What's horrible is that during this time, a bunch of the posts on the Facebook groups dedicated to finding the then missing Jill Meagher were from people declaring him, the husband, guilty and responsible for the disappearance. A bunch of wannabe detectives calling him a wife murderer and saying the way he behaved in his press conference showed guilt. Then, when the actual killer was caught and Tom was proven innocent, all of those people suddenly went quiet.

The St Kilda attacks were on sex workers. There was a lot of talk at the time about how if crimes against sex workers were treated more seriously Bayley wouldn’t have been out and about free to escalate to murder. Jill’s husband himself has said he doubts Bayley’s earlier sentence would have been so lenient if he’d targeted women society regards more valuable and sympathetic, like his wife.

People always complain about the US prison system, and granted, there are ways it needs to improve, but European and especially Commonwealth countries (UK, Canada, Australia) are the other extreme. They give these laughable slap on the wrist sentences even to habitual dangerous offenders.

I recall the Yorkshire Ripper case, and how the victims were basically shamed as prostitutes even when many of them were not such thing, just ordinary working class women walking home from their jobs etc, and how this attitude was a factor in how slow the Ripper was apprehended. The police got obsessed with what turned out to be a hoax letter (guy was prosecuted for it and imprisoned decades later) whining about hating prostitutes. It made SENSE to them, see. Like, it's 'normal' to hate prostitutes and if you hate them, OBVIOUSLY you will mutilate and kill them, even if you are the same guy who pays them for sex regularly. Except the men who kill them only kill them because they are WOMEN. They are simply the easiest targets as they will get into cars etc with strange men, and are less likely to be taken seriously as victims because of the stigma When you kill a 'beloved mother' (like prossies aren't mothers often) or whatever, they moved hell and earth to find the killer. Not, until very recently, did they do this for sex workers.

Are you familiar with the case? The St Kilda attacks he served 8 of an 11 year sentence for were on sex workers. A lot of people, including Jill’s husband, have said that if crimes against sex workers were treated more seriously he wouldn’t have been out and free to escalate to murder. But unfortunately society regards women like Jill as more valuable and deserving of protection. ☹️

The Australian justice system routinely baffles me and I've been an employee of the Department of Justice for years. I've sat in on parole hearings where a judge has said to the offender "you're a danger to society" but then proceeds to grant his release simply because "we don't have room to keep idiots like you locked up." Time and time again. I've said previously and I'll say it again - judges should be charged as accessories when the person they've released from prison commits another serious offence. Hold them accountable for the consequences of their decisions. You'd be shocked at how many dangerous sex offenders that I've witnessed being granted parole or an early release despite the judge acknowledging the risk to the public.

A guy the other day, that I met at a friend's funeral, later that day said to me that, as we all have a 'duty' to protect ourselves, the onus is on the victim.. He was specifically talking about rape. I ran away from him there and then, mainly because I felt in instant danger - it was only the two of left at the end of the afters of the funeral. The term 'duty' didn't make sense to me either. Its one of our most basic fundamental instincts to want to protect ourselves. I wish evolution and natural selection could somehow manage to find a way to rid humans of their evil and destructive qualities but it's a tall order..

It’s exhausting and terrifying as a woman. I battle regularly whether or not I am being over dramatic or it’s a legit fear I have when I walk my little dog at night, or to my car, when a man approaches me in public on my hikes, etc… When we met, my fiance admitted he never considered the impact predatory men have on our daily lives. He used to run miles every night through our old town, there's no way I would do that. Just walking our little dog at night so he can potty is questionable anymore. I've been a victim once, I refuse to be one again. No, I don't stop living, but, I really wish our living didn't consist of pepper spray, self defense knowledge & tricks, always being on guard and having to tell men to fu€k all the way off…regularly.

Self defense saved me after two men grabbed me in Las Vegas. I’m tiny, 5’4 and 110 soaking wet so I’m sure they thought it would be easy. This was 24 years ago, and I still shudder at the thought of what could have happened, what my husband would have gone through, not to mention my parents. It might be the most important knowledge a person can have. On a side note, I have 2 black belts, I guarantee they were sorry they tried me. That’s my gift to you girls, a can of whoop-ass. I hope it made them think twice before trying that again. They were never caught.

A couple of weeks ago I watched a vlog from a very attractive American girl who was visiting Sydney. In her video she was walking alone through a park late at night and she was commenting on how safe Sydney was. I posted a comment warning her that it was not safe to walk alone at night, especially in a dimly lit area like a park. When I scrolled down the comments I saw a lot of other Australians had posted warnings too. Melbourne is not riddled with crime but, as I cautioned her, it's better not to put yourself in a vulnerable position. Male or female, you never know what could happen, it only takes a group of guys who've been drinking, or someone who sees you as an easy mark and you'll be in trouble.

