In the atmosphere yeah light has a lot to bounce off of. I've seen a night launch and it is just a ball of light lifting up into the sky. But once the atmosphere thins reaching space, a lot less light than you'd think, I reckon! It's very directional. I don't know much about rocket exhaust lighting up the rocket itself, but I don't think it would be all that noticeable in space.
