Truly Criminal

2 ай бұрын

Texas, 1993. A group of road workers were out working in the brutal summer heat. As they went about their jobs, one of them would make a gruesome discovery. It was a crime that would leave the most experienced officers in shock and they knew they were in a race against time. They would have to use all of their knowledge and skill to stop a ruthless killer, before they stuck again.

Why dont police take animal cruelty more seriously? Its always a huge red flag for future killers. If your kid is hurting animals, be very aware of what that means.

The f-d up families that produce most of the kids like this aren't the types that will care, unfortunately. This is why it's important for a country to invest in a well run Child Protection Agency that can screen for this. Sociopaths are born, but psychopaths are created.

The police didn't know about his killing activity until this crime was committed, so there isn't anything they could do about it, police can't just go from home to home randomly asking - oh do your children kill animals, I mean really, it doesn't make sense that you think that is a possibility, tragically it takes another crime to occur for them to discover someones criminal activity.

The only positive outcome was that Jason wasn’t allowed to wallow for decades on death row as so many killers do so now. Been abused and other certain personal things have happened to me. But not once did I ever think about harming another human being. That’s bull crap. For anyone who wants to blame the dad, consider this: the crimes took place in 1993. The dad might have assumed it was friends of his son picking him up (because "someone" was sitting at the backseat as well). While the 90s wasn't crime-free, kids still had more freedom to be out and about without the thought something *could* happen to them. This is hardly possible now unless you live in a safe area. And even then, there are risks. Saying "I would've done this and that" does not change the fact that this monster killed the two teenagers. I'm sure the father blamed himself enough.

@@fernfunk Yes. Violent crime has consistently gone down over the last several decades. People fearmonger as though today is more dangerous, when in reality the difference is that news spreads more now (so you hear about crimes when they happen, instead of them vanishing into local papers) and that people tend to get caught more often (so cases blow up, instead of going cold). This idea that it used to be safe, so people were fine to do XYZ and now it's dangerous so they can't is nonsense. It's exactly the reverse: it used to be dangerous but people didn't know. So they got killed. Now we know it's not safe, so it doesn't happen as much.

To those who are upset that the killer's background and upbringing is dissected and considered when investigating murders....if we didn't learn from these people, what contributes to these behavioral issues, we'll never have a chance of dealing with it as society. If it weren't for people interested in what makes killers tick, we wouldn't know that torturing and mutilating animals was a solid sign of escalation into murdering humans, we wouldn't know that being shitty to your kids might lead them down this path. Its also possible that saying things like "I had a terrible upbringing and I didn't murder anyone" isn't grasping the concepts. Its not for sympathy for the murderer, or a unfocusing on the victims, its vital information. Just calling someone evil and letting it be that is just contributing to the problem. At the very least, its not helpful to future victims of abuse and violence.

People with weaker intellects navigate the world with their feelings a lot more... those with the weakest intellects, spend near all the time in their feelings. Conversely the smartest people, seem to be stuck in that all the time. Think about it though, it's always folks who are a bit dim who really don't grasp why this is important, they can't get what function it serves beyond "making excuses," because they really just do not grasp the function it serves, beyond making excuses.

Well that's the rub, his family read his writings, reported him, even found a doctor and made him see the truth of things, diagnose him properly, and make the appropriate warnings, that'd he'd never be safe... and then he still got set free. Caught some time later with a scorecard listing the 100 animals he had tortured, killed, and mutilated, along with a cat he was in that process actively with... and he again gets minimal punishment, and turned loose again...

Kids are pretty sociopathic by nature, it takes a while to actually grow a fully human soul. Also kids are strangely socialized by going to school, it's such a strange environment in which you are stuck around the same people day in and day out for years, no matter what they do to you or how you feel about them. In the adult world, if someone like this was at your job, you'd be able to get them removed forever with just a word. Children are forced to learn to tolerate a lot of intolerable things

This is yet another example of the effects that abuse and neglect have on a growing brain. There is no easy answer here. It's sad all around. Jason had pent up anger due to the treatment he received from his mother. It's extremely unfortunate that he was not rescued and did not receive proper help for the trauma. Cristina and Brian suffered the consequences of that with their lives. What a horrific tragedy. I can only imagine how terrified they were. 💔

Absolute rubbish. My father was abused neglected and had a horrific upbringing and childhood much worse than Jasons yet grew up to be a good member of society even had respect and love for all animals. This guy was a pure psychopath and would have grown up chopping things up and murdering even if he was raised by the royal family. Do not try and justify or defend him just be thankful he's been erased.

Not to question your treatment of the case, because it was incredible as always, but is there any reason why you didn't give as much detail about Bryan's and Christina's backstory as you usually do for the victims? Is it just that there isnt much available? I find that to be one of the most admirable aspects of your coverage because, when it comes down to it, the victims deserve to be honoured as much as, if not more than, the criminals deserve to be maligned.