I’m from Sydney and the entire nation was affected by this. Especially after hearing about his priors and the piss poor justice system failing to protect Jill and many of his victims. This is a man that should never have been on the streets and she was collateral damage to a weak system allowing monsters like this to hunt, hurt and kill. Poor Tom, he had to deal with so much. I can only imagine the anguish, torture and pain he felt. Even today. This is one of those cases in Oz that sparked so much outrage and a cry for change. And after all that, the magistrate still gave him a sentence which included parole. Who gives a shit about the minimum sentence, the prospect of parole should not be on the table for this parasite at all! I'm a Melbourne girl and live a suburb away from where Jill lived and was taken from so this is a story that's close to my heart. I'd walked home alone along Sydney Rd after a night out many times but never again after this happened to Jill. The monster Adrian B was a member of the same gym in Coburg as me... it's so terrifying and shameful that our justice system allowed such a monster to exist freely amongst us. This is when I was also taught not to fight back, that it lowers my chance, and I need to scream 'fire' and run - if I can... which is insane that I had to even be coached on this. When a mother goes to tell the police her son can't be trusted... you listen. 'Cause mothers usually defend their children with everything they got. Also, really sad to live in a world where going home by yourself at night, in a 10 minute walk, is dangerous. As a woman, I feel that all the time. I never felt truly unsafe, but if I have to walk my dog alone at night I always try to be as quiet as possible (so as to not warn anyone of my whereabouts) and no headphones - 'cause then I can at least hear 'em coming. I am so grateful for Mike's amazing storytelling and the selection of stories he shares. I live on my own and I do have an amazing watchdog but I have been very careless of forgetting to lock doors leaving windows open and so on. Sadly my old boy has doggy dementia and knowing that he will not be alert to every unusual sound has scared the shite out of me. After subscribing to this channel I no longer forget to lock doors or leave windows open after Dark. I will also be adopting a new member to our family. The one thing about having a protection dog is no one can ever sneak up on you and that always allows at least some time to get to the phone. I read that people fear being attacked by a dog much more than being shot with a gun. I highly suggest that women living on their own if it all possible get themselves a dog. Large breeds like Labs do amazingly well in apartments as long as they are exercised. People assume they need a big house and a yard to have a big dog but this is no longer the case. Little dogs can also be a great source of protection is anything that barks is going to make someone think twice about entering. Also take your fur buddy with you wherever you go because this companion can and will save your life. Stay safe everyone and all you lovely ladies on your own take extra special care at all times.

I am Aussie and this story really impacted me when it occurred. I was 19, at university, going out to bars and clubs, walking home from the bus stop in the dark after work. I remember crying silent tears one day at work when they discussed the case on the radio. I felt such grief and anger - for Jill, her family, myself and the women in this country. My innocence was lost as I realised it could have been me, or one of my friends. It could be my daughter one day. It sparked an important conversation in Australia about violence against women and the country seemed to feel the grief and outrage collectively. It shouldn’t have happened to her, it shouldn’t happen to any women. We deserve to feel safe and the system fails us miserably time and time again. I often still think of Jill - when I hear a similar story, or when I’m walking alone at night. I hope the public doesn’t forget her. Thank you for sharing her story.

The system has failed us since the beginning of time and it's going to keep failing us no matter what we do. All over the world. Less in Australia (and the USA) if you can believe it. There's really nothing we can do about it but try to raise our sons with an emphasis on nonviolence. We throw the book at them in the USA when it comes to long ass prison sentences and harsh penalties (such as DEATH) and yet we have worse violence against women here than in Australia (at least I THINK we do). We see no results, except the largest prison population in the world. It's really nice to know they're suffering with their victims and their victim's families though...but we will never be able to walk alone in the dark without looking over our shoulder. We aren't ever rehabilitating a dude like this. He'll ALWAYS be a threat until he's taken out back and put down humanely. I walk home in the dark with my right hand in my pocket gripping a 9mm handgun with one in the chamber ready to go ASAP, because my life literally depends on it, and I STILL look over my shoulder. But I do walk a LOT easier. The way I imagine a man walks. But, I gave up long ago on any safety for women walking alone. I live in one of the most dangerous cities in the USA. And the world too, I guess. I should move, but I watch too much true crime and I know there is no place women are safe. I remember doing an assignment on this case back in high school and it impacted me so much. The parole board really screwed up and it’s so frustrating how avoidable this could have been. I can’t imagine how terrified Jill must have been in those final moments

I absolutely wept for Jill, her family and Tom. I’m about an hour drive away from where this happened. It was and still is unbelievable. I swear it is almost impossible to get jail time in Australia. Everyone was in shock when learning about what Jill’s killer had previously gotten away with. Also, in 2018 Eurydice Jane Dixon was found murdered at Princes Park in Melbourne. She was walking home from a bar when she was sexually assault and murdered. The guy handed himself into police after they released the CCTV footage of him. So eerily similar and it brought back so many memories of what happened to Jill. Great video man, I’m very glad this one was covered.

And then Eurydice's memorial was vandalised by a men's rights activist days after her rape and murder. He felt that her MURDER was making men look bad 🙄We have some terrifying people wandering around.

This was a massive case in Australia when it happened. The poor husband was, for a short time, the main focus of the investigation. He was cleared quickly though.

It's almost like a rule. Police don't respond quickly and don't fixate on an easy nonsensical suspect or they react quickly, show good face, and screw up major on the back end

I live in Brunswick and was living here at the time around the same age as Jill when it happened, working in bars on Sydney Rd, drinking at those same places and walking the same route home most nights of the week. It really effected the entire community. We were too scared to walk the short distance home after work and taxis were reluctant to pick us up for such a short trip. Absolutely tragic and infuriating that it could have been avoided had the justice system taken it more seriously at early stages of his offences. RIP Jill and I hope Tom is doing OK

I pray for Tom who decided to stay home and let her have a night out with her friends and then the friend who didn't insist more on the ride home. Life is madness and unfathomable sometimes. It's split second decisions that change entire outcomes. And nothing can ever be done to change it. It is what it is.

We (women) should be, but reality doesn't deal in wishes or desires. It's absolutely not a good idea for women to be out walking alone after dark.

The kind of situation Tom woke up to is one of my worst nightmares. I always have a creeping fear that I'm gonna wake up one morning and realize one of my family members isn't in the house when they should be and there's no trace of them, and they aren't answering the phone.

Being from South Australia this affected all of us! It was horrible for her, she suffered alot!
