The Monte Cristo sandwich is a unique and indulgent variation of the French croque-monsieur. It became popular in the United States around the 1950s and 1960s. The sandwich typically consists of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese between slices of bread that are then dipped in beaten egg and pan-fried or deep-fried until golden brown. Often, it is dusted with powdered sugar and served with a side of jam, usually raspberry, for dipping.
The origins of the Monte Cristo sandwich are a bit of a mystery, but it's believed to have evolved from the croque-monsieur, a grilled cheese and ham sandwich that originated in France around the early 20th century. "Monte Cristo" could be inspired by "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas, though the connection between the novel and the sandwich is speculative at best.
The sandwich gained widespread popularity when it appeared on menus in southern California theme parks and restaurants in the 1960s, making it a staple of American comfort food menus. It's known for its delightful contrast of savory and sweet flavours and rich and crunchy texture.

I use to work for a place that one of their best sellers was a monte cristo but they did the cooking quite a bit differently lol. Build the sandwich just like you did yours, but then they would spike the corners with skewers to hold it together and cut diagonally. Instead of the egg wash they would then chuck it into the beer batter they used for fish and chips and into the deep fryer it went. No melty cheese oozing out of the crispy fluffy batter so everything was held in. Less messy and incredibly delicious.

One of my all time favorite sandwiches! You can still get them in some restaurants here in the States. My favorite version came with a sweet/spicy Raspberry Jalapeño jam, which was perfect because the slight heat helps cut through the richness of the dish. That jam sent me down a rabbit hole of the fruity/spicy jam & jelly category which is worth exploring, imo.

Shame it was all a lie and we've been cursed with morbid obesity and a joyless, tasteless cuisine of guilt and misery. Folks, you are not eternal. Your ancestors ate like this and were happy. There's a trick I learned for any kind of fried cheese sandwich, and it's basically once you are about 3/4 done cooking, sprinkle a bit of grated cheese (not much, be sparse) on the outside so it crisps up and gives you that great flavour of the cheese that melts out of the side and "overcooks" and gets crunchy, but now you have that with every bite. The trick is not to put too much on though. just a sprinkle.

The first time I had a Monte Cristo was in 1968 in the restaurant that was next to the enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland. The restaurant was called the Tahitian Terrace and they had a wonderful menu that included the Monte Cristo. They had a fantastic stage show which included Tahitian dancers and beautiful women performing the hula dances of the islands. My little brother and I insisted that we return to that restaurant the next day on our family vacation to Disneyland where we memorize almost everything in sight and especially that amazing Tahitian Terrace Monte Cristo sandwich. In my earliest days of cooking under my mom's watchful eye I was able to perfect the Monte Cristo sandwich. Sadly the Tahitian Terrace is long gone and has been replaced by several different iterations of eateries over the years.

back in the early nineties, for reasons that aren't relevant, I was in San Jose area of California and at a restaurant i had breadcrumbed wedges of cheese with fries and it came with ramekin of raspberry jam. Similar cheese and jam vibe to the Monte Cristo. Since then I have often put a bit of jam in an otherwise plain cheese sandwich.

In 1970, I worked all through HS at W.T. Grants. I used the butter wheel & then grilled the top-split New England hot dog rolls on a panini grill like a grill cheese on both sides. Then put in the chili, then the roller-grilled hot dog, and then the mustard or ketchup, minced onions and pickle relish. Some wanted sauerkraut, too, or minced cabbage on top for the crunch. They were 40 cents, and 45 cents with chili. I sold 230 hot dogs in two hours, in my aqua dress uniform, lol! For 3 years! At Christmas, we would open the front doors of the store where our popcorn machines were. Everyone came in, and then came over to me for a chili dog and a coke. Inflation-beating eating! Pepperridge Farms still makes the New England hot dog rolls, but they are less shallow now.

One of my favorite sandwiches! I worked at a place in the late 80s that had a variation of this - two pieces of French toast, thin-sliced ham and turkey, Swiss cheese...one time I had to redo the Monte Cristo and took a bite (of the one I wrecked) before putting on the powdered sugar, and didn't dip it in the raspberry compote. WOW I liked it, and ever since I've eaten them plain without the sugar or compote.

@williammills9852 I'm telling you, once you try the others it will be hard to choose. The cuban sandwich goes well on with the ham meat, pernil and swiss cheese added to that pairs with pickles. It's unbelievable. It's best to get them in Florida the nyc prices on that skyrocket. It's easy to make too. You gotta press them similar to this video but through the process. I would recommend a basic sandwich presser to use it with a pan.

Hi Rik near me they do a gut buster, which consists of 3 pieces of bread one being fried bread. Then you have bacon, sausage, fried egg and beans and tomatoes, and its absolutely delicious. I tried making it at home, but always ended up with the bread on the top and bottom becoming soggy, before you had chance to pick it up. I'm sure it's to do with, how you actually layer it, but the frayed bread is always in the middle. If you fancy having a go, it would be much appreciated, and you'll love it.
