking at" hits so f*cking hard, i'm not black but i'm still a person of color and i've never got to feel like that, so even if she's a fictional character seeing someone who's a minority, *like me-* be so happy made me happy. I wanna like the person I see in the mirror but I don't because of negative stereotypes- and f*cking *_awful_* representation. Off the top of my head I can only think of Pocahontas, and she isn't even my tribe- it's seriously messed up what they did

I’m a young African American man with a cooler, hotter, more popular older brother. We went to the same middle school and high school, and I really felt Howleen. I always loved Clawdeen, because of her blackness and fashion. And then I was in high school and I stopped EVERYTHING to watch this movie. Howleen spoke to me. Between this film, and the scene with the hairbrush in Fright On (the black people know what I’m talking about), she is easily my favorite character. Also all the fashion in 13 Wishes SLAPS fight me if you want.

Regarding Monster High's casting, I agree it's unfair and rude for white voice actors to put on a "black-cent" (so to say). It's one thing if the casting was blind, if it's a foreign show, or if it's a situation where they had a very small budget. However, when a well-known voice actor pretends to be a stereotype, people of that race or ethnicity have a right to be offended. As you pointed out, this can be corrected by hiring more voice actors of color.

I watched 13 Wishes during my Monster High phase. I absolutely loved that show when I was young and liked it (though not as much) when I rewatched it. When I was in primary school, I was part of the popular clique and my younger sister had done insane things for the same praise and attention. Clawdeen helped me understand what I did wrong and Howleen explained why my sister did what she did. I love seeing Howleen get help for her issues, that she had friends that cared about her. After watching the show for the first time, I tried helping my sister like how I've seen Howleen's friends.

I love gen 1 of Monster High and this movie, but does it really count as a black girl story? The monsters aren't even considered human. A lot of characters in the Monster High universe don't even have a human-like skin tone. I'm not complaining about the movie. I'd just like to see an actual up beat black coming of age story instead of a supposedly black coated coming of age story
@SecretIdentityStudio
@SecretIdentityStudio Жыл бұрын
That may be true, but they are clear that, werewolves or not, the Wolf family is black. Especially in G1, where Clawdeen deals with hirsutism and constantly depilates, which (while it was criticized for being unfeminist, hence this character trait being removed from other versions of the character and the G2 version specifically being proudly hairy) explicitly establishes that that's her skin tone and eliminates the "well, maybe it's just their fur" argument, as opposed to more coded characters like Robecca.
@crazylizze98
@crazylizze98 Жыл бұрын
@@SecretIdentityStudio I'll be honest. I tried watching some content from g2 and it was disappointing. It wasn't bad. Just underwhelming. G3 for me is just "What are you doing", but I digress. I think a lot of black people especially kids would benefit from a good black coming of age story that doesn't depict the black characters as something other than human

Yes, and no. There are "white" werewolves, aka Romulus from the webseries who was Clawd's friend from another school who didn't approve of inter-species mixing, mainly Clawd and Draculaura's relationship. There were "white" werewolves with white and silver fur, while the "black" werwolves had brown and black fur. Although yes, they're not human and are covered with a certain fur color, it's heavily inferred to be a racial coding. However, they mainly lack fur on the face, and grow hair on the ears, arms, legs, head, etc, with the exception of Clawd and Romulus who have sideburns covering large portions of their face. So in a way it's up to you, but not really

Interesting video. The only reason why I watched it was because the fact that KZbin suggested it to me because of the fact I saw something similar to it evidently where their logarithm suggested it to me because of prior views. Ironically I'm thinking of buying a used copy of this film off of eBay just to watch it. I'm a 47 year old man, and needs to say this is not something that I'm normally into, but I've kind of got into it because I bought a few dolls for my mother, and kind of got into the lore just to kind of have an idea of what I'm looking at. Kind of like getting some idea of comic book or superhero storyline and getting an understanding of what the characters are like and how all the plays together. I never seen these dolls 10 15 years ago when I was going through chemo, but didn't know much about them. So it's kind of interesting to hear your take on the film because the fact that I'm curious about actually seeing when it's about Where I kind of disagree with you and I say this with respect, when it comes to voice acting, a person's race or authenticity really sometimes doesn't come through in The voice. Just hearing the voice alone doesn't make the character realistic. Maybe there's a certain attribute that they're looking for, and that voice that that person has plays the part, therefore that's the reason why they got the part, but just because someone looks a certain way, shouldn't be the reason why they get cast for the part. There was some controversy for example that in the live action Monster High film that draculaura was play by an Asian woman, and I do agree that doesn't make much sense to me. If you're going to be cast in a character that has a certain look or background in a live action film, the person who's playing the role should look and play the part. So that part I do agree. But when you are doing a radio program or a cartoon, looks don't matter. It's the performance and being able to sell the character that does. A great example of this and I don't know if you know this, but since you're probably around age group and probably remember it, look at Samurai Jack. He's Japanese right? Assuming that he's from ancient or feudal Japan, that is safe to assume correct? But guess what? Aku... Which is literally the Japanese word for evil.. was played by Maku. Probably best remembered and famous for his role as the wizard in the Conan movies, played Aku. Which I think is a wise choice not because he's Japanese descent, but he's got a very iconic voice. Comparable to Earl James Jones with Darth Vader. Just that voice that's very rememberable, and really drives the persona or character of the character in the film But guess what!? Samurai Jack was played by a black man. Do you know who Phil LaMarr is? He's probably most known for his roles on Mad TV back in the 90s and early 2000's, but he played the voice of Jack and a few other animated characters throughout the early 2000s. But if you're using the logic that a person of a certain ethnicity or physical appearance to play a character just because the fact that they are that nationality or ethnic group, for a cartoon voice, I can see it for a live action role, but not a voice acting role, should Phil have not had the job because he is black and not Japanese? So that part I don't agree with you on. You should be able to do the job because you do it well. Regardless of skin tone or whatever makes you different. It's how well you do the job. Again it was a live action thing, I agree with you on that. But if it's just a cartoon, The voice should not matter who it comes out of. It's how they portray the character and if the portrayal of that character comes off the right way. That's more important So I have to agree that sometimes I don't think voice acting and some of the clips I've seen of the cartoon, either the actual slide animation with the use or the CGI films did they relate a released, the accents and the acting I don't think are that great. One character that I always thought was cool (in concept) but kind of a disappointment and practice, was Invisi-Billy. The son, grandson, maybe great-grandson if you want to actually match up to the timeline of the actual HG Well's The invisible Man. If he's actually related to Griffin from The invisible Man. Always kind of felt that the boys in the story are kind of like background characters and really don't stand as much as they could, and if they did I think would make the story even better. I would have liked it if they took Invisi-Billy's character and personality and modeled him more after Skinner, the invisible Man from the League of extraordinary gentleman. The way that his bio is described reminds me of how Skinner was portrayed in the League of extraordinary gentlemen. And if they follow the pattern like that I think he would have been a cooler character. But that's me and my two cents worth from the peanut gallery. Cool video and keep it up!
